Looking to purchase the VW T40057 tool to aid in releasing oil from the oil filter housing during oil changes.
I've got a PDF with an AUS VW Part no. - Do we have a UK Part no. for this please?
It's one of these for a visual reference :happy2:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.accessoriesbin.com%2Fimages%2Fdrain-tool-1s.jpg&hash=f087e8a78b68d9d2e5cad158f272fb85f1f9e58a)
Thanks
-
That IS the part number. Just make sure your stealer uses the 'tools' section of their parts ordering system.
-
Oh, BTW, you know that isn't for draining the oil from the sump?
-
How much do these cost?

Can't remember - bought mine 4 years ago!

Thanks Sean. Prompt and accurate as ever :happy2:
Oh, BTW, you know that isn't for draining the oil from the sump?
Indeed, it was in a rush pre-leaving for my VW DLR. I meant the filter assistant pipe
BTW guys, I walked away from that as I was quoted £102 inc vat by the guy on parts :scared:
Looks like a second hand one then...
-

WHAT - rip-off barstewards. :fighting:
I'm sure mine was only about £35. Try a Skoda dealer, or try TPS.
-
^^ Yeah, no kidding. I was surprised too.
Even £35 is a lot for a small pipe even with VW Tax.
I'll give ebay and the aforementioned a go. Cheers :drinking:

Would this be any use??
Wouldn't mind one myself to be honest.

2 for $40
$12.95 shipping to UK, wonder if they would do a group buy lol
-
Guys what are you messing about at. :wink:Just use a screwdriver to push it up and hook it over then when drained push it back. I have done 10 changes this way on my car with no problems. :happy2:

You know that isn't genuine? Whilst it may do the job - I'd be a tad cautious. The bit which screws into the bottom of the filter bowl is just plastic, whereas the genuine is brass. And the hose is clear pvc, whereas the genuine is like a silicone rubber. So it may melt if you try to use it whilst the oil is hot!

Yes, but it's rather messy that way! The idea of the tool is that it keeps oil away from the after-run coolant pump and other gubbins which won't appreciate being showered in hot oil!

Yeah, I know it is'nt the same as the genuine one, but for me as a DIY mechanic and not using it day in day out, I feel it maybe of benefit to me without paying a fortune for a genuine one. However, if a genuine one pop's up at the correct price (please, anybody point me in the right direction) then I too would rather have the real macoy. :happy2:

Fairy nuff. I understand your point on the DIY issue. :happy2: It's no difference between some peeps being happy with shyte Laser tools (speaking from painful experience from a number of their products), wheras others will have nothing but Snap-On in their tool boxes (and most of their stuff is grossly over-rated!).
Anyway, reading further on www.MobilFaction.com/T40057.html, they state the plastic resin they use to cast the black bit with is heat resistant - but I'm still a tad concerned about the four plastic 'tags' which release the drain valve on the bottom of the filter housing www.MobilFaction.com/photos.html - these may be prone to snapping off. :sad1:
Maybe you can be the fourm 'road tester'?
-
Oh, their video is a bit naff - aint they ever heard of lighting! :P
-
Haha. Agreed and agreed :signLOL:
I looked at the photo's and wondered about their durability, then started wonder how I could make my own :happy2:
Having not yet changed my oil yet Sean, how hard is the valve to push up to release it? Do you think enough to potentially snap the lug's off then? If they did snap off, would they get lodged in and create a problem?
Need to way up possibilties before being the guinea pig. :happy2:

The valve has quite a beefy return spring on it, so it takes quite a bit of force. But the problem of using a screwdriver to release it is that you may end up canting the valve over at an angle, and then not be able to re-seat it - and this could also be an issue if one or more of those tags snaps off. And the other issue of releasing it with a screwdriver is that you WILL get an armfull of hot oil. If you have a friendly farm vet - blag a few of those really long gloves that go up to your armpit - the ones they use when the vet sticks his arm up a cows ar$e or fanny!
If those tags do happen to snap off, I can't see them getting wedged anywhere - they'll probably just drop out when you unscrew it.
And it isn't a necessity to use that tool. If you havn't got one, just get an old corn flakes packet and fold it into a v-shaped funnel (shiny side to oil) and wedge it under the filter bowl.
Probably the biggest issue is finding a socket big enough to undo the filter bowl. It is 36mm, and ideally, you need a 6 point socket, rather than a 12 point. And don't be gash - my local Audi stealer used a pair of fcuking STILSONS to remove the filter bowl on my RS4 - they really are utter incompetent w@nkers!!!! :fighting: :fighting: :fighting: :fighting:
Oh, and don't over-tighten it either - it says '25+5Nm' on the bowl for a reason.

