I have been asking my contact at VW for a while now but she has now come through with the info I asked for.........
So the total number made before production was ceased was......
Two Hundred and twenty two, thats
222
-
.
Wow! A pleasant surprise in that it truly is a 'limited edition'. Is that worldwide or just UK?
And how many Edition 30's got built, I wonder?
-
Very rare!
-
Very rare!
....Unlike the Ed30.. At least around this neck of the internet woods.

....Unlike the Ed30.. At least around this neck of the internet woods.
Serious folding though for what effectively is the same car with different wheels and yellow stitching!
Not jealous just realistic.
-
wow , that is rare. nice one Nathan :notworthy:
I dont suppose you got a colour / gearbox type split did you too ? :ashamed:
I actually prefer the pirelli to the ed30. It just so happens that the ed30 primed everyone for a great tuneable car but VW made too many lol.
-
I've only seen one pirelli edition On the road. Having said that, in the month of ed30 ownership, I've also only seen one other ed30! I imagine quite a few ed30s have ended up as scrap!
-
^^^^
Somehow I don't expect Volkswagen will be complaining about the number of Ed30 sales
-
I imagine quite a few ed30s have ended up as scrap!
....I don't understand - Why do you say that?
-
Music to my ears
It is nice to know I have a rare model car - despite the fact that most black golfs with darkened rear windows and 18" wheels look similar !!!
It may also help a little come resale
Thanks for passing on the info
-
I have asked about colour/gearbox splits etc but that may or may not come my way. :happy2:
-
Interesting bit of info that.
-
Its a double edged sword that...
In many ways I'd be breakdancin in my kitchen to own something so rare, but then I'd feel really guilty about putting the miles on it or modding it.
As above ^^^^ a true limited edition....
-
^^ I agree Dave, and the other flip side is that it's making me want one!
-
Reading this just re-affirms to me why im after one! Just gotta wait for the right one to come along now....

Nothing to do with the seats or wheels (although the wheels have grown on me), more to do with future values.
-
I love the Pirelli wheels, far nice IMO than the Pescaras.

its still not exactly going to be an investment, itl still loose money, even if you never drive it.

it sure will its a Golf and will lose value just as much as any other golf :rolleye: i hate it when buy stuff like a normal car and never drive it  its no classic car and will take a good 30+ years for that.If you want a car to go up in value buy old classic stuff as my beetle cost me 3k years ago and is now valued at over 12k :P so you cant knock old cars
-
Not too sure Matt, 222 is a bloody low number, theres more ferraris allocated to the UK each year than that, then do the splits for colour/transmission Xenons - Odds are that if you wanted one with Silver/Xenons/DSG/RNS and roof you could be trying to get one from a pool of maybe 10 cars....
How about that for an Advert.....One of 10 golfs ever made.
Mates got an RS500 Cossy done 1500 miles - He's knocked back 40k for it
-

....I think that if you're into the futures market, then modern cars are not a wise commodity to invest in, Nath. Although there may be one or two exceptions in the supercar category.
-
^^^^
As Mat says: Cars are for driving!

Didn't say it wouldn't lose money, but as more people become aware of the rarity of this car the prices will remain higher that the equivalent GTi or ED30. And who said I wouldn't drive it etc?? :stupid:
And no Robin I'm not looking at the 'futures market'. I merely commented that I would like one for the collection.
-
Love my Pirelli and will enjoy driving and owning it. Like many have said very few cars are an investment and those that are go for silly money and are not cars like VW Golfs.
The future value does not bother me, whats more important is i have seen zero on the road since they were released. Of course theres 222 around and at some point im bound to be sitting in a traffic jam next to another one but hey thats life.
If you look at an BMW M3 compared to an M3 CSL there is a fair difference in price but what you have to remember is the CSL was way, way more expensive in the first place. Sure the Pirelli will be worth a little more than a common ED30 (LMAO) but not by much.
-
You do do why Vw only made 222 don't you?
They hated the seats :P
Only kidding it's a nice just like all Gti
-
Yeah we get you dont like the seats. Seats and wheels, wheels and seats, seats and wheels, wheels and seats. Gets a bit tired after a while. Dont forget the yellow stitching. :signLOL:
I can understand why some dont like the seats or wheels but put it another way if VW told customers how many ED 30's they were going to build then told you the number of Pirelli's they were making im sure alot of customers would have said sod the seats im getting one of those.
Please no one take offence to this as this is not a sweeping statement or aimed at any individual but i do sometimes get the impression that the green eyed monster is about. I could well be wrong because the Ed 30 is 99.99% the same car and i was trying to buy one when i saw a great spec Pirelli for the same price.
I think VW dropped the ball making so many ED30's and as a result has annoyed quite a few people (quite right to).
-
Well it's not quite as clear cut as it annoying people that they made more than they stated they would as a lot of us wouldn't have one if they hadn't!
-
I imagine quite a few ed30s have ended up as scrap!
....I don't understand - Why do you say that?
People binning them into trees etc!
-
.
I know it's just a matter of personal preference but I don't like the Pirelli's seats pattern  nor the yellow stitching. I don't even like the red stitching on the Ed30 though I do like what it has to offer performance-wise.
Car individuality can easily be achieved by modding - Mine's an obvious example.
-
Did someone mention the Yellow Stitching?? :P
-
its a car forum and everyone thinks 'theirs' is best due to x,y,z :signLOL:
ed30 owners won a watch when it was found to have a sleeper K04
pirelli owners even more so when VW decided to make a second special edition based on the ed30 template that had a K04 AND is rare.
remember the ed30 still isnt 'common'
the only downside being that some specific parts would be hard/expensive to replace as their isnt a pool of crashed cars to get spares from., as well as the fact that the Pirelli seems to have come with updated electronics setup.
both great cars, now who wants an R ?
-

