Title: Very Basic Question
Post by: POC on November 13, 2010, 05:11:46 pm
Just being lazy here.  I need to sling some oil in the gti to bring the level up a little.  Question is, what weight oil should I put in?  The car is new to me and I have no idea what would be in there already.

Thanks, Paul

It should be in your manual. I'm assuming you drive a GTI, in which case it's 5W-30. Avoid Quantum and Mob1l. Stick to Castrol stuff.

Ask them if they are VW504 approved. Specifically those words. Not "recommended" for, not "accepted", "504 approved".

it might be 10w40 i no it should be 5w30 culd also be semi/part or full synthetic but would be worth double checking before you put the wrong stuff in, ring previous service garage, or get a full oil change :)

If you have a GTI, it's 5W-30 but make sure you buy Castrol EDGE as this is recomended and approved by Vw "504 Standards" or something. IT's also compatible with the Longlife Service.

But as mentioned, this should be in your Manual :happy2:

Thanks guys, I think I may just drop the oil and do a full change myself.  I assume its a pretty straight forward job?

Thanks guys, I did a full oil change myself today.  Used castrol Edge 5-30, along with a genuine filter/replacement sump plug.

yer its ment to be 5w30 but the last time i had it serviced that was what was put in,

but its being changed next month to 5w-30,

i just thought id point out so he didnt put the wrong stuff in, although i no you can mix the oils well up to 0.5 of a litre anyways without problems.

also i have a bottle of the quantum 5w-30 oil at home and on the front it clearly states that its VW 504/507 approved, so there should be no problem with using quantum oil from tps