I just checked the price of T40057 and our cost is £85.35 + vat! :surprised:

Is that via TPS?
I wonder if I tried to purchase a job lot from my supplier - what do peeps think would be an acceptable price to pay?

Whilst I appreciate your point its really not hard to avoid getting covered in oil, you just move your arm and use a long screwdriver. I often cover my hand in an old rag which offers some protection. And as for getting other things covered in oil the nipple points straight down with nothing in its way to get covered, its not pressurised and is quite robust. If it stays up you simply move it back with your hands when you take the oil filter out.
IMO you simply dont need the tool

I know you don't need the tool - but it does help. :grouphug:
Oh, can you train the monkeys at my local stealer how to drain oil without spilling it everywhere?
-
Our local TPS wont sell tools to anyone as they say they are not allowed. I have an alternative supplier for tools. Im sure the tool could just be copied easily enough.
Tbh ive never got oil from an FSi filter on my self. The newer 2.7/3.0 tdi's oil sump drain on the other hand
-
Well, this Mobilfaction would do a GB at $15 eack inc postage to 1 UK address for a minimum of 8 drain tool's.
May take a while to get 8 people wanting one.
Any update to a genuine one (at reduced cost)
-

Someone is feeding you BS. The only time TPS wont sell tools is if they don't have the part number - TPS have no facility to look - unlike the actual stealers.
I have an alternative supplier for tools.
Care to share? PM me if you prefer!
Im sure the tool could just be copied easily enough.
The genuine tool is really well engineered - with a lovely swivel in the brass connector. That yankie plastic one doesn't have the swivel, so when you tighten it to the filter bowl, the hose will swing like a spitting rattlesnake!

Give them a call on 01908 625000. Even with part numbers they still say thay cant do tools.

Shame that. Do you know who makes this tool for VAG?
-
I think the original tool is made by Matra.
ECS have a copy of it - http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Golf_V--2.0T/Tools/Maintenance_Tools/ES8616/
It would also be worth ordering one of their 6 point sockets too - http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Golf_V--2.0T/ES240945/
The ECS parts are manufactured by http://www.schwabentools.com/ who sell via ECS or http://www.pelicanparts.com/index.htm

That is maybe an anomoly from your local TPS branch - because mine is still able to order in tools.

I'm not 100% sure - but most VAG oil related tools are made by Hilgendorf (well the DSG filler and the Haldex filler defo are). I'll try to remember to check tomorrow.
-
is this not the biggest waste of time / money / room in your tool chest ? you are going to be drain the sump anyway and replacing the filter .
buy a box of rubber gloves and save a shed load

Actually, that web site says it's made by Schwaben, and the flash image also shows Schwaben. Not cheap though!

I'm sure you could get one cheaper this side of the pond.
The ECS parts are manufactured by http://www.schwabentools.com/ who sell via ECS or http://www.pelicanparts.com/index.htm
Hmmmmm . . . I don't actually think these Schwaben are actually OEM tools! And there are some major errors on that Pelican website.

LOL.
It is actually quite a good tool - it stops hot oil from pi$$ing all over your after-run electric coolant pump.

If you slow down to a gallop Sean you might have read it as it was intended.
Matra manufacture the OEM tool as I said above. Matra manufacture a large number of the OEM tools along with Hazet and others.
I linked to the ECS tool which is manufactured by Schwaben and stated in my post 'ECS have a copy of it'.
I later went on to say that ECS and Pelican Parts supply the Schwaben range, I certainly didn't say they were OEM tools.
A very comprehensive supplier of the OEM tools is here -
http://www.samstagsales.com/vwaudi2.htm
-
Stu - yesterday was a long! I just re-read your post, and noticed the error of my ways! :ashamed:
Anyway, that Schwaben one looks much better than that all plastic version - but there is a notable cost difference too.
Does anyone know of any UK or EU independent suppliers?
-
Found another one which look's more robust (also looks like OP's original picture) unfortunately in the States again

But if somone wants to order a job lot, they may budge.
Looks quality though. :happy2:

Hmm, didn't see that bit, but after looking at their Ebay listing's an option to ship to the UK is there.
Last ones sold on Ebay went for $42. Shipping to UK for just one is $13.
I have mailed them to see what they would do five for.
-
I would be up for one if a GB was on the cards.

