Title: bulbs
Post by: gti265 on October 19, 2010, 10:22:32 pm
hello all i have xenons normal driving lights, but my full beams and side lights look pants when on with them,

i belive the bulb i need is h1 for full beam and 501 for the side light, is that correct??

and also where can i get some nice bright bulbs from,

sorta blue (matching the xenons for the side lights)
and as bright as possible for the full beams

also car is a 56 plate gti 2007 (if this helps)
thanks
tom

The xenons on the MK5 are bi-xenon so the diaphram should open up for full beam giving massive clear light.  I also think you can turn off the standard bulbs and only use them for flash function.  Side light bulbs you can get LED's that will match the colour of the xenon bulb just make sure they have an in-line resistor so they dont throw up a blown bulb warning.

If you are after a standard bulb, however better quality check out PIAA.

i thought bi-xenons where only fitted to r32 as standard?? as mine are definatly just xenons main beam, and full beam is a difrent bulb and a yellowy light?

thanks

no if coded properly you should get both the halogen bulb and the xenon diaphram opening up for main beam, the standard setting also just uses the halogen for daytime flashing rather than turning on the xenon bulb.  are yours standard equipment or a retrofit?

Having just had a look at the kufatec website (and assuming they were retor fitted) then it might be they werent installed with bi-xenon capability.  Do you have auto levellers for them and headlight washing? might be worth checking your PR codes to see what equipment was original factory fit as that will help to narrow down if they were retro fitted.

was just on the awesome site and they seem to be listing H7 in there MK5 section.  Having used to work at Halfords (11 years ago) I wouldnt trust what half of them say!

If you are after a standard bulb, however better quality check out PIAA.

PIAA are overpriced rubbish. Poor geometry, poor life and poor output.

Philips bulbs are the most highly regarded for quality. Try consumabulbs for prices, powerbulbs are too expensive.
