Title: Passer R36 - how rare?
Post by: Mako V12V on September 21, 2010, 09:14:36 pm
Just remembered. Bank holiday Monday just gone, I was in Lytham and saw a blue (same as Golf R32) Passat R36 parked on the front. Think I've only ever seen one of these before. So how rare are they; how many where built in the uk?

Ive driven one. Hard all round Wales' finest roads.

They're fecking hilarious, really don't feel their size, the underpinnings are that of a Golf R/S3 and that lump is woefully underrated. At International I did a 5.09 0-60 and 13.8 1/4 mile in one with a boot full of crap, the aircon on (cos it was hot) whilst listening to the best of the Police.... not bad for a 1700kg beast.

There has been a few down at VW Leeds so someone must have them? They are a nice alternative if you just cannot get them extra pennies for the RS4.

i saw one at the ring which was being used as the safety car, then they replaced it with the vRS estate, other than that ive never seen one

do they have a different engine to the R32 and is the haldex the same system?

R36 has a different engine, 3.6L 300 bhp. Not sure about the haldex system though.   :happy2:

Engine is completely different to the R32 lump and is also FSI, there's people getting easy 340s out of them in Germany They're obviously quite de-tuned but the potential is there, the manifolds for example are a thing of beauty and not what you'd expect on a rep lump.

Haldex is the Gen4 'aggressive' version off the Golf R.

What are they having to do to get the 340 though? As i would imagine getting an extra 40bhp out of it is not just as easy as a bit of code.

Depends how the OE mapping is pegged back. They're only 276 in the Q7.

If they're restricted at 300 but it'll make say 320, it isn't too far a jump to 340 - all part of the VAG pecking order no doubt, what's an S4 as standard??

The S4 is 333 but is a supercharged 3.0TFSi V6 not a 3.6. The same engine in the A6 Lemans etc

The R36 engine is also in the Skoda Superb but only puts out 260 in that. So they are obviously detuning it. I just thought that the R36 engine was the Max VW did and everything else gets a slightly less power version. As you say pecking order
