Title: r32 engine question........
Post by: joesgti on October 06, 2010, 09:21:40 am
What are the differences between mk4 R32 and mk5 R32 engine's?

what bhp does each one have? from what i can see the mk4 has 225bhp and the mk5 has 250bhp?? is this correct? if so why is the mk5 one quicker?

I thought the Mk4 was 240???  I did have one and I'm sure it was about that.
The Mk5 was 250 with a slightly different map and internals (cams etc)
The Mk5 0-60 could of been done with DSG?

The MKIV is ~240bhp IIRC....

Personally, I can't get over the chintsy, spangly MKV R32 grill... the MKIV is a nicer looking beast, I think anyway.

I wouldn't say so.....  The engine left NA with uprated cams, map, zorst etc, the mk4 always came out with more power and torque.  The Mk5 I'm guessing was a little heavier too.  Chassis in the Mk5 was better.

they had the 6463 update at vw did the mk4 that sorted out a flat spot in the rev range and also upped the power to 240ish bhp make sure the car has had this update

Same. Would have a MK4 R32 over a MK5 one all day long purely for looks.

I am pretty sure the actual engines are the same.
The 6463 update was because the Mk4 owners realised this and got upset.

I would never get a car with any sort of "transplant" or new engine from a different car. Far too many variables that could go wrong! I saw this black gti with a edition 30 transplant the other day! Dodgy looking front splitter ;) hahaha

I wouldnt buy if there are no receipts for the transplant mate too risky on a 3.2 lump, Full VAG history with all haldex services done and the 6463 update is what you want. 3 doors in DBP if you can find a good one... the fastest and best colour  :happy2:

I'd go for the one with the least miles.
The cams in the Mk4 don't fit in the Mk5, so there are differences.
If it helps..... My old R!

MKIV R32 was 241ps or 237bhp - 3256lb/1480kg           - 160bhp/ton
MKV R32 was 250ps or 246bhp - 3565lb/1620kg (DSG) - 152bhp/ton

Figures from VW Driver magazine. :happy2:

^^^ Try R32oc.co.uk, it's an excellent resource!  :happy2:

I'm agonising over the ED30/S3/MKIV R32 debate at the moment, but the extra cylinders are kinda winning TBH...

If you can find either a red or a dark grey MKIV (esp w/sunroof!) then you're onto a winner.  The DPB is by far the nicest looking colour, though...

Joe, I've been looking at this R32, £11.5k, but top class condition:-
