Title: FITTING GTI SIDESKIRTS
Post by: gujarz786 on October 26, 2010, 09:16:07 pm
Ive recently bought some gti sideskirts to fit my 3 door gt tdi...i bought them off ebay for £99.99 and these arrived without the fitting kit,
does anyone know if i can fit these without the kit or will i need it? how easy are they to fit?

Spoe to a guy at the weekend who did this without he fitting kit. Just put the screw in hue bottom. And the 2/3 in he wheelarches then take off the adhesive backing and hey should fit fine. He has had his on 12 months and not had any problems.

Thought that might help.... You can buy the fitting kit from VW... and i'm sorry to say the skirts are cheaper from VW at approx £26.20 +VAT each!

You got ripped off, as another poster mentioned, retail price is 26+vat each side, trade price much lower.

Dunno about the fitting kit, but make sure that where the self adhesive strip mates to the body work, clean it very meticulously - ideally finish off with alcohol wipes - or a splash of blue label vodka on a white kitchen towel.

I'm keen to fit the gti side skirts to swmbo's GT when it arrives, I have also thought about fitting them to my mk2  Octavia vRS! With that in mind I have started a post over on the Briskoda forum seeking advice.  I have however seen that the gti side skirts should only be approx' £26 + vat each from VW, however one of my fellow Briskodians has just been quoted in excess of 200 quid for the pair from a local VW garage, and another has paid €136 for the pair??????

Can someone help me out here and point me in the right direction for the £26 + vat supplier?!"

Cheers, Lee.

Further update, the Gti skirts primered ready for paint as found on the R32/ed30 are 200+ quid whereas the Gti textured type are £26 + vat! Mental that.........

Surely it would be cheaper to buy Gti textured ones and then get them smoothed??

Hello mate...

I've done a fair bit of research into this and i didn't like the idea of drilling holes in my car...

so i've only bought the skirts and the adapters

1k3853859b9b Skirt @ £26.20 1 needed

1k385386099b Skirt @ £26.20 1 needed

1K0853493 Adaptor @ £2.84 each 4 needed

The skirts have double sided tape along the top so it bonds to the body and there is a screw at each end.

Hope this helps.

^^^^^^^^ That's the exact method I used. Works fine, just make sure you clean the bodywork where the tape sticks really well.

Didn't like the idea of having holes in the sill when I put the car back to standard  :happy2:

Also just heat the body up with a hairdryer as this will enable to tape to stick better!!

1k5853859b9b Skirt @ £26.20 1 needed

1k585386099b Skirt @ £26.20 1 needed

Clean surfaces with fairy and dry. Make sure your positioning is correct and http://www.directcarparts.co.uk/product/277/tignb/u-pol-tiger-seal-adhesive-sealant-310ml-black.html (http://www.directcarparts.co.uk/product/277/tignb/u-pol-tiger-seal-adhesive-sealant-310ml-black.html)

Possibly due to the VAT increase and the fact VW are always changing prices!! discount on body parts is really poor!!! but as for fitting them, ive fitted quite a few sets to non-gti's (inc. my own!!) and used a little run of bonding just below the tape line provided, and they have been on for a year now with no problems!!!! preparation is they key, like anything!!!!

The ones you've just bought are they for a 5 door or a 3 door??
Also is that price for everything or just the side skirts??

Sooooo, the part numbers listed above (for the 5 door skirts) don't seem to work any more.

From the guy I just spoke to at VW the correct part number for one side is:

1K485386b9b9

Also, prices have gone up a fair bit...

£42.13 (side skirts - each side)
£13 - support strips EACH SIDE!!
£4.80 - adapter X4

so all in all, it's actually cheaper to go via ebay....

Just thought I'd update this as I'm about to purchase some for my MK5

I never bothered with the adapters or fitting strips. Screwed in at each end and bonded on!

awesome, that sounds easier!

Silly question, screw as in, directly into the body work?
