Title: Danza's French clutter - 50 miles and counting...
Post by: tony_danza on September 27, 2010, 05:20:21 pm
Got it - 2 hours and 50 miles old now, and have thrashed the tits off it down the back lanes.

T'is fun!

Looking forward to a review in the not so distant future. Must say that, having done the maths this kind of thing for some track fun is tempting

I've got until the 8th to run it in, then it's doing Snetterton whether it likes it or not! Oulton 30th Oct, Donnington 28th Nov.... you get the jist  :P

It's epic fun, as mad as a pensioner's terrier and I've not dared push it even half way towards what its capable of yet.

Andy - pads, fluid and a tweak of the geo. Needs nothing else at all.

The Golf has given it a filthy look and sulked off to the end of the drive  :signLOL:

:signLOL: That's jealousy for ya Mike.. The Clio will be giving the Golf a big  :booty: now that it's got your attention. They are meant to be a complete hoot these things, so not suprised you're happy with it.
I remember when I had my LCR and it was in at the bodyshop for a few weeks due to some tit pulling out in front of me. While it was being repaired I managed to blag a 182 as a courtesy car. When this thing turned up, to say it was dog eared is an understatement...
It had a headlight washer missing.
Wheels that looked like they had tried to take a 4' wide car throw a 3'11" gap.
Interior that would make the inside of a dogs kennel look mint.
The engine sounded like it was ready to chuck a rod at anything over 4k and it didn't have the Cup pack either.
But and it was a big BUT, what an absolute hoot this thing was. Everytime it got to a corner it was like a dog waiting to go for a walk, it just lapped them up.
I've just bought a new house and it has a mahoooosive gargage and i've promised myself a track toy within the next 2 years and i'm definately tempted by a 172 Cup and go to town on it. Cheap as chips and a laugh a min..  :happy2:

It's light, not so much in terms of mass, but absolutely in driving characteristics. It changes direction like a housefly, always composed and flat, wanting to be played with, egging you on.

It doesn't go in a straight line like the Golf, but it isn't far behind.. it doesn't stop like the Alcons either, but it'll soon be most of the way there. Show it a corner though and no matter what I'd have done to the Golf, the Clio would laugh at it.

There's a reason everyone in the press loves them.

It's not even poverty inside, looks and feels nice, the Recaros are amazing and a cheap option and I've got everything I need, Bluetooth, cruise, electric stuff, climate.

Monitor is a good toy too, has 6 modes:

Lap times. Current, best and last 3
4 way G-meter
0-60 & 1/4 mile
Power/torque/throttle % in real time
Brake G/power/oil temp
Optimal gear

I'm yet to fault it for the money  :happy2:

First question I asked before I bought it, Mat. But got it backed up by Renault just in case...

I can do what I want with it, so long as it is insured fully comp on track, which it is.

Good eh!

Their whole marketing for the RenaultSport brand is based around the track, they even run their own track days. (http://www.renaultsport.co.uk/roadcars/trackdays/Default.aspx) It's a completely different ethos to say VW, more like what you'd find at Lotus.

I love these, went to the Renault thingy at Silverstone and there was a lush light grey/off white on a stand.

Fell in love.

No good if its a longterm thing.

But great looking and loads of fun.

Mat, it's not a lease car. It's a Pcp personal contract purchase.

No real difference than having it on hp or a bank loan. You are the registered keeper. Yes there are t&c's but unless your not walking into the dealer with 17k in your sky rocket, you won't own the car.

Even if you bought your car with HP or a loan, miss two payments then see who owns it!  :signLOL:

Great fun these little renault hot hatches, i still have fond memories of driving my 172 Cup and also not so warm memories of the broken engine mounts, fried ECU and noisy alternator and countless other little foibles!
All part of the renault experience though and all fixed under warranty.

Hopefully the build quality has improved over the years.

I've always saved up and paid cash too, first time I've done finance, hence my 1001 questions at the dealer - he must have been sick of the sight of me!

so its not on lease then its a pcp deal ie you can give the car back after the 2 years or what ever terms you did or pay the outstanding balance to buy the car and the car belongs to you not a lease company like lex leasing

I wish you had said it cost more p/m as I have been trying to resist a car such as this. Im seriously tempted, wont be for a few months yet though unfortunately. What sort of mileage are you getting from it when your not kicking its teeth in?  :driver:

Yeah, you get the option to pay a 'balloon payment' which is a little over £8500 according to the website. After your 2/3 years are over.

My Golf was on PCP but that was £350 a month and worked out £75 of that was interest  :fighting:

Yeah, PCP so it's all in my name and at the end of 2 years I either hand it back, trade it up or buy it... if for whatever reason they try playing games, I'll pay it off and sell it. I'm aware of the old games at the end of term!

Edition30? Dunno yet, I haven't not kicked its teeth in! I'll do a run in it and see what I'd get in the real world just going to work and back.

For those worried about reliability, I had a 197 F1 for a bit over 2 years and the only thing it went in for was a creaky door hinge.

Talking of Bedford, Autocar took a Focus RS500 (345bhp), Clio 200 and a Megane 250 there a few months back. The Focus was only 3 seconds quicker round the circuit than the Clio (this was a mag feature) and the 250 went 4 seconds faster...

than the Focus!

I read about this a bit back and i'm still as confussed now as I was then..   I know the Megane is a lot more sure footed around corners than the Focus RS, but 4 seconds faster???  :surprised:  When the standard RS was locking horns with the R26R around all the different circuits it was only 1 second or so slower. Yet the RS500 has 45-50 more bhp and is now 4 seconds slower than the new 250, which I very much doubt is going to be quicker than the R26R round a track..
Something doesn't add up IMO and I would like to see another test with the 2 against each other TBH..

Apparently they did the timings on a public track day, which was a bit naughty in itself. Maybe the Megane got the clearest run of the 3?

There is a good vid on the evo website.
