Title: HOW RELIABLE ARE ED 30 ENGINES

As above how reliable are the engines,cheers steve.

In what way?

- Mileage
- Power output etc

...

Sure there are a few guys hitting over the 100k mark now and seem to be running problem free. As long as you look after it and keep it maintained I dont see it kicking the bucket too soon.

On the tuning side there are guys running 330+ with a few bolt on mods (HPFP, Exhaust, Induction kit, Revo S2+). But Id rather concentrate on the handling and getting the power down. Lots of things can help with that. Engine mounts, coilovers, WALK, Diff...its slippery as they say.

If your wanting to go BT (400/500hp) then Jonnyc is the man to talk to, but you best have deep pockets.

Fast and cheap ain't reliable, cheap and reliable ain't fast and reliable and fast ain't cheap :happy2:

Look after the car with regular services and more often services if you go for modifications for extra power. Make the right upgrades to cover the known weak links (eg uprated clutch for the manual and upgraded brakes for ANY extra power!!). Do these and you shouldn't have issues.

Most importantly - don't ignore the little niggles as they may prove costly at a later date - some on here have found that out already. :smiley:

In my experience all the VAG turbo engines (petrol anyway, my A3 TDI engine was gash!) are very reliable apart from coil packs which have been a problem since they were first used on the 1.8T. That said, it's a small problem and simple to fix.

Having said that, there's the dv issue on the early GTI engines (don't think the ED30 had this problem though) but that was fixed by VW on later years.

Overall I haven't heard of anyone having major problems with any VAG 2.0 Turbo engine yet... which suggests the engine is a good one  :happy2:

I had to have a new engine after 4000 miles but that was down to a factory defect with a very fine crack in the block. Apparently it happens. But like Garth has said the DV was the main fault on early GTI's and they are relatively cheap for the revised version or Forge do one for around £100...only really need when going S2+ on the KO4.

Yep, although Forge do seem to give away the service kit for free... they did for me anyway  :happy2:
I would still go OEM over aftermarket on this one. The OEM dv is more than up to the job, which was not the case on the old 1.8T engines
