Title: Car stalls when stationary
Post by: big al on October 09, 2010, 12:28:12 pm
Hi guys, having come back from up north just to pick up a spare set of wheels, drive was fine there, and coming back, until I pulled off the motorway and was sat at a junction, and the car suddenly cut out, engine died, and battery warning light came on. Turned the engine off and on again, and pretty much fine, but then every time I stopped after that it cut out and the battery light came on.

Does anyone know the cause of this? Is it just a case of buying a new battery? or something more sinister? When I pulled onto my drive, with the engine on, the rev meter was flicking to 1100, then back to 600 and kept doing that even though car was in neutral.

(I have done a search for this, but only found one about the car almost cutting out, which could be the same problem as mine, but wanted to make sure!)

No probs Al let me know hopefully its nothing to serious, does it drive fine once you moving ie no loss in power might be a loose pipe.

Nope fine, Pulling away is a bit jerky, but that is probably something to do with the engine only just starting and the revs being off.

Thought I would start it up today to see how it was, the rev needle is all over the place, sounding like its about to stall, and just coughing and spluttering all the time, didn't try to drive it, just wanted to see if it was any better/worse than yesterday? Will prob have to sort out the VCDS, but wanting to know if anyone may know what is causing it.

Boost leak?  One of the bottom hoses from the intercooler.  Do you have a forge dv?  The top cap can come loose and cause leaks.

could it not be a leak or faulty PCV system, loss of vacum can affect the engine idle, http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=15111.0 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=15111.0)

Think it is probably a broken PCV. Been looking on google and seems likely.
There is what seems like a bit of spray on my Forge pipes, Not sure if htat is connected.
Will I be OK to drive to the garage if it is a broken PCV?