Funny thing is, I have owned my pirelli for 18 months and not one person I know and have been in the car have ever mentioned the yellow stitching or tread pattern seats.
99.9% of the population will firstly see that it is a black golf and then see the GTi badge. Pirelli will mean nothing to them.
We will be lucky if it is worth more than £500 more than an equivalent GTi come trade in. The only difference it will make is that you will sell it quicker.
-
hopefully mrs wigit is getting a new job with a company car so the Pirelli will be seeing less use and having a make over (she hates the scirocco with a passion and won't drive it), it won't be appearing in a for sale section as consensus is its a keeper :happy2:
in reality you dont notice the yellow, and alcantara wins hands down, gutted i never ordered 2 now :sad1:
the reason there are only 222 is because on the whole they were factory order (apart from the VW job lot at the end) and it was a victim of the credit crunch

....Have you never heard of the Pirelli Calendar, dahling?
My very good friend, photographer Bob Freeman, shot the first Pirelli Calendar in the 1960's - It's been world famous ever since and a collector's item. Unfortunately I no longer have my personally signed copy with my name on it. But I still have his framed limited edition (250) litho print of his famous Beatles photo, signed "To Robin, in Friendship". I also have an Andy Warhol of Mick Jagger, but that's another story.

Any pics of this Pirelli Edition , of the bits that differentiate it from the other cars? Is it GTI or ED 30 mechanical specs?

I've done 33.5k miles now.
Bought to drive... drive i shall do so...
Everyone on this forum knows the Pirelli is rare... but to 99.9% of people out there.. its just a Golf GTi... with a Pirelli badge stuck on (which some people think ive stuck on :signLOL:)

Even rarer is the yellow/mustard coloured Pirelli I know of only 1 in the U.K and it resides it scotland, i did see one for sale down south but not sure if its the one thats up here now.
-
Well in Lancashire I maybe only see one other Ed30 a month, if that. And on the road (as opposed to at a show) I've only seen one other CW Ed 30 in my first year of ownership (and that was a 5dr not 3dr).
Most normal people have no idea what an Ed 30 is or how it is different to a normal gti, but I do enjoy telling them it's just a little bit more special than a standard gti!!

That wasn't an official UK colour Keith so must have been privately imported. :happy2:

Its a shame they couldnt have designed a modern version of the P slot wheel for this car.

They did!
-
I have a theory :chicken:
The highest Edition 30 plaque number we have seen so far is Mr Moschops with 2275. If they made 222 Pirellis, would it be safe to assume that there are in fact three more Ed 30's produced after Mr Moschops's, and with the Pirellis that makes a nice round 2,500 of what essentially is the same car?
Or am I just being silly and creating theories that don't exist

Ive never seen one in 'real life' only pics on here , in fact untill i joined here I didnt know the Pirelli Mk5 at all. What I meant though , was a solid wheel with just the P slots running round the outer edge , but in 18" size....

The newer version is exactly as you say, a more modern interpretation of the classic 'P' Pirelli wheel.
-
Well Rich's Silver Pirelli is just perfect if you ask me. :congrats: I love the wheels and the interior. I agree about not modding them aswell....well to a degree. They definitely need the Eibachs/H&Rs lowering springs and they look amazing. Revo and TBE are subtle mods too which also keep the car looking OEM.
I'd have one, but I think I am still smitten with the S3.
-
took me about 2 months of it sat on the drive to get the P thing with the wheels :stupid:
-
Find a blue graphite one and its even rarer! only seen one on the road in bradford. Being used by a local dealer :fighting: :fighting: :fighting:

I'd feel really guilty about putting the miles on it or modding it.
I read a quote somewhere before that says "Not putting miles on your car to keep it's value is like not having sex with your girlfriend to keep her ready for the next guy". Just enjoy it!
(But seriously, I totally understand why you'd want to keep such a rare model in best possible shape.)
-
Just colour your stitching yellow on your ED30 and job done

The number of years required to have it appreciate in the 'modern classic' way of things is disproportionate to the joy you'll rob yourself of in the time you own it waiting for the value to climb. Far too many years for that to be meaningful. In another 20 years or so it may be different.
I have the DSG version of which I think 70 odd were made. I love it, I care for it, I lavish money on it (£10k to date in parts and labour) and I use it.
They're a fabulous car modified if done right, ameliorated is the right word here . It also holds it's own against the mk7 GTI we have. One soothes you and can do as you ask on the road within reason and the other feels like it's looking for a fight. I wouldn't want it any other way, it eclipses the mk7 if you analyse it as a drivers car. Can't see myself selling anytime soon and I'm into my 5th year, which is also something of a miracle
Be the person that has the best out of it rather than pass on an acquisition :happy2:
