Hi all,
I noticed that quite often people post in here for recommended garages, bodyshops, wheel refurbishment etc. I know we have the forum for recommendations but sometimes it can be a bit hard to find somewhere that's local to you. I've therefore created page which shows the location of all the recommended garages on one easy to use map. You can then find somewhere that's near you and click on the icon for a bit more information (including a link to the original forum page so you can see how highly it was recommended).
The map is at:
http://www.suzannemartintutoring.co.uk/golfgti/recommended_garages.html (http://www.suzannemartintutoring.co.uk/golfgti/recommended_garages.html)
If anyone notices any mistakes, just let me know on this thread, and if you have any more garages you want adding then just put them in the recommended garages section in this forum and I'll add them.
You'll also note that I've used the forum logo and style, which is because I suck at graphic design. if the administrators want me to remove this then I'm more than happy to do so.

Add a postcode search in too!
-
Am I missing something.
I have tried the link, comes up with the map, but not one pin is showing, even tried zooming into Manchester and still nothing
So what have I done wrong :scared:
-
it requires you to click on an area, doesnt work as smoothly as the OP has intended, but im sure with either a post code search or some tweeking all will be well.

Good idea, I should be able to implement that.

No it should show all the pushpins by default; you shouldn't need to zoom in (although you can to get a clearer view). The chances are I've made some sort of coding error but can I ask what browser and operating system you are using?
thanks,
Chris

I tried chrome + I.e 32bit+64. On windows 7 + xp
-
the pins don't work for me in chrome, firefox, or IE8 on xp SP3 if I move over the map the cursor changes and I can click to bring up the balloon with the additional information but the pins just don't appear.
Idea is great though especially linking to the recommendation, as this removes the issue of subjective info as you can review the comments made. :happy2:
-
No link balloons here either.
-
My Bad :ashamed:
The links to all the pushpins weren't quite pointing to the right place.
Should be fixed now.

1000x better now lol

Yup works well now............................................................... :notworthy:
-
No recommended garages inside the M25 :surprised:
Looks like I will be going for long drives once I get my GTI
-
thanks all..
I added postcode support so you can type your postcode and it will centre the map and zoom in for you.
Also if anyone wants to recommend me a good garage around Southampton then I'm all ears.....

Once SteveP gets some time to look at this, i am sure we can make it a sticky i the relevant section. :happy2:

Thanks Stealthwolf, I've added to that to the map now.

Went there until last week, been messed around twice by them now, had to struggle to get my car there, only to be told that Jodie had decided not to come in as he was messing with his motorbike for the day instead. Won't give them a third chance.
Go to VW Rescue in Wombourne now, off the Bridgenorth Road.

Central Audi VW are very good for diagnostics and repairs/service.
They are independent specialists and use same equipment as main dealers.

Immensely surprised mate. I emailed them about getting some work done on the car and they booked me in. Turned up, sorted me out. No problems. Quite a few on Golfgti.co.uk rate them too.

Hmmmm . . . great idea, but it isn't working for me.
There are no icons for the keys below the post code search box, no push pins appearing. The map display does not refresh, especially after dragging it out of the current area. I think the Google maps is probably causing the issue - might be worth trying Bing maps. And I think a zoom bar ought to be included.
All the above is when using Windows 7 (which is ) with Firefox 3.6.10.
However, on the same Win7 machine but with IE8 - it's perfect! :happy2:
-
Oh, can I suggest another category - Parts suppliers (for companies like VW Speed, OEMpl.us, Fischer Motorsport, etc)

I just tried Firefox 3.6.10 and Windows XP (don't have 7 here but can try it at home later) and it all seemed fine. Just to check you don't have a javascript blocker (e.g noscript) installed do you? If not then I need to think again.

That is a good idea but do we have somewhere to recommend these people? Also as someone who never buys parts I'm unsure if the location of these companies is important? Do you just order the parts and have them delivered to you or do you have to actually go there?

That went right over my head! :ashamed: I'm a spanner swinger, not a 'puter geek! So how/where/why would I find those settings? Would that be a 'global' setting, say in the control panel, or sommat in FireFox? Help me help you!

Well, maybe open it to discussion - but I personally think it would be useful. Yes, I agree that you may not personally 'visit' their premesis - but I thought the fundamental idea was about sharing recommendations. And reputable supplies of parts are very important to those who do their own spannering. Regarding their actual location on the map, I wouldn't say that should be a barrier (I'm sure the map would scroll to Germany and the US ) - a pinpoint containing their url should suffice. Maybe put in brackets under their key entry (under the postcode search box) that those in this category may be mail order only or internet only.
Discuss.
