Did you do the mod yourself, i.e. turn the cap? As mine's on the p*** a bit and I could do with knowing how it's done.
Nice :happy2:
-
So did it just go on or did it need modding? like i thought
-
i bought the modded one chaps, i did find this though
The audi r8 oil cap depends on where you get it from, eg awesome gti have already modified theres to sit the correct way around, on the r8 the engine must sit in different and the oil cap faces the side. if you have brought it from the dealer which i did to save a few quid it isnt modified and has to be taken apart (very easy) it clips apart, use a stanley knife and cut around 6 grooves and clip it back in so the top is rotated around a bit so it faces foward.
and this
1) Chrome plastic bling
2) Plastic cap upper
3) Plastic cup lower, (with metal retainer/latch)
The cap has 2 gaskets. One regular gasket to seal the actual oil filling hole and the other one a gasket right under the plastic upper cap that I am guessing was used to seal the cap to the engine cover on the R8.
Take off the upper cap gasket, (not the bottom cup seal), and take a look at the circumference before you do anything else. You will see some raised locating ridges. Remember these as they are important later.
Pry the top cap off of the bottom cup, (this was the most apprehensive part of this whole procedure as the cap is expensive!). I did it with a thin screwdriver but be careful and DO NOT PRY on the upper chrome bling edge!
When you have the cap and cup separated you will see that there are some raised locating nubs in the inside of the cup that locate in corresponding cut out slots in the cap.
Remember the ridges I mentioned before? Turns out that they are located exactly where slots need to be cut to allow the cap to align on the cup in the correct orientation for a TDI, (and maybe for an R32 too? ).
Take a sharp Exacto knife and cut a slice at the ridges down until you get to the first lip, (look at the factory slots if you need to see how far down to cut). Once the cuts are made I used a small pair of electricians pliers to break the plastic so I was left with a new slot that the upper cap could now line up with in the correct orientation for the TDI. You will need to make 2 of these slots, (180 degrees apart. The locating ridges are in the correct locations.)
Line the upper cap locating ridges with the new slots, (you might want to compare to your stock cap to make sure you have the slots right), and snap the cap back together. No need to glue it together or anything unless you really got enthusiastic when you took it apart , (really no need. It isn't THAT tight. )
Install the gasket and the seal and it will look like the Audi factory made you a one off cap just for your TDI!
Have fun!

I saw the oil cap a few weeks back. Was gonna buy it but then decided against it. Might go for it again.

Nice on Shaun I think I might well get one of those :happy2:
-
i got one of those for my mk4 anni. its not on the mk5 though
-
It looks good and I was tempted but I avoided it on the grounds that it's an oil filler cap with a bit of shiny on it. That is all.
