About fooking time too..  :pomppomp:  Although it won't be drawing me in at nearly 1600kgs and ONLY available in Sportback variant (epic fail from Audi IMO)  :sad1: If I was weighing out that cash i'd be heading to my nearest BMW dealer to lob a deposit on the 1M..

Oh and no twin oval tailpies?!?!?! WTF!   :surprised:

Hang on! I don't like Audis, but I like that! What's going on?!

Looking forward to seeing the OEM black alloys!

If its only going to be available in 5 door, give me a 3 door S3 any day, not that I could afford to spend £40k on a car anyway!

They will all sell, no doubt. But they'll all be sold to rich dude's for their Mrs to poke about town in.. Same with the Golf R, VAG don't seem to be targeting/listening to the enthusiast anymore it seems.. Very sad!

Are you basing that opinion on the fact it's only available as a 5 door?

....A few perhaps but I don't agree.

It's got me seriously thinking if I can make the maths work! Raid my savings? Raid my daughter's trust fund?

Damn them for showing the RS3 in throbbin' red!!

5-door, S-tronic, is the only option I'd be interested in and those wheels are my favourite Audi alloys. All I'd need is a Milltek exhaust to enjoy that engine and black Audi ring badging.

That and the fact you'll be paying north of £45k for a decent specced one... As I said, they will sell them no problem. But I dare say that the majority of them that you see on the roads won't be driven by proper enthusiasts, more like middle aged house wifes who wanted a top of the range A3 that they can get people and shopping in..
I think the excuse about not releasing it in the 3 door variant because it may clash with the sales of the TTRS is quite frankly ridiculous!!! Totally different cars for totally different applications IMO.. Plus it's not like they've released them at the same time either. If someone wants a TTRS then they have had plenty of time to buy one..

I'm not saying that no enthusiast will buy one Robin, because they obviously will and I look forward to seeing you in one with the customary middle finger out the window..  :signLOL: However, what I don't think will happen will be an influx of owners on a owners forum like this (obviously build numbers will be a lot less I know), just look at the Golf R compared to the R32..

....I assume you're referring to the red option wheel. Having seen the standard option wheel design on Stu's white S3 Sportback they look great imo.

Those red wheels might look quite good on a silver or white RS3 but I'd reserve judgement until seeing in the flesh.

Comes with a lap-timer as oem: Nice touch.

You will be able to get a decent specced one for 40k IMO for a new one that's already sitting at the dealers lot.

Just had revo loaded to mine sat and I have to say the performance is mind-blowing. Vbox figures say in gear acceleration is quicker than a 997 turbo, pre facelift GTR and r8 v10 and I can believe it. Now when I play against waynes stage 2 plus k1 I'm always left wondering whether he's trying or not anymore lol. Throw in some bends and the Cupra seriously gets left for dead. It's on a completely different level now with the map. If you have the means to get one just do it. Worth every penny once mapped.

What sort of options are available then?

I guess the buckets and glass roof will come at a hefty cost, but what else is available?

On Audi's website its got the standard spec on there now - it mentions the buckets seats as an optional extra but nothing else

http://www.audi.co.uk/new-cars/a3/rs3-sportback/specifications.html (http://www.audi.co.uk/new-cars/a3/rs3-sportback/specifications.html)

Id imagine it would be simular to the options you get on the TTRS:

Sports Exhaust: £760
Bucket Seats £1950
Aluminium Styling Pack £650
Exclusive RS Multifunctional Wheel £760
Audi Magnetic Ride £1150
Optional 20" Wheels £2045

And thats not even all of them!

Might not be the same on the RS3 but i wouldnt of thought it was too far off

Why a S-Tronic only?  A portion of potential owners will be disappointed.

Why Sportback only? A Further portion of potential owners disappointed.

seems a bit daft really, no RS3 hatch, also the /controls are exactly the same as the GF's A3 Black edition TDI.

Manual S3 (non SB) and pennies in the Sherman for me.

Having just looked over the Standard Spec. Nothing Springs to mind that i would want on top. So i'd just save the money for Options and chuck it at REVO & Miltek

I wonder if its because the RS' come with Leather Half buckets as standard where as the R20's standards are cloth? Therefore make the upgrade to Full buckets cheaper in the Audi range?

What do you mean? If we're comparing the upgrade cost of the buckets, then the higher cost of the VW items would suggest the standard seats are of lesser quality than the Audi equivalents... and as such the cost to upgrade them on the Golf would be greater.

