Title: Porshe 911 Turbo- Detailed
Post by: 08micsta on February 15, 2009, 06:23:49 pm
Hello guys

Today I have the privelage to post up the detail of an amazing piece of machinary.

Last week I detailed a Porsche 911 Turbo. Some basic info:

0-100 in 3.4 seconds (Fastest Porsche ever)
Colour: Reflex Silver
Model: 2001
Owner: Daddy

My dad had the car for about a month before I got home from my holiday away and begged me to give it some love. I obliged and the detail started early in the morning.

I started off with degreasing the wheels using a product called prepsol cleaner. Rather gay in pink and rose scented but worked well. Arches were degreased and so were the door hinges and rubber seals etc.

I then foamed the car down and allowed it to soak for a while. Car was then jetwashed and dried using a microfibre cloth.
I then attacked the paintwork that was in rather good condition with minimal swirlies even under the halogens.

I used Meguirs NXT Polish.
Waxed with Bilt Hamber Auto Balm.
Tyres Sealed with Tyre Sealant (No sh*t Sherlock)
All the arches were sprayed with a product we stock that moisturises the plastic and deep treats it.
Windows waxed with Bilt Hamber.

All this was done by hand as my dad didnt want me using the orbital on the car...

The interior was then deep cleaned.

Leather treated.
Plastics deep treated.
Carpets foamed down and vacuumed.

Note to self: Next time send the brother in the back to clean the glass... I can get in but getting out is a different story...

The interior then had a odor killer go off for ten minutes to clean out the filters and seats etc.

Eight hours later my dad arrived home and found this on his driveway:

And the car now very comfortable next to the GTi.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fx255%2F08micsta%2FDSCF3701.jpg&hash=a088233f2743a57428d894b92ca3a6b309094d94)

My thoughts on the car:

This is a tough one as I have always felt that the GTi was blistering fast... But after experiencing this I must say the GTi feels a tad slower now. Dont get me wrong the GTi still chucks but this is a whole new league of badness. I love it.

Overtake 6 cars in a row on a up hill. Its crazy fast and in the corners the G's are so hectic. It just sticks and sticks.... In the controversial words of Jeremy Clarkson (Albeit altered):

Accelerate, accelerate turn turn drive over a M5 accelerate accelerate kill a Audi RS4....

Or in the words of my father:

With this car all you do is point and squirt an if required try not to giggle too much.

The car is also very technical. It needs to be put on charge or the battery goes flat within 3 days. It needs to have the exact amount of oil and if you dont put a seatbelt on the entire dash wont work....

I completely love the technical aspects of the car... The technology is steps ahead of most cars of its time and the whole Porsche vibe is amazing with people waving and how every Porsche driver knows the other.

In general. I love it.

Hope you guys found this interesting and informative.

Mike

Slightly optimistic regarding the 0-100 figure, but nevertheless a lovely car and a good detail.

Thanks guys

Yes the 0-100 is in km. And its a v6 twin turbo.

The 0-100 claim is no lie. Wiki says 3.9 and Porsche snd the official Porsche books say 3.4. So call it 3.7 or so.
Either way its incredible fast....

And yup.. Dads new car. He has wante one for ages now an finally gave in

Thanks guys

Mike

erm..... 0-60-3.4  fastest porsche ever?? thats the older 996 turbo, the 997 turbo is significantly quicker,

it will have 420hp and do 0-60 in 3.9 secs  oh and is 4wd  :happy2:

Check out the ratings...

The 996 911 turbo is the fastest. For its size and engine capacity. The Porsche GT does it in the same time but has a V10. Wheres the fun in that?  :signLOL:

And yes.... Flat six as just correctly by dad here too... I keep thinking V6.......

http://www.porsche.com/international/models/911/911-turbo/featuresandspecs/

And the newer one is no faster.....

What I am saying is that for a car that came out in 2000 it was way ahead of anything else produced. ANd that Porsche simply have not created anything faster yet.

