Looking for some info on these as the solid grills around the fogs look mince  And If I'm planing on goin bigger brakes thought they'd help with the cooling! Can these be bought from the dealer and if so what price?
And info would be appreciated :happy2:

....
They wont help much with brake cooling unless you add ducts from them right through the wheel arches.
There is a certain amount of air circulation from the 'open grills' but the driver's side is mostly blocked off behind.
Someone on this forum has ducted it all properly and hopefully will post here.
Open fog grills are easily available from Fischer in Germany and not at all expensive - £30-ish?

You can get them here:

Cheaper to get them from your local dealer but don't tell TT! :chicken:
iirc, someone posted the part numbers on the golfgti forum a while back
-
Thanks for the info guys :happy2:
I wondered if vw did them!

i didnt know VW did them either

I've got a pair of them sitting in the garage........ been waiting to get around to fitting them for a year or so now. Should get on with it, I know. :ashamed:

I'd go for these at the same time as uprated brakes. Then I could duct the brakes.
-
....
Or you could neatly cut a round hole in each stock (closed) grill - Might look very cool.
Most of the VW Cup race cars use the foglight aperture to run ducts from.
You'll probably need some kind of mesh/screen to stop leaves etc getting into the ducts.

Can get them from here: http://www.vwspeed.co.uk/volkswagen/vw-parts/Mk5_Golf_GT_GTI_Cooling_Grilles-2295-234.html
Delivered mine the next day!
But I hear that they are slightly cheaper from a dealer.
-
Robin... there appears to be some 'ducting' behind yours in the picture taken (presumably) when you were fitting your DLRs, but this doesn't look as if it comes with either of the versions of the open grilles to which links have been given. Do I have to obtain this separately? I like the idea of the open grilles but worry about the untidy mess that would appear behind them if they're just large holes?!
Thanks,
Shaun
-
The ones from vwspeed look like they don't come with the rear inserts!
The ones from fischermotor sport come with inserts; on the driver side it completely blocks the rear of the grill and on the passenger side you get a duct like insert that directs air to to behind the grill.
-
^^^^
Shaun - It's as bacillus says.
I didn't know until now that anyone supplied them without the rear 'inserts'!
Having seen Neil's at Santa Pod, I'm thinking of changing mine to carbonfibre ones
-
Thanks, bacillus... anyone know if the ones from the dealers come with these (I'm dubious as they're apparently cheaper!)?
-
Mine came with things that attach to the rear of the grille that effectively block them off from behind.....

open fog light grills :rolleye: dont tell TT :signLOL: but i had these on my golf and soon after putting these on the car it started getting clutch slip , i never thought about it but after looking at them its the duct on one side that flows the air to the gearbox to keep the dsg cars from burning up in hot places, so infact what it is doing is flowing cold air to the gearbox ie the clutch on manual cars and not allowing it to get hot and clamp to the flywheel so causing the slip. I changed them back to normal ones and it stopped slipping :ashamed: for about 3 weeks but started again a couple of weeks ago and did it bad today in 5th and 6th
its a thought and it did stop after i changed them back
-
^^ That is very interesting.........!!! :surprised:
-
So by the sounds of the issue with clutch slip am I worth keeping the standard closed grills then?!

....So you're saying that open fog grills can be the cause of clutch slip on a manual?
Am I right in understanding that you got clutch slip today while with open grills?
There are also 2 vents under the car in the gearbox area.
The open fog grill has yet to cause clutch slip on my DSG.

You are not running enough power or torque to even worry about slipping clutch as you are well below what they can take. It's just a thought and I could be wrong but it was a little strange and I will ask mark at vw racing what he thinks when they pull my clutch out
-
The ones from VWSpeed do come with the ducting channels on the back, but they're easily removed by just unpicking the tabs.
I intend to adapt these channels with fibreglass to run pipework to the brakes. I'll take a snap of them in a bit as they're off the car at the mo.
-
I will be using it as a cold air feed for my cai when I get one on
-
^ Yeah, Jonny's got his ducted to his intake - seems like a nice, easy route up too.

It seems to me that every recent topic is a cause for clutch slipping, from low windscreen wash to now open fog grilles!
All seems a bit daft to me! Either learn how to drive the car without slipping the clutch or sell it and buy a dsg

I think your right to a certain extent, a few people on here are a bit nervous about getting this problem, and this causes people to look hard for a explanation. But it is a expensive fix, so its a little harsh James to tell people to learn to drive when know one really knows the reasons as to why, as of yet. :chicken:
-
No being funny james but running around 340lbft of torque through a clutch that is designed to cope with 230lbft is asking a little too much, no matter how the car is driven. Unless you drive the car at 5k+rpm all the time the clutch will go sooner or later.
Me and matt will be going for the vwr/sachs clutch kit to cope with the torque :happy2:
-
like both Luca and TC have said we are a forum and we are trying to let people know what could be a problem with the cars running bigger bhp over stock and we are finding out the bad bits that cant cope with the torque and you dont buy a gti to drive it like a fairy :driver: its a drivers car for people that want to drive and play with the car if they want :happy2:
-
I apologize for my harsh words, come down with flu and put me in a narky mood.
Anyhow you have answered your clutch slip issues Luca, too much torque and power running through a stock clutch which can't cope over time, it is effectively reducing the life span of the clutch when you remap
So the problem is the remap, not fog grilles etc, unless you wish to upgrade your clutch to one which can cope with a remap
-
what i was saying was just what my car did after i fitted these and what i thought was strange when i took them off so just an idea that may have nothing to do with it what so ever but just an idea :happy2:
-
After cracking a new set of Brembo discs on a track day (my own fault :rolleye:) I had a go at venting them through the fog grilles, had to move the horn and use SHV2-63 Forge ducting, its a tight squeeze especially with a Forge Twintercooler fitted and you need to cut a hole in the inner wheel arch but it seems to work ok.
I saw the carbon fog grilles at the TT Shop and have installed a cone behind the slot vent to channel the air through the ducting.

Thanks for posting that info, Neil :happy2:
Some GTI's (mine for example) already have a rectangular opening in the front of the wheel arch - 06-Build / 05-plate / AXX-series.
Having seen your OSIR's in the flesh at The Pod, I really like them and my Hella LED DRL's (fog replacements) are just a wee bit tight around the stock honeycombe panels. So, next time you remove them could you possibly PM me an accurate millimetre diameter across the 'fog' aperture at the rear, please?

I've picked up a couple of these that I'd adapting into the ducts, then I'll run flexi pipework to the archliners pointing at the brakes. Much like NeilM (I think?) has done.

Guys, I'm trying to get hold of some open mouth grills for my GTi.
They are a faintly ridiculous £104 from Awesome, and VW have quoted me £58.
Any ideas where I can get them cheaper?
Help me out please!!

Found these on ebay. I know they're not OEM but for the money they look worth a punt.