One thing for sure though is that when you sit behind the wheel of an Audi (thinking of Stu's fully loaded S3 Sportback), you have luxury and performance. The luxury feeling at least reminds you that you've got something for your money and makes you feel very successful.

Having said that, I love my more basic Mk5 GTI interior just as much... It's just different.

Title: Re: RS3 Announced
Post by: vRS Carl on November 22, 2010, 01:48:35 pm
The point i'm making is what difference does it make what you have in to start with. If the Seat costs £1750 from Audi then it should be £1750 across the VAG range of cars said seats fit in. Even if the standard seat is a Wicker chair it's not as if they take the old seats out and put the new ones in. It's done at the factory when the car is built (unless you opt to do it yourself later on)

Even if the standard seat is a Wicker chair it's not as if they take the old seats out and put the new ones in.

In terms of the end cost of the car they might as well. The standard seat effects the cost of the car, and as such if the standard seat in a Golf costs them £500 to put in, and the Audi seat costs them £1000 to put in, then the cost of upgrading said seats is obviously going to be different.

For arguments sakes

If the Standard R20 Cloth seats cost VW £500 and the cost of the Bucket seats are £3,500 then the shortfall is £3000.00

If the Standard RS Leather Seats cost Audi £1500 and the cost of the Bucket seats are £3,500 then the shortfall is £2000.00

When you've added the extra of the Bucket seats, they dont expect you to pay for cost of the standard ones too

would never pay £40,000 for a hatch back and i don't care how fast it is. plus to only offer it as a sport back is an epic fail. those sport back A3's look terror imo, basically a snub nose estate.

would much rather the 1M like someone else said and have a much better car in the process!

would much rather the 1M like someone else said and have a much better car in the process!

You have driven both already  :surprised:

Im down to test drive the 1m as soon as it launches, cant wait  :jumping:

Those wheels are standard Black Edition wheels and also an 18" verson of the current TTS wheel.  :happy2:

That 1M im sure will be alot more then Audi'd Rs3.

1 series isnt exactly a good looker. I hope the test car looks better when its finished going by that video.

@strat

Your not a family man yet i guess  .

I think the 5 door looks really good.

Im guessing Audi have gone by the decision that maybe the 3 door s3 version wont be as popular with the TTRS available.

Im no BMW fan tbh, i wouldnt want a BMW on my drive, id rather own an Audi.

Thats me being honest, cus i cant afford either.

haha noooo not family man. wouldnt mind them offering a 5 door for those that wanted it, but keeping it solely as a 5 door for no real reason when the 3 door shell is right there seems ridiculous. largely as the 5 door A3 does look like a bus as someone else said. but hey if it floats your boat then take a dip! :)

contrary to you though, i am a bmw fan and yes although the 1 series isn't known for its looks, i think the 1M will look suitably aggresive and purposeful and would rather have that than the A3 which looks dreary at best. some may well disagree though, as is the way of things!

Although £40k is a lot of monies, the main reason it is not for me is the Gearbox and body restrictions.

I would only have a 3dr manual.  The 3dr would be lighter and able to exploit the donkey it is fullest, also manual is for me.  The DSG/S-tronic would be great in traffic, I just prefer the Manual, and would spend the cash on some bucket seats, and tyres.

I also think the stance in the flesh will be nothing like the pictures, somewhat higher in the flesh.......

....As you know only too well, I'm a DSG / S-tronic fanboy but I think it's a great pity that this RS3 isn't also offered with the option of a manual tranny.

Good point about the flesh stance. Apart from the front intakes and roof spoiler, this could look too similar to the S3... Good old Audi do the dull-dance yet again?  :sad1: Don't get me wrong, I admire the S3 (thinking very much of Stu's Black Edition white S3 Sportback) but I still haven't grown up yet and like a bit more in-yer-face stylez!

I would opt for the TT-RS with the S-Tronic 7 speed box. Rated to 650nm the 'box will take the full 450bhp stage 2+ power and torque with no hassles. Just happens to weigh less, look better and sit lower than the RS3 too. :happy2:

Glad someone else feels the same way too. I think it looks too A3/S3 with the sportback - if it'd look more the RS4, I might have to think about finding a way to get my inheritance early!

If I did buy that, I'd get rid of the silver/chrome trim on the exterior, or change them to black/bodycoloured, have quad tailpipes (the rear is screaming for them), and I'd do something about that silly boot spoiler.

IMO the red-trimmed wheels would look good only on black, red and white cars - on any other, they'd just look silly!

....Exactly why friend Dan did that Photoshop version for me (though I didn't ask him to).

