If your speaking to Darren then you have the expert on the case, but 2007 clocks would have the immobiliser that needs more than VCDS to code so would probably be a shark job or VW unless Darren has found a way round...

Hi Al, try and get the part number mate, if it ends 972 or 973 Darren can do it / Someone with Vag Commander, however if it ends 974 or 975 it needs Shark performance or dealer to do it I believe.

Unless you have the SKC with the clocks? VCDS can do the swap and mileage if you have the SKC, its just a problem if you don't have it, You then have to use VAG commander to retrieve these and change the mileage.

Al

A mate of mine has had a complete nightmare with this exact retro-fit!!! :surprised:

He booked his 05 Plate GTI into a VW Main Dealer for a Longlife Service & Cluster swap. The dealer asked what the cluster was from, (2007 Mk5 R32) and they said it wouldn't be a problem, (20-30 mins for fitting and coding apparently)?......... :drinking:

3 Days later, he has finally got his car back and Vw couldn't complete the job.

Day 1.
All was going well until they tried to code the cluster and at first were having problems with the mileage change, but that soon changed to a multitude of issues. Apparently the cluster wouldn't allow VAG Commander to remove all of the old coding from the original car, (R32) and caused communication issues with the convienience module.

Day 2
VAG Technical were sent e-mails for a "Wipe Code" for the R32 cluster, so in effect the unit would be like an off the shelf job. VAG Tech in Germany then became involved, and were working on the car remotely trying to solve the coding issues as there were still comms issues. End of day 2, VAG Tech couldn't get the R32 clocks to code up properly so advised Vw UK Agent to re-install the original cluster. This then opened up another series of problems, as the old clocks then started to refuse coding work. Aparently he was told that it appeared that the old clocks now had 2 sets of info, part from the R32 clocks and part from his car. At 18:15hrs the engineer had told my friend that he was going to download some info onto his USB stick to take home and see if he could work out what was going on :surprised: :surprised:

Day 3
10:30hrs, receives a phone call from Vw Dealer stating that the car was still causing problems and that they still couldn't even get the thing started??? They eventually phoned and confirmed that they managed to re-install the old cluster and got the car back to its original convienience settings!!!! :ashamed: :stupid:

Now..... I'm not 100% perecent sure if this was VW just playing silly games or that they genuinely couldn't do the job, but to say that my friend is annoyed is an understatement. Especially when they charged him for a portion of the labour and didn't discount the Service :fighting:

He still has the R32 cluster and i've told him that i'm convinced that they would work on his car, but he's not so sure??

This was something that I was also considering but this has made me a little worried :scared:

Any advice guys?

If Al goes for the 972 cluster in the link i sent then he will have no problems at all.

He could use a cluster ending in 970 or 971 but a 972 is much better because it works with the newer and more readily available mfsw.

SOME VW dealerships are useless and I seems to me some people on this and other forums seem to be able to do things they dont or cant do!!!

They told a mate of mine he needed a new airbag to fit a mk5 mfsw! rubbish! I fitted it no problem.

And my local tech at the dealership nearly dropped down dead when he saw the mk6 mfsw in mine when i took it for  a service   :rolleye:

I am still pondering over ordering that kit from the US, as I know that I will get caught for £50 worth of customs fees, and the seller said he won't 'help me out' with the invoice (which I can't really blame him for)
Speaking to Darren, and as he may be round this way in a couple of weeks, would like to get this sorted and put in as I have a MFSW but at present can only change the volume of the stereo with it!

Thats the chance you take with custom fees mate. Iv never been stung but you never know. It all depends how bad you want the highline at $100 dollars + $31.50 for delivery thats about £65 + customs if your unlucky.

Youll be very lucky to get a gti highline cheaper here or on ebayde but thats your choice to make.

The one you linked is $200 mate, not $100. But still a pretty cheap console really(though not as cheap as if it had been factory, seems like the only optional extra that is more now than on fitting new.

Yeah sorry Al your right I looked at a few the other day and got confused!  :rolleye:

It took me 3 months of constant checking ebayde, ebaycom, ebayuk and breakers EVERDAY! before I found my first highline! I paid 200 euro for it and when it arrived it didnt work! Since then I have bought 3 more all ranging from £20 to £200! Mines for a diesel not a gti by the way.

Youll find one on easiest on ebayde but youve just gotta expect to pay between 200-300 euros
Youll get one cheaper on ebaycom but youve just gotta risk customs and if they will actually ship to the U.K. I got one one there for $10 + $30 shipping and no customs charges.

Phoning round all the breakers yards is hit and miss because if they dont know what there selling then you could pick one up for £20 but if they do know then they will want probably £100+

But saying all that you might be lucky and find one with no bids, listed badly and snap it up for 99p like a mate of mine did!!Luck of the draw mate! 260683783664 try this item number out on ebay, have to ask if theyll ship to the U.K though.

It could all get quite expensive I am sure Shark quoted me £420 for new VW parts and fitted/coded!

Is it worth the hassle.

Save for a couple of months more and pay the extra for piece of mind.

Buying the correct part and doing the research is key

Thing is Hurdy it takes 10 minutes to fit and code the new cluster so if you get one for £50 - £100 then your quids in!!

I know its not a new part but thats the chance you take when you buy anything 2nd hand, and yes I have been caught out but I have still ended up paying far less than £420.

To be honest Id never pay £420 for a highline is just not worth that IMO
