Post by: eyebrows on November 03, 2010, 06:38:49 pm
Hi all

I don't own a MK5 at the minute but i'm seriously considering getting one. Its mainly for the misses to drive  :scared: Any advice on spec or gearbox type greatfully received :happy2:

At the moment we have 2 cars. One which she uses for work but is our daily drive and the other which is mine and only used by me  :driver:

You will probably laugh at them both but definatly at the first one

 Shows what i know! I was thinking about a manual as it would be less likely to go wrong  :notworthy:

I have had the MK3 for nearly 7 years its on 142k now 60k in my/our hands. The o/e box went at 105k replaced with a recon box which lasted 12months and 2 weeks  :sad1: Now on the second recon box but this one has lasted 2 years so far :happy2: Which is why i'm more worried about the box than anything.

Hi Paul,

DSG isn't especially more likely to go wrong than any other component on a car. It's down to personal preference if you like DSG or not but it does offer the best of both worlds because you can drive and think just as in a conventional manual but slip into D-mode (auto) for traffic queues and urban, or do whatever you feel like at the time.

It's not really fair to assume that just because your partner is female that she's not an enthusiastic driver and therefore would only want an 'auto' gearbox - You haven't told us her preferences yet.

:happy2:

Go testdrive a DSG car, Select Manual mode, and put it on a good B road, and see if you like it using the Paddles on the steering wheel

DSG all day long for me. Wont ever go back to a stick shifter whilst owning a VW

Hi and welcome.

As above, try out both manual and DSG cars to get a feel. I never had the opportunity but imagine I'd have gone for DSG in retrospect.

.... x2  - Definitely try before you buy.

I reckon you'd have gone for DSG too, Jas [or is it Jaz?]. Just the fact that your open-minded about DSG suggests you'd get on with it. Most of those who don't like it start off thinking of it from what they know of old-fashioned automatic and also that not fart-arsing around with a foot operated clutch and your wrist is somehow not manly. The result is that they don't give DSG a good chance - It offers many options and you need at least 1,000 miles to become naturally fluid.

Mentioning no names, and I used to be one of them, but I don't understand DSG drivers who only ever use 'auto' D-mode (though I did often use S-mode as well).

I like DSG/S-tronic so much that I simply wouldn't ever consider owning another car that didn't have it or its equivalent. Thank goodness Ferrari's now have such a system!

I found out about DSG from the other forum. I remember a few people had DSG and some of the (?Japanese) videos about the launch control feature appealed to me. But then I clicked on a link. That link took me to an American website where there were problems with the DSG on a car that was going to cost £££ to sort out. It put me off entirely and hence when looking at buying a GTI, I went for manual.