An alternative to the quads would be oval pipes, one each side.

I have been waiting for this for a long time and all in all im preety disappointed!

Not a huge fan of the SB, why they didn't give it twin oval tail pipes is completely beyond me and from where im sitting, I think it looks daft that they have flared the front arches and not the rear!

I am sure it's engine will make up for most of it's styling shortfalls but I think I will have to be looking elsewhere for my next motor! If it was 3 door with 4 flared arches and some nice twin ovals I would be in the Audi dealer now, shame  :sad1:

Whilst I'm sure many of you don't like it as a SB I think it's been done for marketing reasons, that being that the target market is not 20 - 30 year olds but more likely 30 onwards who will likely have children and want the 5 doors.  I guess there is an option for a 3 door if demand warrants it and it may be scheduled for build and release at a later date.

My guess is they're expecting quite a limited lifespan as it clearly uses the current 8P chassis and not the newer shape that is apparently due next year.

^^^^
And also that the majority of those who can or want to afford £40k+ are perhaps more likely to be 30yo+.

It isn't just for the sake of children that a 5-door is valuable. It's far more practical for all rear seat passengers and also for loading/unloading. Anyway, Audi will know much more about their market than we enthusiasts think we do with our somewhat blinkered opinions.

As Stu suggests, we actually don't know if a 3-door RS3 won't ever be launched.

As for the opinion that releasing the RS3 when Audi's next generation 3-series is apparently so soon to be replaced in 2011, is stupid: How do we know the next gen will be attractive - Just look at the styling of the Golf Mk6! How are sales of the Mk6 GTI going? I hardly see any at all.

I like it!
This is the car my 5 door Ed30 aspires to!
It has everything I could want: 5 doors, an engine to die for, easily tuneable, 4-wheel drive to put all that power down and its classily packaged.

I've always preferred 5-door cars actually -- I don't care if people think they look less sporty than the 3-door model -- I'd rather have the ease of use that comes with having two extra doors.  It never did make sense that someone should have to get out for more people to get in, oh and the shorter doors you get on 5-door models make access in car parks much easier.

There was one thing I never understood though... why do two extra doors only cost £500 when a window in your roof costs £700?

....As ever, ETTO  :happy2: but I so much prefer the look of Audi's 'Avants' (estates) to their saloons and, apart from the practicality already discussed, this RS3 looks like a mini-Avant and I love that. It just needs Milltek to fit a twin oval pipes exhaust.

Robin - that Biali pic looks perfect! You always said if they made an RS3 in sportback with S-Tronic then you would be first on the order list.
This may help you get your wallet out!

....I never said I'd be the first (I already know of two people in the UK who have ordered) but only that it would be the only S3 version to interest me in buying.

That official vid is crap! There's no engine sounds except that awful FSI clatter at the front end. The engine the RS3 has is a major selling feature.

....I assume you mean it will be copied and adapted by aftermarket manufacturers to fit other A3 models. Tracking etc is different on the RS3 so I doubt it could be copied absolutely exactly. However, it could have a very similar appearance.

But so what? It wouldn't stop me wanting to buy a RS3. Afterall, there's quite a few folks who have fitted Mk5 GTI fronts on their Golf diseasals etc and it doesn't bother me but there's no way I'd do it!

Just a heads up that the RS3 should appear on The Audi configurator next week. Deliveries expected from April 2011. I'm hoping to get a ride in one before then however

Went out in a RS5 today. Very nice indeed with great soundtrack from the 4.2 V8.

Hope to get a ride in a TTRS next week to compare.

Shame the friend can't get the R8 GT out of the showroom lol.

TTRS will be quicker if its s-tronic than the rs5.

Waynes got a b7 RS4 at the moment and whilst its v.v.nice, it is kinda slow, reminds me of just a bigger more powerful r32. Nice soundtrack as you say though.

As Luke said - Tillet seats. If you get a chance to go to the Autosport show at the NEC in Birmingham, then they have loads on display from different manufacturers and you get to sit in them all to see if they fit and how comfortable they are.

Competition eh Pov?

I think the way forward for the RS3 would be a good diet for starters :signLOL: 1575kg is a little lardy, so if I can get some lightweight seats, battery and wheels on that should drop the weight substantially to at least 1570kg

335bhp and 1.575t = 212bhp/ton

Add a stage 1 remap

403bhp and 1.575t = 256bhp/ton

Lose some weight (approx 50kg)

403bhp and 1.535t = 262bhp/ton

Then stage 2

435bhp and 1.535t = 283bhp/ton

should help move the car.

