So have have managed to connect and use VCDS which is a good start these are the details for my CAN gateway..
Do i need to upgrade this to use my RNS 510 without battery drain issue?

Hiya ILT,
Yep looks like you will need to replace your Can Gateway. From what i understand anything pre Revision L will cause the battery drain of death if left for more than 36-48 hours.
-
If you want to use un modified firmware then yes you will need to as anything below K revision will suffer battery drain.
However you can save yourself £85 and just use a modified firmware that stops the Drain :happy2:
-
Ok where can i obtain the modified firmware? :happy2:
-
I need to know what firmware you are running on it at the moment.
No point linking you to an older firmware than you already got
-
Depends on who you've bought the unit from.
Installing the rns510 is theoretically easy. The hard bit is pulling the dash apart with enough force to separate everything but not so much that you break things. I found trim removal tools helpful in this respect.
If someone's already upgraded the firmware, then you'll need to ensure that the secret menu is enabled. In this menu is the option to downgrade firmware.

Tell me more about the firmware, checked my gateway last night, it's a revision 'H' so will need upgrading unless theres another way?!
-
Do i need to power the unit up to find out the firmware or is it printed on the unit?
Also can anyone recommend some decent trim removal tools?
Thanks for the help guys... :happy2:

Hi...
Ive read this thread with much interest.
Just had an RNS 510 (I think its a B version) fitted into my Golf GTD 140 DSG, '06, but an '07 model.
All works well except the battery drain issue. I remove a fuse to stop this.
Does anyone know if changing the firmware will cure the problem ?
If it does, which version of firmware I should install ?
Ive read conflicting posts on other sites/threads as to which firmware version fixes battery drain on B version RNS 510's.
Id rather not have to spend cash on a CAN bus gateway.
VRS CARL "If you want to use un modified firmware then yes you will need to as anything below K revision will suffer battery drain.

Can you let me know where I can download modified firmware from please Carl ? I bought mine from Darren, AKA mortygttdi.
All advice/links welcome :)
TIA,
Mark.

Sorry for the late reply.
This is the firmware link that is modified to stop battery drain
2720 No battery Drain (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3A8Y62MC)
I have no experience of this firmware personally but know of people who are running it and have no problems. What has been done is the VUCI file from firmware 1200 (the last before Battery drain problems arose) and has replaced the one from 2720. I can't guarantee it solves the problem but for a lot of people apparently it has. If it doesn't you haven't lost anything and if it does then bonus :happy2:

Hi Carl...
Thanks for your quick reply.
I'll try the modified firmware and see it it works.
BTW, should I burn this to a CD or DVD ...?
.... and, I assume I will need to reload the navigation maps ? Any idea where I can get those ?
Thanks again,
Mark :)

Burn the image to CD
No you shouldn't need to reload maps as it is not a factory firmware. Once you have burnt the disc follow this process to upgrade:
1. DO NOT PUT KEY IN IGNITION
2. Power up the RNS-510 without key in ignition then eject any CD or DVD in the RNS-510 insert your Firmware CD
3. Unit will restart and after a couple of minutes it will ask you to press OK then wait a couple more minutes and you will get another OK to press.
4. Leave the update to run for 50 minutes and once it’s done eject the CD and restart the unit by pressing <, > and i

Hello Carl,
Do I press "<, > and i " all at the same time, or in sequence ?
I owe you a beer :)
Mark.

Hi Mark
Yes press them all at the same time and hold them in till you see the VW splash screen.
I'll take a diet coke as i don't drink :happy2: :drinking:

It's the RNS' version of Ctrl-Alt-Del, so all three at once. Doesn't matter if you hold the left two buttons with your left hand while you reach for the right hand button with your right hand!

Guys,
I'm running the 1300 series firmware on my B version RNS. Had it on now for about 3 months and even went on holiday during that time and left the car parked up for 10 days. Started on the very first crank on my return, so I don't think this one is showing any battery drain issues?
The 1300 gives me the SDHC support for cards bigger than 2gb ( currently have an 8gb card in the unit), display of road speed limits, option to display the clock during use and when the unit is switched off and a few minor cosmetic tweaks.
Will the firmware thar Carl mentioned offer me any other advantages, or should I just stick with what I have ?
BTW, the car is a 2005 with a rev "E" Can gateway, so pretty old !
-
The only thing 2720 will give over 1300 is voice control. Which unless you have OEM Bluetooth it's not worth it.
Everything else is the same :happy2:
-
Cheers Carl, much appreciated :happy2:

Hello again...
I done the modified firmware 2720 upgrade this afternoon, and the head unit's screen told me all went well, accept, just reading this thread again, I forgot to "eject the CD and restart the unit by pressing <, > and i " - I just turned it on normally... ooops !
I didn't need to reload the maps, but more of that in a sec.
The head unit still makes a very audible whirring noise after the engine is switched off and the ignition key is removed, but after ten minutes or so that noise stops and there is a very very faint whining... it's almost inaudible - any idea if this means the firmware update loaded OK and has fixed my battery drain... or should I do it again and "eject the CD and restart the unit by pressing <, > and i" ?
(I've removed the fuse again just in case) .
I got my RNS 510 from Darren on this forum. He also supplied a maps disc (DVD?) with speed cameras.
I've driven past a few speed cameras at below the speed limit but the head unit didn't warn me about them, so I presume the maps/speed camera disc hasn't been loaded before I received the head unit.
I tried to load it. I put the disc in, a message came up saying something like the maps DVD is loading, and then no more messages or apparent activity from the DVD !
Can some one please let me know how I load the new maps & speed camera disc. An idiots guide would be appreciated.
BTW, the secret menu is not activated, in case that makes a difference.
All advice welcome.
TIA,
Mark.

Your firmware has upgraded fine
The RNS can't warn you of speed cameras apart from visually. Then it's only if the disc has been modified.
When you put the Map disc in after it has warned you that it is a map disc if you then press eject and it just ejects it means you already have the same maps on the unit. You would also get a prompt asking if you want to save the maps to HDD or just Nav from the disc. If the maps are upgrading when you press eject you get a status bar :happy2:

That's normal. The RNS gets very hot during operation so the fan stays on for a few minutes afterwards.
