Guys, can you help?
Wife's Golf is having a service this Thursday at Sutton Coldfield VW (Venture) and found that the spare key has a flat battery (lack of use). They are charging £3 for a replacement battery but if the car needs coding, it jumps to £50. Heard of this one before?
Ta. :happy2:

Just change the battery yourself, heres a how to with pictures http://www.riskin.org/vwkey/ (http://www.riskin.org/vwkey/), obviously at your own risk.
Can't see why it would need coding, but i stand to be corrected by those in the know.

Thank you. Not feeling that brave if they do it for £3 but its the "Sorry Sir, but it'll need reprogramming" that I don't want to hear
I've saved that guide as a favourite and see what they say. Any more advice welcome.

Anil,
If it is flat then the chances are that it will need recoding.
I'm not at home at the moment, but I'll PM you the instructions.
I'm assuming it's you from the RX8OC!
I'm over here on the darkside now ;-)
John (JWatts from RX8OC)
* Just checked and the link that I had has gone Anil - I'll see if I saved it somewhere.

John, you've tracked me down :signLOL:
How you doing mate?
I'll get the battery done by them and hope you can find the link. :happy2:
Nice hearing from you again :happy2:

Very well.....you have PM, give it a go.

Ive got a brand new key that I am taking in on Wednesday morning to be coded. It is still in the VW wrapper so i do not know if it has a battery but would assume so. My question is can I actually code the thing myself or is that taking DIY too far? :scared:

There are two different codes that need matching to your car.
One is for the remote for alarm and central locking, which you can do yourself, this is the one that the battery is needed for.
The other code is the immobiliser one, which is what the transponder holds. This doesn't need a battery, but needs coding with special equipment that the dealer has. Depending on the age of the car, some other people have gear that can do this.
Brief answer, but it's late :indifferent:

Thanks JPW I will give it a go tonight although the post below makes it sound like i will only get 50% of the way there.
The dealer has told me it is half an hours work and will cost me £65. Would be nice to put that money towards the reconditioning of my alloys :)

Let me know how you get on.
-
Tried it several times and the car would bit react I.e the horn would not beep.
My key is still in two pieces and font want to out them together unless I have to, would that matter?
-
Have you tried both instructions.
Mine worked better for the Seat instructions, even though it's clearly a VW.
-
Well, the dealer replaced the battery and coded it to the car, all for £3  :happy2:

£65 later and I feel used after reading that last post :(
