Title: How much would you pay in a raffle to win my car?
Post by: Garth on October 26, 2010, 04:32:09 pm
I've seen this done with houses before and it's a great idea becase someone walks away with a ridiculous bargain....

Let's say if I wanted to sell my car for £7500 minimum. That means if I could sell tickets at £50 each, I would only need to sell 150 to make my minimum, then after 20 days or whatever the agreed period was, I pulled a ticket out of the hat and the winner gets my car. Not bad for £50 I think you'll agree!

Just thinking about it at the moment, but I think that between all my mates and a couple of forums, I could easily get way over 150 sales if I pitched the price right. If I put the price at £10 a ticket, I would need to sell 750 minimum, but then who wouldn't buy one at that price?

So the question is this, what is the maximum you would realistically pay for a ticket? The odds are literally millions of times better than the lottery

I'd have a punt at £10. Wouldn't bother at £50

As above £10 is a punt, I may buy 2 but at £50 I wouldn't bother.

I'd have a go at £10 - pushing it at £20 but not £50.

Just to give you an idea i have entered a competition to win a supercar a couple of times in the airports and they are only £20 a go :happy2:

.
If I really fancied owning your car I'd go to a max of £20 for a ticket. Seriously good idea  :happy2:

But to be very honest frank, if I didn't much like the person whose ticket I pulled out, I'd be very tempted to pull out another ticket. I know! That's not very honest

Which is why it should ideally be done in an independent controlled situation. Otherwise there'd be a lot of biaising.

I'd have a couple but I'd wanna know it wasn't a fix ala RR's post. How would you convince the participants it was kosher lol

I think that one way to protect the raffle ticket buyers from someone like me would be to have the draw witnessed publicly. Of course I would have earlier changed all the tickets to have the same identity of my favoured buyer

As has been said already, if you can give concrete guarantees that the draw is 100% kosher then you may sell enough tickets, but you will need to take into account the associated costs of doing this properly.

maybe the forum can hold the money and do the raffle on his behalf?  i personally think this is a good idea.  any extra cash over his asking price could go to forum running costs

^^ As above - I'm pretty sure you would need a gambling license.  Then (as you are not a charity) you would probably be liable for tax?

has anyone read about that guy that started with a red paper clip and used a trading website and traded up over a year and ended up with a house!

i.e traded a paper clip for a stapler, stapler for a book, book for a small Taiwanese woman, small Taiwanese woman for a car etc..

I think logistically, this isn't going to happen. Not sure about the legal side of things but it would have to be run by a third party to make it appear fair to everyone involved and that in itself would involve expense. It's not a supercar therefore not going to attract the thousands of punters willing to spend a tenner

I was just interested to see what people would pay in this situation. It would have been nice for the car to have gone to a forum member as a prize, would have been nice for this forum too I reckon. It looks like I'll just do things the old fashioned way.... give it a good detailing and advertise on the trader

Sorry to be really dull but i looked at this as a new web business  - similar model just lots of different prizes

the problem I had is that yuo are runing a lottery which is illegal. you have to have a 'game of skill' hence the supercar thing always has a spot the ball or similar - don't ask me how 'spot the ball' is a game of skill tho ;-(

So you would have to fill it with balloons or something and then have people pay a tenner to guess the number of balloons, nearest wins...or have a reverse auction where its £10 to enter and the lowest unique bid wins.

you can get software to run all this FOC so not to hard but you don't want to be charged with running an illegal lottery so be careful!

I entered one of these a few years ago - a bloke was doing the same with his Monaro, which was worth a fair bit of money at the time. He did it all officially with 3rd parties, solicitors etc etc - didn't end up making enough money to cover the car in the end, so (as advertised) it turned into a simple draw for the money that he did managed to raise, so bit of an anti climax really.

No I didn't win :)

Just be VERY VERY careful........!! There are some very very strict rules against this.

I worked for Best of the Best (botb.com (http://botb.com)) for over 5 years. You may all know this better as WIN a supercar from the airports. The rules, implications are massive! I was also invloved in the raffle of the house - which was stopped (legally) and hoem owner fined!!

However, there are VERY clever and simple ways around these laws, since done two raffles for cars. Done well, you can do well from it.
