Hi,
I have got my RNS510 ready to install but i am still waiting for my new CAN gateway.
Shall i still install the RNS and risk the battery drain issue prior to installing the new gateway or wait?
Also i have a CD changer in the car at the moment, do i remove this or leave it in?
Any help or advice welcome... :happy2:
-
CD Changer won't do you any harm.
RNS510 - Hmm, the choice is yours.
-
Hi guys hope someone can help...
I am trying to install my rns 510 and i am stuck already, there are two connectors on the back of my old unit one white one cream. Which i assume are ariel conections but i carnt release them?? Anyone know how to get them off? :stupid: :stupid:
-
There's a little tab on the underside of the connector. You need to push this in and the aerial connectors will slide off.

I can't help you with the install, what I would say is that when my replacement gateway arrives from 'simonp' I will fit and code that prior to fitting my upgraded HU, only just fitted a new battery so I'd rather avoid knackering it by risking a drain!
-
Just thought i'd ask if you've bought the Fakra cable required to fit the RNS? If you don't have it you'll need one as the conections are different from the RCD300 etc
Hopefully you have mate, as for the connectors, i thinks there is a release tab at the back of the connector?
I'll have a look later as i'm swapping mine over :happy2:
-
Thanks guys, they still wont come off but need to do some work now... Will try again later!!
I havent purchased any connectors yet so that looks like another bit i have missed! Learning curve here i come :signLOL: :signLOL:

This is the part you need. Some look a little different but do the same job. Basically it takes the 2 connectors from the earlier radio and gives you 2 new connectors that allow them to be mounted nearer together as is required for the RNS.
I've heard that some people just remove the plastic around the standard connectors (the white and beige) and just then plug the bare connectors in.

^^^I bought that and still had problems so I just took off the pastic connectors. If you've managed to do everything else (eg take dash apart, disconnect old HU etc), then taking off the connectors shouldn't be at all difficult.

Shouldnt be hard but i have a habbit of making the easy seem difficult :signLOL: :signLOL:
Thanks for all the tips guys..

OK RCD is now out...
If i want to try it without the connectors how do you get the wires connected to the RNS510?
Sorry if i am asking dumbass questions btw steep learning curve!! :signLOL:
-
The metal connectors on the antenna will plug directly into their sockets on the back of the unit.

:happy2: :happy2: :happy2:
It works connected everything and the unit fires up fine so at least i havent got a dud :signLOL: :signLOL:
Tested everthing except the nav as the car is in the garage, the only issue i can see at the moment is that the sound quality from the CD changer is a bit off?
-
I can't remember the exact wires, but two wires need to be swapped over. Will try to look it up. Failing that, have a look at my-gti.
EDIT: My Gti is down. Try this: clicky (http://www.r32oc.com/tutorials-guides/18955-rns-510-mfd-install-how-guide-inc-pin-swap.html) - step 12 - move the wire in pin 2 to 3.

I owe you some beer tokens steath!! The pin change over worked a treat..
Currently updating firmware to the 'battery drain fixed version'... So may not even need to change the can gateway.. :happy2:
Thanks again for all the help.

I prefer sweeties! :popcornsoda:
I remember trying to do the pin mod and it was a complete PITA because I didn't have the right tools at hand to get the pin lock undone.
-
To be honest had a tiny screwdriver got it off easy, the ariel clips were the hardest for me...
Would you still recommend updating the CAN gateway even if the modded firmware works?
-
Why? The only reason people seem to be updating the canbus is for the RNS510. If the new firmware has full postcode entry, then I would upgrade both canbus and firmware. But it'd have to be something big or important enough to upgrade IMO.
You could always just save up for it at a later date too.
-
Yeap i agree the new firmware has gone on OK and just tested the sat nav which works a treat...
Will leave it overnight to check the battery doesnt drain if not all is good and will put my dash back together :signLOL: :signLOL:
Thanks again for the help...