The fact that the s-tronic gearbox is rated at 650nm and even stage 2 would give around 580nm means that I should see decent launches with no clutch slip and 4wd.

so the RS3 should go sub 4 seconds to 60mph......hopefully :driver: and low 12's/high 11's on the qtr mile and (fingers crossed)and easy sub 8 mins on the 'ring (B to G).

With just a remap I reckon it would be as quick an R8! well into licence losing speeds.

R8 has 414bhp and 317lbft and weighs the same as the RS3, so it would be the S-tronic and the extra lbft after a remap that may even give the RS3 the edge.

add a 100 shot of nitrous and you are staring at beating up a R8 V10

Some more info:

"Courtesy of the Audi internal system:

All 'Audi UK Centres' will be allocated one Demo Car per centre and one showroom vehicle per group by Audi UK......... there are approx 120 centres in the UK. Also add press and marketing vehicles.

There are no updates or actual quoted dates on delivery of any cars Demo or otherwise as of today, only information currently available is that Delivery dates will not be available until March 21st at the earliest, and deliveries will not commence until "Summer" at the earliest...........This is followed by "Customers should be made fully aware of this, as there expectations should be managed to suit................pretty self explanatory.

As for there only being a limited production of 500 units for the UK, and this being in actual "written documentary form" unless one is referring to the actual Audi internal system, where this figure is noted, as my matey in Audi commented is absolute "B*ll*x"

The TT including the TT-RS has an aluminium and steel chassis. The RS3 if it follows the S3 will have an all steel chassis. With the RS3 weight at 1575kg, my money would be on Audi keeping the S3 chassis.

The chassis is the only thing Evo don't rate on their TT-RS...

Ego magazine rate it as a everyday car and not as a fantasy car like some exotica which all end up as garage queens

The chassis is a really good one, we have 3 guys over on VAGOC who competively race their TTs and my god you wouldnt believe how well they are doing, and some of the exotica these humble TTs are beating. All it needs is some arbs to dial out the understeer.

Quote from one of the racers

We raced 4 weeks ago and finished 5th outright amongst 220 cars (beat ALL GT3 Porsches.) got beaten by 2 Lamborghini Superleggari, 1 GT2 997, and one Subaru STi (factory backed).

Not bad for a car with a stage 1 map, h&r rear arb, coilovers, and rs4 front calipers.  :happy2:

Friend Hurdy, just to tease me, configured a RS3 knowing me well and what I like [that sounds wrong and has nothing to do with us being room-mates on more than one occasion] and of course included those mouth-watering seats - It added up to £52k! The problem is that I've grown very used to that style of Recaro but £5k is taking the piss unless you're loaded with dosh. I guess that Audi realise that there are plenty folks out there, and especially Germans, who are loaded - It's their most profitable market.

...."Warrant" or justification isn't really a major factor. It's really whether I want it and then, of course, if the funds are available or not. You only live once (AFAIK!). The first step will be a test drive. Plenty of time ahead to decide if desirable and if do-able. I might desire but not be able financially without risking my future, or I might be disappointed by the car (probably doubtful) - Who knows.

I expect the sound may be down partly to the video quality and also maybe muted by European drive by noise regulations which govern such things.

The tyres are mighty impressive and deffo not summer tyres!!

They will all sell, no doubt. But they'll all be sold to rich dude's for their Mrs to poke about town in.. Same with the Golf R, VAG don't seem to be targeting/listening to the enthusiast anymore it seems.. Very sad!

All I'd need is a Milltek exhaust to enjoy that engine and black Audi ring badging.

....£1,000 for those Corbeau and plus £960 for alcantara - I sure as hell wouldn't want leather! Far too slippy.

The Audi S4 has an alcantara option so why not the RS3?

You mentioned in a couple of threads about the leather being to slippy, have you ever sat in a recaro seat with leather.  :chicken:  I can assure you that you dont move one inch because of the side bolsters holding you into the seat, the whole design of the seat is based on keeping you supported under G. Being leather makes no difference. I could see your point if you were sitting in the back of a black cab. Go to any aftermarket seat shop and nearly all the seats have a leather option. Surely they would not sell them, if the leather was preventing the seat from serving purpose.   :happy2:

Robin strikes me as the kind of gent about town who may have owned a pair in his time. I imagine they're not easy to remove.

.... You're absolutely dead right! I used to have a pair of very dark blue leather trousers back in the days of Elton John style stack heel multi coloured shoes. Later, in the days of Roxy music I had green streaked hair. The King's Road Chelsea was a literally a daily haunt.