Still waiting on a reply from supplier.
If it's acceptable and we could get the number's, then it could be a goer!!!
-
I am in for the GB as long as we can get a good price :happy2:
Do they supply a 36mm socket as well? It would be useful to get both if possible...
-
I'll send them another mail to see if they do the 36mm socket's too mate.
-
Put me down for one price dependant
-
Just had a reply back from Fred re these Oil Drain Tool's.
He would sell 5 for $32 each plus $30 for shipping to 1 address. He say's they may have some very minor cosmetic damage but in no way effect functionality.
So, £190 all in for 5 tool's delivered to one UK address, then plus postage this side on to individuals (will have to look into this additionl cost)
The 36mm Socket with 1/2" Drive to release the filter housing's are an additional $10 each, but would be included in the original postage charge from the State's. Obviously it would probably increase postage cost's at this ed onto yourselves.
Is'nt the exchange rate roughly $1.5 to the £ currently??? This would put these tool's at £25.33 each inc shipping from the States (plus postal this side.)
Unless my Math is wrong lol, which it quite possibly could be :signLOL:
What do you think guy's? Obviously could do with another party to take a fifth tool to save my expenditure.
Also, how could/would this work? Never sorted anything like this before, so a little unsure how to take payments from yourselves etc
Also, I suppose price is likely to change a little due to exchange rates, ie, I'm not sure how much a Credit Card Company would charge me in the exchange.
-
List Time!
1. Stokeballoon - drainage tool and socket.

Credit cards usually charge 2.75% conversion on foreign currencies.
You'd also need to factor in import duties payable to HMRC.
Oh, the socket would be better in 3/8" square drive - there must be loads of different UK stockists for these.
Good work though! :happy2:
-
Thanks Sean, never thought of the Banks extra charges etc.
Is the import duty a % of total cost's etc?
It's a mine field aint it :signLOL:
Re the socket drive size, my tool box only consist's of 1/2" Drive stuff, so it would suit me :happy2:

I've no idea on the actual import duty costs. Surely someone on here must know. Although I am aware there are methods of avoiding paying import duty - something along the line of it being a gift, and also if it's below something like £150.
Re the socket drive size, my tool box only consist's of 1/2" Drive stuff, so it would suit me :happy2:
Reason I recommend 3/8 drive is simply that 1/2 in drive torque wrenches don't go low enough - 25Nm. You usually need a smaller 3/8 drive torque wrench to get that low. But if need be, you can get a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter.
-
UK source for a 36mm 1/2" sd dr socket - £10.41 +vat, professional quality (better than Snap-On ), from www.Cromwell.co.uk (46 branches throughout the UK) - catalogue number KEN-582-7150K. Page 1060 of their 2010 catalogue.
-
1. Stokeballoon - drainage tool and socket.
2. CupraR - Drainage Tool and Socket
3. KRL - drainage tool
Will get the socket T_T found.
-
Hang on guy's, price may of changed a bit. Heard back from Fred and he now say's to ship them all in one box would be $55 plus I'd have to pay VAT
BUT I think he may also be able to send for $30 per tool plus $14 Shipping plus $10 per Socket if you require one(they would be marked up as a value of $15, so no VAT on top) each. Also I have asked if he would then send to the individuals address also if each individual could pay him directly. I await a reply.
So, as a rough calculation each tool would work out at approx £30 each inc delivery to your address. Plus a 36mm Socket if you would like one.
As I say, I await a reply with confirmation.
-
So do you mean he will charge you vat or you will have to pay vat when it comes through customs? He cant charge you vat as the US isnt in the EU.
Im fine with the individual shipping. Makes it easier to pay them direct rather than through one of us.
-

No, I mean if he were to send them in one big box, then I would have to pay import tax on top once it arrived.
If he would do it, I think the best way would be each of us pay him directly, then he ships direct to us.
If so, are you all still happy with the price?
We need another one to make up the five.
-
Im happy with the price :happy2:
1. Stokeballoon - drainage tool and socket.
2. CupraR - Drainage Tool and Socket
3. KRL - drainage tool
4. BDMAlex - drainagle tool
-
OK guy's, we are at the final hurdle :signLOL:
Fred will do a Drain Tool including shipping to each individuals address for $44 plus if you want a 36mm Socket, this would just be an additional $10. It will fit in the same envelope and be covered under the same postal charge.
Result eh?
Only problem now is, this is based on five people :sad1: Once he has payment (to his Paypal account of which I have just asked for the details of) he will ship them out. I think it would be just a matter of sending payment with a little note of what it's for along with your postal details.
So, it's approximately £30 for one of these OE (looking) Drain Tool's delivered to your door. Anyone else like to take one to get this off the ground?
Cheers
Rich

If you don't get any joy here Rich perhaps try VAGOC.

