i know there are a few converts on here well im considering going the other way!
so...what do i need to know?
the only reason i want the trophy is the seats...can i get those seats in a 182 cup? were they an optional extra?
Going to swap my car, want something NA and reasonably quick with a max budget of 6ish k
-
Are you having problems??
-
:jumpmove: and another one :congrats:
any way yes you can get a 182 ff with those seats in but the trophy has sachs dampers on it and is holding money at the mo so budget 7k ish and ask if its had the dampers rebuilt as they need doing after 5 years or something like that. Jhtrophy loved his and will be on later i am sure
-
no problems(apart from needing to get REVO'd ASAP) just want something cheaper! ill be selling my house shortly and will need a bigger deposit for moving south due to cost of living.
plus never owned a NA car before, as far as i can tell there's alot less that can go wrong.
I will be keeping my eyes open for a 182 with the trophy seats! My budget is flexible anyway.
did consider a type R...but im still not convinced haha

i was running a type r for 2 weeks as of last friday, they are awesome little car's and by far out handle the mk5 golf. Fully independant rear susspension is awesome! although you really have to spank them to start moving! :rolleye:
Just read your problem thred and some symptoms are the same as i had on my KO3 engine, over boost etc etc :scared:
-
was going to get another type r  would have been number 3 for me but thought nah been and done that so clio just had to be done :driver:
-
just been looking at a trophy running 375bhp :signLOL: mad man
-
if you need any pointers or things to check before you go look just send us a pm :happy2:

For everyday driving id get a low mile pre faclift type r (dont like facelift)

Has got to be said, if you want worry free motoring then the Civic makes a bucket load more sense than a Renault.
Clutter is superb, but you've got to get a good one, or one with a good warranty!!

Have you checked the MAF, boost pipes, dump valve.... :signLOL:
-

-
yeah but god with an exhaust on and induction kit they sound
-
-
two good cars, trophy= best fwd car ever. type r= great, no torque and dare i say bit common.
-

Even better with a JRSC strapped on..
-
i remember when jr racing did the one they had years i was tempted when i had my first type r :rolleye:
-
Poor Mr Evo 6
No grunt on the straights!
-
The Trophy will out-handle 99% of other cars on a good twisty road. I went from a 182 to the GTI, the only thing which I didnt like was nothing really happens until 5000 rpm but then all hell breaks loose lol :happy2:
RS Tuning in Leeds will remap them so they have a "better" torque curve.
Just make sure, as said above, the dampers have been serviced, as they are around £2K for new ones if I recall :surprised:
On a side note, 182's are going for £4000 now and are better spec'd than Trophys, Xenons Cruise Etc
Matt

If I can get a low mileage 182 with trophy seats I would but I think I'd want the cup pack...
-
The best Clio (Non Trophy) is a 182 with "cup packs", i.e. it has the cup suspension, spoiler, splitter, Xenons, half leather seats etc.
The "Cup" 182 is the cheap one with no extras and rubbish cloth seats, no Climate Control (often abit cheaper as they were cheaper to buy in the 1st place)
The Trophy seats were a very very very rare option on the 182 options list, they are Recaro Treadlines (about £500/600 to buy secondhand)
Hope this helps mate. :happy2:
-
You'd be likely to get a 197 for Trophy money, too, so it'd be worth trying one of those as well. More room and a more grown up feel to the tin can mk2 cars.
-
Trophy is a cracking little car. I had mine for 4 years and loved every minute. Need to keep the revs high as previously said, but it will surprise a lot of cars on the b roads and the twistys!
Driving it always brought a smile to my face. There are better specced 182's out there but having driven a 182 cup and a Trophy there is a definate difference. Especially when you unpin the dampers in the Trophy.
Plenty of useful info found here. Nice bunch of guys over there too http://cliotrophy.co.uk/forum (http://cliotrophy.co.uk/forum)
-
the clio thing is complicated, best one for track is 172 cup, best for road trophy, best everyday as said above 182 with cup pack. rare with recaros though but few put them in after. sach refurb is about 500 quid, the trophys are ace, but the trick dampers are best suited to british b roads as its the damping that is so good and set up for that car. a 172 cup is more fun on track and with a couple of hundred quid spent on coils and brakes, mad fast :happy2:

