Hi all,
I am starting to feel a little clutch slip, what is the most recommended clutch?
So far I have heard of the Sachs clutch but reports are it's quite heavy and sharp. Other option is the VWR clutch which is a little more cash.
Another question, do I need both the disc and cover plate or will just the disc suffice? I heard with just the VWR disc it still holds well and has same pedal feel as stock but the bite point is higher than if you get the cover plate and disc.

Anyone?

i am using a helix clutch on my ed30. Its slightly stiffer than standard but perfectly usable. Speak to rtech power for clutch prices..
-
I'm using the sachs upgraded plate and cover, the pedal is a little stiffer and the bite point is higher, its its been perfectly usable from day 1
-
i believe i have the vwr one, bitting point i thought was a bit lower than standard, heavy ish but no means too heavy at all.
-
I have the Sach's fitted to mine and my biting point is lower than on my std clutch, pedal is heavier too but then again I expected this.
-
Someone told me that the Sachs clutches are noisey and clunky at low speed/setting off. Any basis to this?

Absolute rubbish in my experience. I've had a Sachs clutch on my vRS for almost 50k miles and the only thing that is different to OEM is the pedal is a bit stiffer.
-
^^^^^^^Agreed, Thankfully.
I'd not heard of this before, if I had of done I maybe wouldn't of gone for it.
But no, there are no other problem's apart from slightly heavier and (currently) a bit lower biting point. Although I am led to beleive this will change with a bit more use.

In 50k miles my biting point and pedal stiffness is the same as day 1
The only problem i have ever heard of is "Clutch Judder" which is usually due to them not being run in properly when installed. JKM did mine and had the car for a couple of days to bed it in properly before returning it to me. :happy2:
Either that or they were just ragging it round Portsmouth for a laugh

Running a helix in my ed30 with a single mass flywheel for the last 1500k so far so good :happy2: and had it on the 1/4 mile last weekend well impressed

So you would say your biting point is still as stock Carl?
Place that fitted mine said that after a few mile's it would become more like it was.

Pretty much mate yeah. There may be a slight difference in pedal travel. But it's not something i have noticed to be honest.
I drove a mate's standard vRS recently and apart from almost pushing my foot through the floor when i pressed the pedal (i forgot how spongy they were ) i would say the biting point was the same.

I think they must have been talkin about SMF set-ups, they can rattle at tickover
-
Phew! thanks for the replies, I bought the Sachs clutch earlier so thank god you all agree it's ok. :happy2:

I'll see how it goes then mate, cheers.
It goes into gear with no issue's so it's not as if I'm not getting full disengagment.

It was probably me that confused things. Why do some people go for Sachs clutch + DMF and others go for SMF?

i said thr same on briskoda. i never noticed you had the sachs clutch until you told me, so its hardly a different feeling.
you should try a paddle clutch. my mates WR1 is horrible to drive and believe me you know its not standard when you press it down

Well, not sure why, but now with 400 mile on the clutch it seems to bite at the same point of my OE clutch.
That or I have just got used to it
The newness smell has gone too thanks goodness :signLOL:

I had an uprated Sachs clutch, clutch plate cover and SMF fitted a week ago (my OE clutch was beginning to slip after 30k miles so i decided to take the plunge sooner rather than later). The pedal feel is certainly a lot heavier and the biting point is slightly higher than my previous one. I was also aware of the "new smell" initially but that seems to have disappeared now, thankfully. There is a distinct chatter from the SMF at idle which could annoy a lot of people but i'm slowly getting used to it and all in all i'm a lot happier now in the knowledge that i now have a clutch that can more than cope with the increased torque running through my transmission. Hope this helps. :happy2:
