These are a 'get you home' product matey, not an alternative to a winter tyre.  Have a look at the 'Driving with Autosock' page.

I was tempted by some of these when I had my ice pig mr2 just to get me to the main road from my old house. Think they would turn out to be a bit of a rash novelty purchase though mate. I'm hoping that the golf is going to be a lot better when we have snow than the roadster!  :driver:

I know a few people who have used them and they work brilliantly, but they only a short term fix - to get you out of a spot of bother.  That said a woman at my work used them for a week solid in and out of work ...

:signLOL: wish I could afford one  :sad1:

I guess they can't replace winter tyres but should be good for the snow. After all, perfomace tyres work quite well in the wet nowadays.

spending most winters in the alps i have come across these before .these are an allternative to snow chains and so can only used on snow,  once you hit a cleared road they need to come off. Also they will have a max speed probably about 50mph.dedicated snow tyres have amazing grip when the roads are wet or snowy but on cleared roads wear quickly and make lots of noise.winter tyres are a good compromise for our winters  .these tyres will have a compound which stays softer at very low temps and a tread pattern which squeeses the snow when the weight of the car rolls over it.this months autoexpress has a winter tyre test.

We have them at work and I'd just like to say what others have said - they are NOT for driving on the road, they are just to get you out of the snow.  As soon as your wheels are on tarmac they have to come off otherwise they will get ripped to shreds.

....Just like chains then.

Following the horrors of last Winter my solution is simply not to take the car out at all in the snow.

It's ok for you retired folk who don't have to go to work   I had a 90 degree spin in the snow last year down a lane that I didn't really need to go down and had to be pushed out by a farmer type bloke because I couldn't get enough traction to get myself out of it :ashamed:

ideally you need skinner wheels ant tyres on to cut throught the snow and also the tyre pressure can be a bit lower to give more tyre contact and grip
