Title: Remap Poll
Post by: broke. on February 16, 2009, 10:27:30 am
After a few problems and let downs with trying to buy a set of wheels for my gti i'm going to spend the money elsewhere, on the engine

I understand that remaps are for different people, some are better suited for different peoples driving needs.

I currently have a full milltek (non-res) and will be fitting a new intake, again. not sure which one yet as some have mixed reviews (neuspeed)

Thanks, Tom

christ, awesome price:power ratio there mate. top work. spoke to a few people who've got quality maps for £350. any idea on which intake is best?

BEST....im not sure, i just use the carbonio with piperX, it depends on how much you wish to spend really. i think alot of people on here rate the EVOMS one quite highly.

how much did the carbonio set you back joe? i've found a quality looking filter for £189, but its performance i'm not too sure on.

The carbonio is not really worth the money IMO. I had one and it did not make a whole lot of difference, as Joe says many people rate the EVOMS. It givesslightly improved BHP and torque figures and it sounds brilliant

Ive had the carbonio on my MK4 and i was a match made in heaven, no experience of it on the MK5 though, i have an EVOMS on my MK5 - superb bit of kit!

My mk4 .:R had a custom code map, although when i get the mk5 mapped i think i am going to be taking the APR route

We might have a bit of an offer for an intake coming up in the next week or so (mainly for K04 cars but believe we will be able to get a K03 version inlcuded as well).

When i did look into getting a remap , i decided on Revo, as there software was adjusted for UK car from what i gathered and alos their customer service/help was very good + you can get the REvo select switch .

I also liked the idea of the Bluefin , ie you could add and remove the map at will also it performed just as good as the others if you look at Greennouses graphs and power.

Go with Revo you won't be dissapointed !

....

Revo for me - Their agents JKM are excellent and Revo HQ give excellent support, plus my VW dealer now has a Revo guy (my doing).

However, as I now have a great working relationship and trust with VWRacing/RacingLine I would consider a custom Superchips via VWR if I was remapping again. Not keen on Bluefin though, especially as I use Macs not Windoze 'puters.

my ed 30 is my third car to get stage 1 custom code and i have never had a problem , if you plan to leave the car pretty much alone after the map i think power for pound here is fantastic , if you want to carry opn tuning upgrade to stage 2  :happy2:

GIAC for me.
Cant believe its not on the main list just as good if not better than Revo.
Title: Re: Remap Poll
Post by: RedRobin on February 17, 2009, 10:12:10 pm
....

I think that GIAC isn't as popular because it's thought of as American based and also not so broadly supported in the UK. I'm not saying it's no good but just suggesting possible reasons.

Personally, I wouldn't buy it no matter how good the map is simply because I don't rate Regal's customer service. But that's just me.

I think JonnyC had GIAC but now has Revo.

Am I missing something here???  :signIWS:

Suppose we put "customer service and experience" aside for a moment. Pretty much all reputable remapping outfits offer warranties to cover damage to the vehicle if directly attributable to the remap, and free re-flash if the remap was removed by the dealership.

Aren't all the remap profiles pretty much the same?  I suspect there are only 2 or 3 parameters that can be tweaked to improve bhp and torque - the clever work is actually done by the software in the diagnostics machine attached to the rolling road?

.... x2

The agents increasingly don't offer it free but make a fixed charge.

So, what's the bhp and torque offered (stage 1) by each of the providers?

....Whatever any of them tell you it's not accurate. I'm not saying they're telling lies but only that numbers vary from car to car and all according to which other mods are onboard. Beware of any tuner who tries to lure you with big numbers.

What you should seek (IMO) is smooth driveability which doesn't over stress any components including your tyres! Best to go to a true VAG specialist and certainly not Jap (very different cars). Aftersales custumer service and support is also extremely important (IMO).

HTH :happy2:

Post by: broke. on February 23, 2009, 01:55:06 pm
i can appreciate how it is the software that does the work. totally correct. however, customer service and aftersale care are vitally important to me. I work (fairly) hard for my money, if i go somewhere and the customer care is below par, i wouldn't feel right handing over my money to those very people. i'm not saying i rely entirely on sales care, as if a polite person tried to sell me a poor map i wouldn't have that either. there's a balance. manners and understanding cost nothing.
Title: Re: Remap Poll
Post by: xxx_mojo_xxx on February 23, 2009, 02:02:56 pm
Agree.  My only concern is that depending on where you go a remap can cost anything from £199 to £500.

As there is no real skill required, apart from an investment in the equipment - I think a remap should ideally be at the £200 mark and no more.

i'd love a £200 remap, although i feel they are few and far between now.

how much are stage 1 revo currently?

I think with the Revo 20 % off you are looking at £470.
You can still get remaps for around 200, but you would be mad IMHO. the GTI is a 20,000 grand car, i would only go with a map that has a proven record. All maps will make it go faster its up to you if you want to trust such an expensive car to still be performing a few years down the line. this thread disturbs me

Guys/Gals  this isnt the ECU on Stephensons 'Rocket' , its a very complex and intricate piece of electronics.
The map is derived from thousands of hours of multi environment testing.
The number of changeable factors and their subsequent influence on others variables is more than tricky!
There are also numerous factors that the end user may decide influence the choice of buying.

Do your research, put the factors in order of priority for YOU, then go with that tuner.
Be careful to not follow the mistakes of others, or necessarily take forum facts as 'facts'

For me it was APR or REVO , I chose APR. But I'm sure Id be happy with REVO too.

I'd be intrigued to understand what in particular is better about the APR and REVO maps, say, in comparison to Bluefin or SuperChips? Please elaborate...
Title: Re: Remap Poll
Post by: john_o on February 23, 2009, 03:43:33 pm
The Bluefin (product) is marketed/developed by Superchips (company) so thats the same thing.
'better' is in the eye of the beholder. I would suggest a few 'parameters'

customer base (size)
customer feedback
type of customer profile
distance from you
cost
development time and resource to produce product
updates
VW specific or other makes too?
time in business
dyno plots (both from company and from forums , they differ greatly). shape is as if not more important then ultimate numbers
AirFuelRatio data, EGR temp data etc
ability and type of switching , stock vs mapped mode
adjustable (only REVO can do this)

to name but a few.  :happy2:

[edit: just like to add , Im no expert, just trying to provide an unbiased opinion to allow you to choose for yourself ]

Thanks for this VTEC buster.

Those figures look very impressive.  Are those bhp/torque figures taken at the wheels on the dyno and are they for a GTi or ED30?

I've just had mine remaped... profiles attached - nothing as impressive as yours...

<How do I insert my image here>  :signIWS:

Do u think if I went for the Milltek I would be able to get similar figures? Would I need to get the car put back on the dyno for remapping?

P.S. Was that a turbo-back or cat-back exhaust?

Would you like to elaborate on this a little? Never heard anything so ridiculous!?

I take it you would be able to crack an MED9 ECU in your sleep then?

I take it you would be able to crack an MED9 ECU in your sleep then?

He rattles off complicated algorithms on his lunch break, I heard.

I remember Darran, Ex VW Racing employee, giving me a run down on what was involved with writing a map, it takes real skill and intelligence, so its no real wonder the prices they charge.