The 3.4 was from a trackday the Porsche guys did here in Cape Town. They did 0-100 sprints with the cars...

Screenshot of the 996 Turbo brochure that I happen to have sitting next to me...

Although as you say, in reality and in certain conditions cars can be quicker than the manufacturer claims.

That is for the coupe... Turbo and Coupe are very different things...

Here is the Turbo in 996 guise:

http://porsche.jbcarpages.com/911/2003/index4.php

And like with Hurdy some people can get a quicker 0-100 time. The driver that managed the 3.4 (He did it more than once) was the head of servicing at Porsche Centre. He has worked with Porche since he left school and he sure as hell knows how to drive a Porsche...

Perhaps there is a difference?

Check your source... I have a 911 Turbo Pamphlet here that quotes the exact same thing as this. The Coupe which is without a turbo is as you posted above.

http://www.leftlanenews.com/porsche-911-turbo-coupe.html

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/porsche/1998-2005-porsche-turbo-996-ar1254.html

Now for the coupe. The coupe you refer to is the C4. It is non turbo'ed.

http://www.supercars.net/garages/marcusmv3/57v2.html

http://porsche.jbcarpages.com/911/2000/index3.php

The newer C4 was faster and introduced in 2003:

http://porsche.jbcarpages.com/911/2003/index4.php

Starting to make sense? Coupe- Turbo not the same thing

That pamphlet is messed up then....

Cos it state the wrong figures... Give Porsche a call. Maybe its a misprint :happy2:

My pamhlet that looks different to yours says 3.9.

Mike

Could well be a misprint then...

All figures I quote are for the facelifted vehicles, and from official Porsche publications - not the cr@p that appears all over the internet.

I have the Carrera in 4.9, the C4S in 5.1 (both Coupe)

Therefore the Turbo in 4.2 makes sense considering its modifications over a normal Carrera.

At the end of the day, this thread was for your efforts on your detailing so lets just stick to that. As I said before, your detail looks very impressive  :happy2:

Not a prob mate. Dads shot through to Porsche now to get the electronics reset so he will find out there what the deal is. Thanks for the kind words though.

Perhaps it feels faster? But on paper they are the same car?? Maybe the 997 is lighter or something. I dont really care. All I know is the 996, 997 and GT will beat most things on the road. Its quite cool knowing that  8)

In a straight line there is nothing in it from a roll, but from a standing start the Porsche would destroy the Golf lol..

Around a track im really not sure, I think it would be pretty close to be honest! Most of which would be down to the tyres on my car..

I know its not really a great comparison, but a standard GTI beats a new WRX around a track, I think that says alot for the Golfs handling abilities, out of the box.

but the old wrx beats a new one round the track, i think subaru have taken a large step backwrds, not only in performance, but looks aswell.

997 turbo is up around 50bhp on the 996 turbo but if they book the same performance figures maybe the 996 is lighter?
I love all the porsche turbos, if i had that sort of money to spend on a car i would buy an f430 8)
Joe your dad had a 430 before the turbo didnt he?

Thats a fair point...

Power is up but is the performance better? Its like a GT. Its got a V10 but still gets the sme 0-100 as the turbo...Why bother??

Also one thing I have learnt... Never trust the porsche guys... They are very much in love with their cars and when u argue with them (Esp about power etc) they get rather heated... My dad said he almost started a war at Porsche tody showing them this post :signLOL:

JohnnyC Im assuming you race cars?

Yes, but I assure you even my mother could be faster in a straight line in the Golf than a 996 turbo..  (just winding it up) haha..

Couldn't agree more.. If they put that engine in a MK6 Golf then mine would be up for sale the same day! I think that engine is going to be awesome for tuning, but in a TT body.. No thanks!

That layout would tempt me out of mine in a second. Tuning possibilities would be awesome, straight 3" pipes to go with various other mods and it would be perfect
