Thoughts? I know most are not fans of the Griffin, but there are some nice lines and touches I reckon. If it rolls off the production line with 21's though (which I highly doubt) I can't see it doing to well in the twisties..  :scared:

Unlike the old Astra (but like the current VXR Corsa) this was designed from the ground up to be a hot-hatch. The old Astra was a 'normal' hatch that got warmed up. So it should handle corners and the power quite well.

I'll never, ever own one (badge snob, reputation and all that), but like the old Astra, I will quietly appreciate it's aggresive lines from a far. Hope it's better inside that the out going Astra though.

This one'll have the same front suspension set-up as the Insignia VXR which is a version of the Revoknuckle idea that Ford pinched from Renaultsport. I reckon it'll handle pretty well and besides, most of the notions that Vauxhalls don't handle come from that nob end Clarkson who has a compulsive disorder that makes him slate everything they make!

To be fair, all the cars he slated were crap. The old Vectra was just awful scary to drive, I've never experienced understeer like it, even at sensible speeds. Spearing straight-on on round abouts is not something I enjoy. But let try to avoid making this a VXR/Vauxhall slagging thread...

And the rumours about Ford nicking the tech from Renault are just that - internet hear-say.

Very impressed with this

looks like a mix of megane and rocco to me finished off with a splash of max power, clarkson speaks the truth  :happy2:

to change the tyres in a few years time will cost more than its worth..

That's really nice, a serious bit of design. Guess we wait to see how it drives eh? The Insignia is a great car, so hopefully they've learnt to not just throw power at a crap chassis finally.

Oh, and the old VXR handled like a sack of sh*t - I don't care what badge was on it, I'd say the same if it was a VW. I was lent one for a week that had been through 888 to apparently make it better, it was shocking. Bloody fast in a straight line though!

Fully concur, with work I get to drive the CDTi variant quite a lot.  The car is very easy to drive fairly fast.

Not only will 21" tyres be expensive those wheels are

I agree that a lot of Vauxhall line up is carp. However the Insignia is the exception to the rule. Having been in the new Insignia VXR i can safely say that car is a weapon and a half :driver:

Not a massive fan of that, the side proportions are wrong, looks to tall probably not helped by the stupid wheels, also the interior is still not my cup of tea the steering wheels has the proportions of a horses head, and lets not even start on the collection of buttons on the center console!

Nice motor that is hindered by a quite frankly ridulous kerb weight.. Estate version is getting on for 2 tonnes  :surprised: Which gives it a power/weight similar to the Corsa VXR..
But as others have said, lovely looking car.. Just struggles with it's weight a bit IMO..

How much is this car, and what are it's vital stats, e.g. bhp, engine size, etc.?

Early rumours suggest a 2.0 direct injection 4 pot (similar to ours) kicking out 286bhp

New Ford ST - 250ps and 266lbft from a 2.0T engine.

If I was under pain of death to choose to own either the VXR or the ST........................it would be the ST :scared:

VAG seriously need to look into something more potent that 207hp.  Woefully slow compared to the competition.

fWith the alternatives all offering between 50 and 86hp more powerful(as standard) the extra sucharge for having that VW badge suddenly starts to become a large waste of money.  Plus the build quality isnt that much better than the others to justify the extra cost,

i think the std engine in the GTI needs to become equivalent to that in the Golf R. that puts the performance smack bang in the centre of the meganne RS, ST, and VXR.  Then the Golf R and S3 should be aiming at the 300hp region to target the focus RS

I look at Vauxhall cars with an open mind (love the Corsa VXR for example) but this one is OTT and the designers have been trying far too hard. The wheels are truly horrible!

The side looks like a Cupra (the only good thing), the back reminiscent of the Rocco (not good), and the front a mating between Ford and Peugeot. The interior looks a mess.

I don't care how fast it is or how inexpensive to buy...

have always hated the VXR, the only good thing in them are the seats.  really wasnt impressed with the handling or the on/off power band.

loved the st, and loved the vRS.

out of interest what sort of 1/4 do modded astras make?

290-300bhp depending on what rollers you go on.. These are the best results i've seen mind. There can be some shockers like with any car/driver..   :driver:
