Title: smooth grill numberplate options
Post by: luca on February 08, 2009, 12:47:46 pm
Need a bit of advice. Im thinking of going for a smooth grill so what options do i have for the numberplate. I think my only type of plate would be a sticker type one but where can i put it.
I really want the smooth grill as i'll be doing a little vinyl wrapping in the next few months. Thinking of doing roof, spoiler and front splitter so should all tie in nicely

Thats the eternal question i am afraid, as a good place to put it has not popped up yet in my opinion.
I have been thinking about getting a smoothed grill and just keeping my plate in the window like Joe, until i get nabbed then just revert back to normal for spirited driving  and keeping my smoothed grill for shows and meets. Its a bummer but the Mk5 just does not lend itself to moving the plate.

God, I really tried this one when I did my grill, to be honest mate, with the plate anywhere other than on the front grill it looks pants IMO..

The best thing you can do for looks is get it smoothed and risk either a tiny front plate or sticker plate both in the stock location, or run with no plate at all..

Depends how hot they are on it around your area, I got stopped twice in 3 days for having my little plate on.. Looked awesome too!

I run my plate as small as legally possible...
The letters are standard size, but the margins etc as as small as allowed (11mm around the edge).
It's also only a 6digit plate, rather than standard XX11XXX 7digit plates.

It's velcro'd on and I also have a 3/4 plate.

Mine is a sticker plate. It's postioned under the nearside front headlight. For those that saw it at the Pod, ignore the positioning, I got it slightly wrong the first time - hence why it looked a little wonky.

I admit that it looks maybe a little sh!t, but when my car has the vinyl on then attention is detracted from the plate, and the continuation of the black from the vinyl onto the front grille works really well, and you kind of accept the plate more.

That probably won't make any sense until you all see the car in real life with the vinyl on! The next meet forrrrrrrrrr sure!

If you want to have a completely legal (in every respect) but without the oem number plate mount, it's about time I posted a How-To.

I've been meaning to but never got around to it. I'll do it and post a link in this thread.

Meanwhile, here's a velcro method : -

Mine (the v22 plate) is 101mm high (11mm+79mm+11mm) by 399mm wide (11mm+50mm+11mm+50mm+11mm+50mm+33mm+50mm+11mm+50mm+11mm+50mm+11mm)

As per the regs here:
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/v796.pdf

Normal plates sold are 520mm by 112mm
3/4 plates sold are 390mm by 84mm (I have one of these for the front as well).

They cocked it up,  i ordered a full size set (front and rear) and a smaller front (the one pictured with "cupra" text)

But only recieved full size rear.  Got the smaller front (doesnt have seat logo as i wanted) & instead of full size front, looks like i got an even smaller one (Pictured top with the seat logo)

Not very happy £50 Quality plates just not how i wanted them

Clearly the best thing to do is follow my lead and get a square plate on one side!

It's ok I don't mind if you do!

....

I've now posted my How-To  :-  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2081.new;topicseen#new

I've only dealt with a totally legal plate in regard to both materials and size etc.

Yes, I wish they could be legally smaller and stick-on etc but that's the way it is.