I haven't sat in leather Recaro's but was in a M3 recently and found the leather seats too slippy for my liking. My RS3 test drive will be the proof of the pudding. Actually, I've just now remembered that I have recently been passenger in a Mk5 GTI with leather Recaro's and found it too slippy - Not very slippy but enough for me to notice.

Hee hee. I demand pics.

Odd though, I was listening to Roxy music today whilst everyone had decided to abandon me in the office today. Great stuff, no Talking Heads though!

If I had pics I'd post them just for the laugh but unfortunately I don't. Roxy gave me free tickets and a photographer's pass when they first started and hadn't made it big yet. Was in the days of Eno and Bryan Ferry in a matador's jacket - Such style! "Avalon" is still one of my favourite Roxy songs, also "Out Of The Blue" is one to fly to! All of the band are great musicians.

They just had a gift for everything, I wish I had musical talent and could see that kind of world. Ahh, the 80's were the shiznit. I wish I'd been of an age to enjoy them properly. Still my favourite era of music on the whole though I think - electronica, opulence and everything at 11.

Saying that, you can't argue with the proper pioneers, we're currently smashing Led Zep through the house.

Oh yes! LedZep (TC loves them too). Was at their 1970's gig in London, shared a girlfriend with Jimmy Page for a short while (half-Asian half Japanese chick - A beautiful butterfly!). A good friend, Bob Freeman, worked as film cameraman with them too - Lots of connections but I'm sounding like I'm boasting. Just fond memories and a time in my life I'll never forget. Thanks for bringing them to my mind, Mike  :drinking:

Good vid of them live:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flcF4vNa61U&feature=related < Jimmy Page, guitar  :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

Back on topic:

I had a read of latest EVO mag in WHSmith's public library, in which there was a 2-page spread on the new RS3. It seems the opportunity to the gentlemen of the press to drive the RS3 in Canada was a bit limited (also borne out by Top Gear mag's report). Journo's seem to be saying it's a little heavy, lacks feedback, but otherwise seems very promising and they look forward to test driving it more fully.

Apparently Audi based their S-tronic decision on the noticeably big demand they saw on the flappy paddle version of the TTRS. They insist that the 3-door version is the TTRS.

Was just looking at the stats, and the SB is only 3" longer than the 3 door..................

Still got Sh!t Tronic box though!  Bah!  Went to chat with Audi whilst the Roc was getting serviced.

It seems no plans to stick a real gearbox in it!  I could live with SB (it will fit nicely in the garage) but not the Gearbox.

Had a look at a TTRS too, very nice, not as nice as the R8 V10 Spider next to it.

thats the norm with audi and VAG even.  compared to the alternatives they often lack feel.  Maybe not as focussed as say a mitsubishi EVO FQ360, but id still take the audi all day long

....Do you think that's why Audi have the wider tyres and track on the RS3's front?

How on earth does a car like the RS5 get as far as production with that degree of understeer not getting sorted?  :stupid: Especially from Audi.

I'm not sure the 235 vs 225 F/R will make all that much difference really. But it's a sure sign it's more front driven than rear driven and it needs assistance to get front end gripping. Hmmm. Sure Hurdy will get that Haldex controller on it from day 1 to get it handling right

That RS5 vs M3 in cornering was just shocking. It's designed for straight roads.(i.e AMERICA)
More GT car for long cruises than driver involvement and enjoyment in the twisties.

....Then it somewhat contradicts what the whole Audi RS badge is meant to represent  :sad1:

Lee all VAG cars understeer, or at least that's the way is seems to me. That RS5 'should' stick to a track like glue, and I'm sure it can be made to do so, but audi seem to think understeer is safer/better.

My dads quattro A5 also understeers.

Will the RS3 understeer? Just like you lee... Yes (IMO)... Infact it might be worse as it isn't perrma4x4

....Hurdy costed the one I would have had and IIRC it came to around £50k.

Whether it's a hatchback or Avant or whatever, what difference does it make? - It's a performance car which either ticks your boxes or it doesn't. It ticks most of my boxes but I can't currently afford one and I love my GTI far too much to part with it anyway.

Thought it said 68,000 Euros?   Either way, it's still bloody bonkers money for what is in essence a hatchback on 6-7 year old platform..

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a lovely motor and the engine is one of the best out there at the min.   If I had my way I would have a TTRS on my drive right now, so i'm far from a hater.. Just think that sort of money could be spent a lot better elsewhere, but like Robin said, ETTO and @ around £40-45k it's a lot more of a tempting option..
