With xenons the sidelight should be below the dipped beam (the xenon bulb). It should be pale yellow, on the normal headlights the side light is next to the main beam.

A bit difficult to see your signature properly gti265, but your car doesn't look like it has xenons. Any particular reason you think they do?

Agreed - those in that sig pic are definately NOT xenons, just halogens.

Maybe someone told him it had some aftermarket H7s which had xenon gas in them? :sad1:

Do you mean where are the sidelight bulbs in the engine bay?
They are behind the smaller rubber protective cover and they point away from the engine to the wing, so you have to pull them sideways to remove the bulb holder.

have you got any recent pics of your car mate?  because as said above the car in your sig pic doesnt have factory xenons so maybe you have an aftermarket kit?

The headlamp washers could be part of the winter pack, and the halogens could then be fitted with HID kits.

Or you had xenons and the guy you bought the car off sold them, fitted the HID kit and made a bundle.

Either way, you don't have OEM xenons which is why your sidelights aren't bars next to the indicators.

Genius of an idea. When I come to trade in and the dealer takes the piss on value....

Nah I prolly won't.

As above you don't have factory lamps now, but to see if you did originally check the option codes in the service book. There is a reference in this site somewhere to help you decipher the codes.

gti265, both in the boot (under the carpet) and in the manual (where the predelivery inspection stamp is), there is a sticker with a series of codes. Use the website below to decode them.

clicky (http://igorweb.org/equidec/Default.aspx)

It will tell you what options the car came with so you can compare. As stated before, it doesn't look like you have OEM Xenon headlamps but this will tell you whether the car was originally fitted with them or whether someone has tampered or modified the car in any way.

True but if you didn't know, then it's likey your insurance company doesn't know either, which can invalidate your insurance at the very least!

As others have said, the headlamp washers can be part of a winter pack with standard halogens (which is definately what your sig pic shows).

And again, as others have said, you probably have an illegal retro-fit HID kit - not only will these invalidate your insurance, but also make your car unroadworthy due to it no longer meeting the EU Type Approval.  (Bible studies over  )

But what confuses me - how do you know you have 'auto levelers'?

Even IF you declare a HID kit - it will still invalidate your insurance.

Hids aren't Kitemarked or something like that ie they aren't approved. If you go on to the HIDS4U website, they tell you why they're for show use only.

You need to disable and/or remove the HID ballasts - unless you can get hold of some 85volt H7s! :P  Unfortunately, when fitting these HID kits (usually cheap crap from China), the wiring on the back of the headlamp is often barstewardsised.  I just hope they didn't ruin the actual headlamp housings too.

Kitemark is old-skool British Standard Institue rating - no longer relevent on cars.  European 'Type Approval' is where its at - hence either an 'e' or 'E' marking. :happy2:

And even IF the HID kit is E approved, fitting them will still invalidate the cars Type Approval. :stupid:

If you go on to the HIDS4U website, they tell you why they're for show use only.
Probably in some small miniscule print!

Even if you fitted the auto levelers, yours would still be illegal.  The DfT have published info on their website - basically, your specific problem is that HID capsules have been fitted into a headlamp unit specifically designed for halogen headlamps - the focal length is different - and the DfT specifically prohibits this practice.

If you must have HIDs - then the ONLY legal way is to get some genuine OEM xenon headlamps, a new switch on the dash (you have to remove the manual leveling control), and fit the full auto leveling.  You can get specialist controller leads and controllers from Kaufatec <sp?>, but the real cost is the genuine OEM headlamps.
