Title: Has anyone got an ED30 will a milltek exhaust? bit of help please!
Post by: heavyd on November 21, 2010, 11:43:54 am
Hello folks. I had a milltek exhaust fitted by Dave at PDT.
I washed the car today, and noticed the rear valance was all stained around where the tailpipe is. This is only off 2 weeks of use, and has been washed weekly aswell. it wont wash off with a schmitt and zymol, looks like its going to need polish to remove it.
I thought the exhaust should have been protruding further out, but Dave said thats how they are fitted. I never had any smoke residue off my standard exhaust, but now I have. I was just wondering if people had a milltek, they would be able to check how far their exhaust sticks out in comparison, just incase it does need adjusting.
Thanks in advance for any help :happy2:

I don't have a picture of my old one but that doesn't look right.
They should be quite a snug fit and stick out around 1/2 inch past the valance so you can read the Milltek logo.

Someone will be along shortly with a pic I'm sure.

This has been an 'issue' since Milltek started welding on the tailpipes rather than having them on adjustable clamps. If it was a new system then things would have been a lot simpler but as its 2nd hand the history of the exhaust is unknown.

You have 2 options really, you can slide the centre section forward a little so that the tailpipes protrude a little more but then the hangers wont line up perfectly and they will stretch towards the back of the car slightly. The other side effect is that the overlap on the centre pipe only has around 10mm more movement towards the back of the car before the expansion gaps in the exhaust will allow gasses to leak out.

So we might be able to get another 10mm of length on the system, if you want us to try, just call the office and arrange to bring it in. :happy2:

I was only trying to find out what other peoples looked like first Dave, and got some facts before I got in touch. I know you mentioned the welded tailpipes, and the design you have on yours is much better as they stick out about an extra inch!
It wouldnt have been a problem  if I had a black valance!
Thanks Dave, I'll pop along next week after work  :happy2:

Looks like you might only need it moving back 10mm, so sliding the joints as much to the rear as you can while not overstretching the rubbers hopefully will work.

My milltek seems to grow quite a bit when it gets hot and looks like it sticks out too far so had to adjust it to sit as far in as looking ok when cold to still look good when hot!

Looks like the Back box needs turning. There are some clamping bolts at the back on the drivers side that if you slacken them off will allow you to straighten it.

Mr Stokeballon adjusted mine awhile back at a jkm meet. Took seconds to do.

I have mine tucked back mate and much prefer it to them sticking out. Main reason being is that once the exhaust gets some heat into it it will expand and move out further from the valance. I had mine moved back because of this, as when I had been giving it some stick, the bloody thing nearly tripped me over  . It came a good 1 1/2" further out from the car than when cold.
I personally would leave it be, as once it's warmed up it will move out anyway  :happy2:
As for the staining, I have the same problem mate and have no idea how to get it off TBH..  :sad1: Will keep an eye on this post to see if anyone has an answer, although I think it is more of a problem on CW cars TBH..

Sounds like I might just try and move the clamps to try and get the drivers side pipe out a bit, might help even the pipes out a bit and bring them out a touch. If youre having the same troubles with the staining Ron, sounds like i might need to put extra coats of wax on the valance
Only wish I had some daylight to work in!
Thanks for the advice, and also Saint Steve for the photos, yours still seems to sit better than what mine does though :stupid:

My Eddy had a cat back Milly, and it sat wrong.  With it seated correctly at the front 2 joints (to stop gas leakage) it sat about an inch under the valence.

With it flush at the valence, it leaked from the joint to the OEM downpipe.  Never got it sorted, just a pain in the aris.

That just needs turning, the left pipe is out too far, and the right ones too far in.

Re-align should sort that out.

This is the exact problem with this system, it seems hit and miss as to which system is effected, wether its a difference in the car or the exhaust I dont know.....

Its not a problem with the rear section but with the joint between the centre section and downpipe and the position of the hangers. If you line up the hangers perfectly and sleeve the 2 sections together correctly this is how the exhaust sits, so you have to weigh up the correct fitment against aesthetics.

Yea you cant really turn the back box, its on hangers each side and just sits there so wont really twist.

Sliding it out the middle part might bring it round slightly though. (being carefull not to move the whole box to the right!)

Might be interesting to see where the backbox sits with no middle part connected, just on the rubbers, see where it sits. Then you will no what part it is.

I was dissappointed in the sound of the exhaust as its no different from stock, but I found the turbo spooled up quicker and had better low down power than before. But the way the weather has been, I just get traction control lights flashing if I put my foot down, also the tyres on the car are rubbish which doesnt help.
I did notice a difference in power delivery from both mods straight after though.
I'm switching to revo and getting a HPFP next year anyway,  bluefin stage 2 was only £50, so was worth a look
I see how it fairs at the magical motorscope rolling road in january :signLOL:

I have heard a lot of people say the Resonated Milltek is quieter than stock.

So I am not surprised with your comments about it being no different than stock.

My res system was similar to stock when cruising, but still barked on WOT, especially if you're outside the car

From about 5k revs with a lead boot its louder from the cabin
but on idle and normal driving its the same. I might get the non resonated pipe next year, still in two minds with that though cos I dont want to end up with the dreaded drone at 70 - 80mph :scared:

But that's the whole point of the resonated system bud.. A lot of people don't want a loud exhaust when driving normally. They just want a fruity sound when stretching there right toes..
There is also the VWR cat back system to think about. That's sort of in the middle of res and non res and it's noticably louder than a res system inside and out, trust me

I went back to PDT and the refitted the exhaust so it was further back for me. The exhaust trims sit better, but like Dave said, the hangers seem ridiculously stretched to achieve this

My car hasnt been washed since with the weather, its more beige/brown than candy white :scared:
I would have thought claybar would have got rid of the bulk of the sludge. I've got a massive box full of goodies, rotary, porter cable, menzerna polishes etc etc so not that worried about it, but once theres a clear day, I give it a wash and tackle the bumper. That exhaust fit is not right at all.  As already said the hangers are stretched badly.

similar to the fit on mine, I moved the fwd joint back, to relieve the stretch on the hangers, and put up with a slight blow.

I would reseal it, and eventually it would blow again.  PITA.