Nice one.
Just had a confirmation email of despatch. :happy2:
-
Not seen any dispatch email on my end. Should we all be getting one?

Not sure to be honest mate, I did ask him to let me know when he despatched them, so whether or not it is just me I don't know.
I'll keep you updated though, on the other thing too :happy2:
TBH it's just a link to the USPS, when I clicked on it, no real info come's up as of yet. Like I say though, I'll keep you all updated, might be just waiting on Hendo's payment.
-
Just sent off my payapl money now.
-
Sound's like my tool has arrived today.
Anyone else's landed today?
Edit.
Yep, got mine
Look's very well made, hose spin's in the middle ala OE tool.
May change my oil now at the weekend just to try it :signLOL:
Socket is just hexagon too, so it will give full support to the Plastic Housing.
All in inc delivery I think I was charged £34 for the Drain Tool and 36mm Socket, fair bit cheaper than the OE tool from my dealer :happy2: And should negate hot oil down my arm.
-
Yeah I got mine this morning. Looks really well made. I love the made in china stamp

Haha, yeah that made me chuckle too.
You intend using this in the Workshop Alex or for just DIY use?
-
Right, just got home and opened up the 36mm Socket. It look's like a 3/8" Drive has been supplied, I specifically asked for 1/2".
Now this doesn't bother me as I'll just use an adaptor. But I hope it doesn't give a problem to any other's that got a Socket too? I can only apologise :ashamed:

Mainly workshop. I like having my own personal tools :happy2:
-
Received mine today, looks very well made. Cheers for the GB

Keep us updated Kristan. :happy2:

I'm glad it turned up mate :congrats:
Just Hendo's to turn up now then.
-
Mine arrived ages ago I must have just forgotten to post it up.
-
Glad they all turned up.
Thanks for taking part guy's. :happy2:

Just need the know how and weather to get using it.

Just need the know how and weather to get using it.
I'm sure I have seen a"how to" somewhere, I'll have a search around and try and find it.
More or less though, the filter housing has a cap on it which need's removing, then this Drain Tool can be screwed into the bottom which will lift the valve, allowing the housing oil to be drained out. Then remove Drain Tool and efit cap.
I think :signLOL: Still haven't got round to changing my oil with it yet :ashamed:
-
Yeah I did see a video on it but I'll have the big plastic engine guard thing to wrestle with first and I have no tools at all so that will be fun.
-
Sound's like your Christmas presents request's are sorted then :happy2:
-
Anybody got one they wish to sell me!
In desperate need of one lol
-
GREAT group buy - well done to all - cracking prices. :happy2:
How are you all getting on with them? :pomppomp:
-
Works a treat.
-
I never did get round to getting one in the end....
But, I rang Skoda today and these are £86 including VAT from my local dealership, £15 better than VW, but still a hell of a lot of money for what is essentially a pipe with a ball on the end.
-
maybe we should try another GB i would be in :signLOL:
-
Me too Dawain! :happy2:
If we can make it worthwhile a second time, that would be great?
How much did it end up first time around and how many people were game?
-
it was only for 5 last tym as thats all the seller would do and i think it ended up about £30 per person i think pete
maybe msg this fella regarding a GB price

^ What about this one Dawain? Looks to perform the same function, less compliated and slightly cheaper?

£45 or so delivered inc. conversion - I'm tempted to take the plunge fella? Don't think a second group buy would be that practical through eBay(?).

yeah thats true mate i wonder if he'd do a deal on 2 ??
-
^ I'll send a PM his way and see what the response is like - test the waters. Feedback appears very reliable but less than 300 transactions at the same time, don't know how many of those are posted to the UK?
For £45 it's probably worth a punt though.
I'll PM you once he's replied fella or even forward it on if you bung me your email add :happy2:
