Nice one Gaz
Can I borrow the first one?
-
of course :happy2:
-
Cracking pics :happy2: What an awesome site they all make in one hanger. :notworthy: :notworthy:
-
they do look awesome all together, I'm actually working in that hangar at the minute, my desk is just to the right of the 3rd Vulcans's nose, not much has changed, no Vulcans though
-
And a couple of Nimrods at the back for good measure...
Are they the ones that worked??
-
On the first one feedback suggests it's a photo of Woodford when the Vulcans were in for tanker conversion, circa Falklands conflict 1982.

....An anorak with Vulcanitis . No, I admire your enthusiasm and dedication :happy2: :notworthy:
They really do have very powerful presence - Very alive and not just machines. Great pic, gaz :happy2:

Not me but one of the other members on www.vulcantothesky.org. :ashamed:
I have stuck the other one up to see what comments come back for that.
Cheers Gaz :happy2:

On the second pic I beleive that is Vulcan B1 XA889 (zoomed in), delivered to the RAF in 1955....was this the first vulcan airframe to be delivered?
-
It was the first full production Airframe with the updated wing design giving it better handling but i beileve it was then used to to develop engines. The first one delivered to the RAF was XA897

Sometimes if you scratch the surface you can get too much, but not in this case. After I posted this on Vulcan to the Sky forum I had several replies but none quite so comprehensive as this one.
So this is the image they posted.

Along with this:-
"Three Avro Vulcan B2s, XH561, XJ825 and XM571 being converted to K2 [originally designated B2(K)] single-point tanker standard at Woodford in 1982. 561 was the first of six aircraft to be converted to the new standard. Before conversion, 561 had been operated by No 50 Squadron at RAF Waddington though the badge of its previous squadron, No 35, can be made out on the fin. 561 was flown to Woodford in May 1982. 825 had been operated by No 27 Squadron in the MRR role until April 1981 and was then used as a B2 (TFR restored) firstly by No 35 Squadron at Scampton (till March 1982) and then by 101 Squadron at Waddington. In May 1982 it was flown to Woodford for conversion. 571 had previously been flown by No 101 and it too departed for Woodford in May 1982. Six Vulcans were hurredly converted to K2s in 1982 to replace Victor K2 tankers that were deployed for the Falkland's conflict. The two Nimrods at the rear of the assembly hall are MR2s XV252 and XV257, possibly being fitted with in-flight refuelling probes, again for the Falkland's. Has the probe from 571 been robbed for a Nimrod or is it simply being refurbished?

Some good pics of the Gloster Javelin on that first Vid, theres a cracking story in the biography of the Gloster Official Photographer who used to back seat in all the test aircraft, he tells the story about the senior test piot at Gloster at the time who had a bit of a ravaging at the hands of the press in London.....anyway the media feud continues until somebody at the daily express doubts the Javelins ability to go supersonic.....said test pilot straps the jet on and goes and "dumps" a rather savage double sonic boom on fleet street in the middle of a busy thursday and legend has it the only window that broke was the one whos office it was that had been giving the Javelin a hard time!
Priceless!
heard a couple of stories of Vulcans doing very low "passes" over russian "trawlers" that had a few too many antennas and never seemed to have the nets out - apparently there were a few windows shattered on board......RAF never received any complaints......wonder why...
Ahhhhhh Aviation in the 50's, ATC can literally know which buttons I have pressed from radar downlinks nowadays - very depressing
-
My understanding of the Vulcan roll in the 2nd one was that the plane had only been finished days before.
Unfortunately they don't do it nowadays, but maybe it could be a final swansong when they retire XH558.
