Title: Battery drain
Post by: simonp on October 24, 2010, 09:12:02 pm
I'm slowly becoming convinced my battery is being drained by the RCD510 I've fitted. Is there a simple fix I can implement i.e pulling a fuse overnight, until I can sort it properly?

Disable your TIM settings in your RNS.

Also, what spec is your battery?  Early GTIs had a 72Ah battery, which had a CCA of 640 amps.  From 2007 model year, the cheapskates at VWAG fitted a lower spec battery of 70Ah with a 570A CCA - and these latter ones caused numerous issues with flat batts.

According to Simons post he's fitted a RCD510 and he drives an R32 not a GTI.

Ian, you might be able to put my mind at rest. I'm not getting any electrical issues as such, but the car seems to crank over for longer when starting the engine. Could it merely be the colder weather or are you not experiencing this? If yours is doing the same then it might just be a chilly weather thing.

I will make a note tomorrow when I start from cold. I can't think of anything obvious though.

I also didn't think the RCD 510 caused battery drain issues only the RNS 510 above a certain firmware level and only on certain CAN gateway revisions.
Anything on R32OC?

OK smart ar$e!  But the issue of VW 'downsizing' batteries is still valid! :booty:

Not being smart, just stating facts.

If you have a problem with that take it up with the management or come and see me in person.

I have heard that the RCD510 "can" cause battery drain issue but again is firmware dependent.(no idea which firmware revisions cause the problems) However as long as your CAN-Gateway is above a K revision then you should be fine.

By the sounds of what you describe I would suggest it may be the cold weather (although Ian should be able to give a more definitive answer being an R32 owner).

When you say it cranks for longer is it a slow crank as if it is struggling or is it normal but taking longer?

When I got the car in August, it just vroomed into life immediately, but now it's 5 or 6 of whatever that noise a starting car makes before it happens now. It was better today after work, not as bad as this morning when it was -2. Starting to think it might just be the cold, but I do have an error showing on VCDS regarding the CAN gateway and the radio.

What KM's are you on now Simon? That fault might just be from when you changed to the RCD 510. Clear it and see if it comes back. Not sure if it needs any form of coding. Look in 56 - Radio and see what options there are.

Oh and you have a K revision gateway by the way.

Was just going to point out it was a K revision.

As Ian says that fault code is probably from the install.

I don't have a VCDS cable yet, still waiting for NHN to get back to me. dajonic logged my car at JKM for me last week and copied it onto my SD card. I have an AD revision gateway now, which I'm hoping will clear the error for good! (is there a fingers crossed smiley?)

Looking further down the list, there are other faults showing to do with the speaker test. I guess this is because the gateway and radio weren't getting on?

Dammit! Just got my VCDS cable through today and have rescanned the car. No faults!

I spent 80 squid on a new gateway I don't need, by the looks of it! :ashamed: Oh well, wasn't especially looking forward to fitting it!

Anyone need one?

Battery drain doesn't show a fault on the gateway.

Sorry, I know that, I was just worried I was going to experience this due to the faults showing when I had a scan done.

Now the faults have gone and I've already bought a new gateway! Just highlighting my numptiness really!  :ashamed:

I had a think about the slow and longer cranking when cold. Unfortunately Mr Frost has stayed away for me to test properly but I am thinking that it is probably down to the oil temp and the fact the battery will be cold.

As and when Winter starts properly I will make a note but as far as I am concerned if it starts then its a bonus

It is a little better now we're sans frost. I suppose the battery is 3yo now and might be feeling its age a bit?

That in combo with the faults scanned just panicked me a little into thinking something was wrong. Best get this gateway on ebay, I suppose!

Simon, I'd be interested in the gateway if you wanted to get shot of it. Where did it come from and what revision is it?

Simon,

It just so happens that I'm after as I'm planning on replacing my RCD300 with a RCD310. What revision is it?

BTW. I'm a semi regular poster over on uk-mkivs but having recently bought a Mk5 Jetta I expect i'll be over here more.
