Title: Mirror advice needed....unfortunately!
Post by: JPW on October 17, 2010, 12:05:40 pm
I had good intentions with going for a bike ride this morning.

Half asleep I caught the NS wing mirror on the garage door.

There is a small scuff to the housing, but the glass and the indicator are smashed.

What are my options?  They are powered, fold and have the puddle lights fitted.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Doh - I bet that wiped the sleep from your eyes!  :booty:

Anyhow, here goes (for model year 2007 onwards - check the 10th digit of your VIN):

The replacing of mirror glass and indicator lens is really very straighforward.  Download the relvent workshop manual from my sticky thread.

The quality of the paint repair will be down to the competency of the tool holding the paintbrush!

HTH

OK, further to a PM from the OP - I'm pretty certain the indicator lens comes complete with the LED bulbs (because it is listed in Model Group 9 in ETKA - ie electrics, rather than body section).

The silver reflector (for the indicators) is not available as a separate part - either a complete new mirror assembly from VW at around £85, or a visit to a scrappy or VW breaker.

Thanks very much for the advice and part numbers etc... Sean.

Oh well these things are sent to challenge us.

I will use the folding mirrors from here onwards!

Just make sure you then don't ding your door skin!  Maybe the mirror (unfolded) is cheaper than a new door skin! :ashamed:

That was my logic, better to hit a mirror than bodywork!

But there's less clearance in the garage than my old car :-(

Is it worth considering something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK-5-2003-08-DOOR-FLAT-HEATED-WING-MIRROR-GLASS-/330482656717?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4cf24d25cd (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK-5-2003-08-DOOR-FLAT-HEATED-WING-MIRROR-GLASS-/330482656717?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4cf24d25cd) ?

Thanks for all of the advice Sean. I will certainly heed it.
I'll speak to the local Stealer in the morning.

Cheers Darren.
I've ordered the indicator assy & new mirror glass & I think that I can touch up the housing fingers crossed!

I'll see how I get on, but thanks for the offer.
