....You think that's a Gannet? :stupid: Nah, it's a Vulcan in Arctic camouflage - Ask Hedge . Actually it could be a Victor.
You've totally conveyed the feeling of flight. If you could manage to get continuity of commissions I reckon you could easily be a pro photographer. A good agent would cream off at least 25% but 75% of something is better than 100% of nothing. I guess that it's still very competitive as it was when I worked as a Designer/Art Director. Also, financial investment in the gear can be expensive, especially if studio work, though you can hire studios, assistants, etc.
On the other hand, there's a lot to be said for shooting what you want rather than what a paying client wants.

You last comment is precisely why i still love it... Its a bit like become i pro musician, its all fun and games until money is involved!
This was an awesome road to drive up... any guesses

I love the varied natural lighting and the enormous distance - Those peaks faaaar awaaaay in the upper left, outlined by white cloud.
It's very 'painterly' and there's a lot going on in it. I'm now enjoying the quite intense green on the slopes. And, of course, the road invites!
-
Glad you like that one robin!

Stelvio pass? We was going to do it on the last forum ring trip I think. I'm sure Jay mentioned driving it after Switzerland (place called Chur) Come to think of it, the Stelvio pass might be Italy :ashamed:

Very nice. :happy2:
-
I have a question Rich.
As it is pitch black or close enough, apart from when the firework goes off, how do you expose for the scene?
-
Mega long exposure of couple of seconds perhaps??
-
Nope. If you did that the firework would be horrendously over.
-
Wud?
Maybe I read the manual wrong lol.
For fireworks thought trick was tripod but long exposure of few seconds to get enough light into the lens to get the effect.
But dunno never actually put it into practice!!
-
Thanks guys....
Setting the camera in manual mode... ISO800, F11 and 3.2sec exposure (for the portrait one)
Shot in RAW so that anything thats blown can be brought back/saved..... if i showed you the uneditied version on the first one, you wouldnt believe it!
-
How did you get those values Rich?
-
I started off with an educated guess as to what it would be and adjusted.... some i took were longer exposures!
-
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm2.static.flickr.com%2F1192%2F5140600247_f0ffdbeafb_b.jpg&hash=d03d8d2517e03ab70822e9d7a7735f32997dd179)
You live in Bath or near Rich?

Worth getting out of bed for! However, I'm not sure your fiancee would appreciate it if you spotted such a moment midst passion with her!
Capture the moment!
Btw, I showed your Robin bird pic to a pro friend and he said that all the pro bird photographers make sure they get a reflection/glint in a bird's eye and they'll Photoshop it in if necessary.

How on earth do you manage that? I've tried a couple of times and I'm crap at it! What settings and what lens are you using? Very impressive I have to say :happy2:

Running with the above theme(s), have you ever captured an English/Western European hornet? I've always been keen to see one in that kind of shot.

Fabulous (as always!) bird pics, Rich :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
You'd love my garden: Chaffinches, Goldfinches, Greenfinches, Bullfinches occasionally, Robin (of course!), immaculate Blackbirds (regularly bathing), Both types of Woodpecker, Dunnocks, Wren, all the Tits including Longtail occasionally, Thrush, Redwing (seasonally), Starlings, Jackdaw, Magpies, plus immaculate gulls on roof and overhead. Talking of overhead: Buzzards and occasional raid onto my 'Bird Cafe' by a Sparrowhawk. Oooh, I forgot a pair of Collared Doves who come regular as clockwork every day. Sparrows of course.
-
Thanks Robin. Sounds like you have quite a gathering in your garden. We have only moved in to this property so we are just beginning to try and attract some wildlife. :happy2:

....Together with my wildlife pond it's another of my serious interests and I keep a pair of binoculars on the kitchen window sill and a cat-apult!
I can give you plenty of tips on how to attract and help safeguard bird life in a garden. Probably best by PM or a new thread if you want rather than hijack this one. :happy2:

How do you do it in CS4?
Ive made a brush preset.
Create a watermark in photoshop, mine is 300x79px. then click 'edit' and 'define brush preset'
Then you can change the colour/transparency of it. :happy2:

Can I just say that you are a stunning photographer. Loverly clear, sharp and pure photographs you have taken.
I am a motorsport photographer and seeing your shots of more 'still' life, I may give it a go.

I'd love you to camp out in my garden, Rich, and take some birdie pics - I get a whole range of all sorts.

Rich's shot of the upper surface shows the care and attention she received from the painters these last few weeks.

Thanks lads. It wasn't an ideal day as shooting things in the sky when it's over cast is a nightmare.
I was also using my dads nikon d700 and 150-500mm lens which I'm not familiar with. Too many buttons so it was a fire and hope situation. :-)

He really is professional standard but I can understand him not wanting to get tied down by such demands. Clients can be arseholes and you don't get to photograph what you want so much. And what you have to invest in gear to compete is megabucks. Gone are the days of David Bailey, a simple 35mm camera, a pretty girl and the right social contacts.
But do you have any of your pics in commercial photo libraries, Rich?

Revived this thread from the dead there! But it was worth whiles because the picture is amazing! Great shot, I like how you have the trees in focus and the front out of focus. I tend to always go for the front in focus and gradually more blur the further back, but it would have been so wrong for this shot.
