LCDs have restricted viewing angles, whereas LEDs don't.

My findings today guys after all the advice I've been given......Ohhh and after the cock sales man said finished telling me I wanted a 3d tv!!! Some don't listen.

Plasma - looked good, they just have the high glass/shine fronts to protect the screen obiously. but most of these are 600htz

LED - Nice view, good colours, but can't help thinking the price is for the slimness of the units. average 50-100htz unless you pay big £££

LCD - Seemed to be in the middle of the two......100htz average with fairly clean image.

Problem is, as the guy told me, 99% of the screens are running std leads - not HD. so was hard to get a good likeness.

Just Buy a WHAT HIFI magazine and look through if your having problems deciding, worth spending a £5 instead of making an expensive mistake.

All TVs are usually reviewed at the back.

htz < 100htz standard plasma seem to offer full 600htz < will I noice a BIG difference on my HD films?

HD will always look good on a HD TV. The question is does SD look good. It's no good having a TV that will only look good for a small percentage of the time.

The next question will be..........are your eyes 100% up to seeing all the detail these high end TVs offer!!!

Have you had them checked recently cause you will be missing out if not 100%

Sorry couldnt resist.

What about projection units? they do HD ones with a pull down screen, you could mount it outside and turn your house into the ODEON. :P

Hmmmm . . . what hifi mag generally awards 'best buys' etc to the company which has the biggest advertising budget.  Just like the Jaguar XF heap of turd - believe all their hype from all their so-called awards, and you'd think it was better than a Veyron, R8 V10, Zonda etc all combined.  If the Jag can't even fit the two trapezoidal exhausts straight - what hope is there . . . . ?

Alrite - just like their sister publication - What Car. :P

But seriously, virtually all print mags, and all commercial TV is subject to bias when making 'recommendations'.  Did anyone follow last years 'Ramseys Best Restaurant'?  Total biased fix!

If you must go on reviews from mags, try to get them from competeing mags from different publishers - and try to avoid 'Haymarket Publications' - owned by that to$$er Michael Hesseltine!

Easy, look at the phillips LCD range, they offer various sizes but heres a link to the 42":

http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/review/2009/08/05/Philips-42PFL9664-42in-LCD-TV/p1

Nothing comes close in the sub £1500 range. The 47" can be had for around £1100 at the moment.

No they don't!  How can they?  A true impartial test is to submit ALL of their products to ALL of their tests.  They'll often exclude two or three products after just one test - usually sommat stoooopid like the wrong colour!

I'd second that completely.....

We have 3 Panasonic 42" Viera's that are great, picture quality is great on them. We also have a 50" Samsung which is ok, decent enough picture but the sound quality isn't great (all our TV's are amped through to a sound system though so doesn't matter). Our best TV by far is a 50" Pioneer Kuro, amazing picture quality but as mentioned they come with a hefty price tag. Also, i'm pretty sure Pioneer have stopped making TV's now?!

All our TV's are full HD and are all plasma apart from one which is a Panasonic 32" LCD and to be honest, it's not a patch on the plasma ones. When we were buying them, we got told for for watching fast moving programmes (sport e.t.c) then plasma is the way to go. For slower paced TV (documentaries e.t.c) then an LCD is better although anything over 42" should be a Plasma regardless. This was two years ago when we got all our TV's mind.

Matt

interesting that 42" Panny Plasma is cheaper than the 42" LED/LCD i went for instead!

Bit of a bummer tho...mine is 100hz vs 600hz for the plasma!

but why would it be cheaper tho?

The price of slimline tech??

Panny Plasma for that size for me - had 2 and still think they are great.

HD is good and SD is also fine, parents in law have a Panny LCD 32" and although good, HD is great but SD is rubbish compared to mine.

What's best is in the eye of the beholder unfortunately.  Once you get used to the brightness of an lcd or led, plasmas look dull and poor.  I've had 4 lcd's and was sure after trawling through av forums, a panasonic 46" plasma was going to be my next tv.  However, after buying one i just couldn't get used to the dullness of the picture.  When i went back to the shop, the guy said that people just have different views on what looks best.  Once you get used to one thing, that's what you like

Ref LED's, there is actually very little between lcds and leds.  Energy saving and thinness is the main difference.  Samsung cheat a little bit.  All their leds have the ultra clear panel which is basically a shiny clear panel that makes the screen look really black in dark scenes and makes all other tv's look like they have a grey panel blocking/dulling the picture.  If you check out their high end lcds, they have the same ultra clear panel and if anything, the picture looks even better.  The very brightest colours look slighly more natural and crucially you get that ultra clear panel which gives the wow factor.

Look at LG and sony leds, they look no different at all to their normal lcds, some of the lgs incredibly dull.

Ignore all the opinions here and go to your local currys (hopefully a refurbed one with all the nice displays in HD) and decide what looks best in your eyes.

Try to get 100hz, def get 1080p, after that decide what works for you

I would agree with plasma suggestions, the picture is more lifelike, unless you like the overly processed look of the Samsung LEDs, that is.

Oh and don't go thinking that the 600Hz Pannys are 6 times better than a 100Hz screen coz they're not. The 600Hz they refer to is not describing the screen refresh rate and is merely clever marketing on their part. Their TVs are only 100Hz in reality.

Post by: dajonic on October 24, 2010, 05:34:47 pm
Yep Pioneer stopped making plasma TV's as they were one of the few that actually made their own kit rather than buying in a screen from another party and adding their own software to them. They decided it was too expensive and pulled out of the market altogether. Think they passed on some tech to Panasonic but not all.
If you can find a late good Pioneer and can afford it then buy it. Quite simply the best tv's made. As always to get what you pay for and they're not especially slim.
Another important thing to remember when buying is how far away from the screen you'll be sitting and what the majority of content you'll be watching is then buying the accordingly sized screen.

Personally, I'd avoid LG.  Mine isn't very good at all - not particularly great definition, and suffers with a tad of colour bleed, especially in the greys.  But I suppose if your budget is tight, and you need a 50" - then it aint a bad deal.
