Title: Will RNS510 fit a 2007 MK5 2.0 DTi Sport DSG
Post by: rob r on October 26, 2010, 02:43:51 pm
Hi, I'm considering upgrading the head unit in my MK5 to one with sat nav, does anyone know if the RNS510 will be a straght swap apart from adding the GPS antenna? It just has the basic cd hed unit at the moment with the MFSW.

Cheers, Rob

It's a straight swap but you need to have the correct can-bus version installed to avoid the battery drain issue.

No it's part of the car. If you look in the VCDS register, you can ask someone to scan the car and find out which version of the can gateway you have. This can be upgraded at extra cost.

hey,

i had the battery drain issue on a 2006 GTi, after upgrading the RNS510 firmware to version 2600
there are two options availalbe to you.
1. downgrade the unit to version 1200, this will wipe the unit, so make sure you have the map dvd - your dealer might be kind enough to do this for you.
2. upgrade your CAN to a L or higher version CAN
check here for specific details http://www.my-gti.com/1101 (http://www.my-gti.com/1101)

there is another option, and that is to just upgrade the unit and do nothing.
when i initially upgraded my RNS510 to version 2600, i miss read the battery drain issue.
the car started every morning, it wasnt until it sat for two days that it failed to start. not an ideal solution i know, and i am sure it is not good for the life of you battery, but it is an option too.

best of luck with it, its a 30 min job, but completely transforms the car.
there is a VCDS coding you can so as well, its something to do with speaker set-up in your car, i can not recall where i got it, but it may have been on that site above.
its worth doing, it made the sound from the unit much richer.

When was your car registered on the road?

My car was registered in March 2007 and has a version 'K' CAN gateway - anything pre K and you may have to update it. As mentioned if you can find someone with vagcom then they can tell you what version gateway you currently have fitted to your car.

Cheers for the info chaps.

I think mine was registered in March 2007 as well.

Its a bit of a minefield, I've been looking at some of the aftermarket double din head units with sat nav built in but ideally want to keep everything standard although the ones with the USB socket on the front look handy.

Any good places to buy a VW unit one from? some of the ebay prices are a rip off

i replaced my RNS510, GPS died, with an after market unit, if you search ebay for a-sure.

they do a few different models, but it has pretty much anything you could want from a head unit.