197 are more grown up but the worst clio in recent years in terms of driving.
-
In your opinion, of course. There's still no harm in trying one if it's within budget, though.
-
Must admit the 197's on coilovers and spacers do look stunning.... :happy2:
-

no harm at all, not really just my opinion to be fair, most people including renaultsport themselves, the 197 feels much better built than 172/182 but i cant see the point in a grown up clio to be honest, that bit is my opinion :happy2:
-
A 197 has to have a Cup chassis, and then it's out of your budget. The 200 is leagues ahead of both.

slightly biased :signLOL: the funny thing is that the current 200 is not that much faster or any more fun than the mk1 172 from 10 years ago, the reason lots of people are buying the 200 is due to build quality, image and puplicity that came with the r26r.
-
The 200 with Cup chassis is superb at cornering. It corners so much flatter than a 197 Cup. Saw one on slicks at a track day at Bedford and it was running rings round some some big boys' toys inc. 911's and GTR's.
-
Mate of jhtrophys races them ie the new ones and his mate fixes em so between them I think they know these cars inside out.
-
the 172 doesnt have traction control...or is it abs it doesnt have?
i think the 182 with the (think this is what they have been calling it) "Full fat cup pack" and trophy seats is what im looking for.
and i need to make sure the cam belt is done too as i think thats an expensive task
then my mrs has reminded me about the cupra r's  i always liked them.
-
Full fat has all the toys and the cup not cup packed car has no abs or traction control and is 20kg lighter too and has nothing good inside even the stereo is crap.
-
Oh and check the engine mounts and exhaust hangers at the back. Engine mounts is easy just grab the back of the engine and rock it back and forth you will see the engine mount move if it's got play in it and for the exhaust just grab the tips and see underneath if you can and look at the hangers
-
I shall be getting a 172 Cup in the next year or so for my cheap track toy.. The 'proper' Cup version IMO..

Absolutely, but the 200 is only an evolution of the 197 anyways - so it stands to reason they've made it a bit better as time's gone by. I drove a few 197s with the intention of going balls out on a cheaper car, and they just weren't good enough.. I'd rather have a 1*2 for that purpose.
I totally agree about it being no quicker or more fun either, they've had a great recipe for a long time with the Clio.
-
I remember driving the 197 when it first came out and was left totally deflated and underwhelmed :sad1: Just seemed to make an awful lot of noise and didn't sem to go anywhere  I had a CTR at the time too, so was use to NA power. The 200 (although i've not had the chance to drive one) seems a total different kettle of fish from what I have heard/read/seen.
Like all Renaultsports though, you should never by the brand new model. As within a year or 2 Renault will always add a 'better', 'special addition' model to the range and leave you wanting to find a little bloke and have a fight.. :fighting:
-
Ha ha! Deffo going to happen, so long as it isn't a R26.R style version, I'll just have to suck it up!
I think the 200 is due a swan song edition soon though, I believe the emissions Police are going to finally kill that engine soon and it'll be F/I for the next gen.

Pretty sure you'll be ok Mike, as the 200 must be the last of the line for that model (hence the best), surely? :happy2:
-
they wont make any more crazy stuff :signLOL: renault pulled the plug on renaultsport building cars like the, trophy,v6 r26r due to them not making money, hence the more user friendly current range and it worked, look how many people on here are now buying! seems to also be an increase in people buying the older stuff, maybe due to publicity around the r26r ring time? but anyway, renaultsport have being making the best fwd hot hatches for the last 10 years, i have had 3, fancy an alpine though now :signLOL:
