Title: Beddie's Edition 35 - Back on track! :)
Post by: Beddie on November 23, 2010, 12:03:44 am
Well after 2 years and 37K of ownership i thought it time i finally got round to a few pics  :happy2:

Bought her back in December 2008 as an ex-demo car with 4K on the clock, had been after an ED30 for a few months and when one with the exact spec i wanted came up i took a chance and put a phone deposit on it then got Mrs Beddie to drive me the 90 miles to the dealers the next day as i was very hung over thanks the the work xmas doo...

Here it is the day we bought it and proof that some of the best decisions in life are made whilst slightly drunk, did the same with Mrs Beddie as it happens...

Never been a great fan of red cars, but yours looks the business. I really like the fact that all the mods are tasteful, subtle and discrete OEM+ FULL MARKS. Good Job!

Is that a Kangoo van in the background, how fast does it go Mista?

Winter spec Danza approved, dare I say, I think I actually prefer the Monzas.

Makes the effort of keeping it nice and shiny worthwhile when people can appreciate the results, hard work too with Mrs Beddie aiming for every pile of mud on a daily basis...

Lovely looking car. Its a credit to you.
What are the Hankook Ice Bear W300 tyres like?

Cheers!  :happy2:

Tyres have now been on for 4 days and around 300 miles and i'm impressed!, great wet weather grip and not noticeably louder on any road surface than the PS3s, slightly harder ride which may be down to stiffer sidewalls perhaps? Going to play with the pressures as i'm not sure whether i should be running them lower than the PS3s or not?
If the weather forecasts are to be believed i should get to give them a proper test when we head to Edinburgh this weekend...  :scared:

£390 all in for 4 via my local tyre place (price matched to Camskill)

They sound good. Let us know how they are when the bad weather sets in. I'm after a set for my 17" for the winter, but a lot are out of stock. Would be intrested at that price.

I got the springs through Volkswagen Racing but the exact same AP -20mm springs can be got from DPM performance for considerably less so give them a try first ;)

Very happy with the results and it transformed an already quick car into a bit of a weapon! Drives beautifully on the road and combined with the DSG box and Launch control makes for quite a ride...

The extra ooomph showed up a few weak points in the standard setup, most of all the shockingly bad brakes for a 300Bhp car! So, decided it was time for a bit of a modathon so a big box of bits were loaded into the boot and whisked down to PSI Tuning...

Whilteline WALK kit - To help with a bit more front end traction

Volkswagen Racing -20mm spring kit - Wanted to firm up the handling without going too low due to the bad roads round here

H&R front and Rear ARB's (26mm front, 22mm rear) - probably the most notable mod after the brakes

S3 345mm front brake kit - Nice easy OEM mod with HEL braided lines, Motul RBF600 fluid and Mintex M1144 to help things along

Left if looking like this [au]

It seems to me that mr steve p should rename this place "red mk5 golf gti forum" we are crawling in them!

I was admiring your motor at AllTypes the other week, very clean and the mods are inspiring. Given me lots of ideas...

I sourced a steel grey ED30 for the missus earlier in the year. I think it may share a work car park with your ED30 in Chester?

Yeah definitely feel lighter when lugging them around compared to the Pescaras Rich  :happy2:

Granted some of the difference could be the weight of the Federals compared to PS3? Either way they do seem to make quite a difference to the 'feel' of the car, feels a bit lighter on its feet as it were and took away some of the heaviness to the steering that the WALK introduced

So 4 years and 70K miles in my trusty '30 now, no new mods to report other than a mini service including new plugs, PCV and DV in readiness for a week of giving the old girl chance to stretch her legs a little

1200 miles, lots of super unleaded and it never missed a beat, still amazes me what a bloody good car it is!  :happy2:

Started out at the Ring

Standard dampers and -20mm AP springs, no rubbing with the TDs after i'd done the front arch screw mod, did get a little touch every now and then before i did it but none since  :happy2:

Ah ha ! Perfect ! AP springs ! That's exactly the ride height I'm looking for ! Is it 20mm front and rear ?
I'm currently using h&r but they are a little bit too Low for me !

What's the ride like on them ? Think they would be perfect to pair with b12 dampers.

Cheers Bryan
Title: Re: Beddie's Edition 30.... 70K birthday trip to Spa
Post by: Beddie on October 19, 2012, 10:39:47 pm
Yeah 20mm front and rear, they are officially VWR springs but when they arrived were in an AP box
I looked at the H&R and also the Eibach Sportlines but felt that both were just a little too low for me personally, the APs have been spot on for 50k miles and the ride quality is no different to stock

My dampers are starting to go off a little now I think, they've had a hard life though to be fair so considering new ones in the shape of either Koni STR.T or the new MK6 fitment Bilstein B8 as they are a lot more compliant for a daily driver than the MK5 version...
Title: Re: Beddie's Edition 30.... 70K birthday trip to Spa
Post by: gobbleplease on October 20, 2012, 10:53:48 am
Awe right I didn't realise the mk6 b8s fitted, I was under the impression that even mk5 b8s had a nice ride ? I've had them before (albeit not on a mk5) and were very good as a daily and on B roads.

Have you tried the mk6 b8s are they still good enough for a bit of track driving ?

I've had kws on my last mk5 gti and they were a bit harsh especially now I've got baby to chuck in the back.
Title: Re: Beddie's Edition 30.... 70K birthday trip to Spa
Post by: Beddie on October 20, 2012, 11:17:52 am
Yeah the mk6 Bilsteins fit straight on, same fitment and axle weights etc but the mk6 version has been revalved to be around 20% (iirc) softer due to customer feedback on the harshness of the mk5 version,
I tried a car with the mk5 setup and just found it a bit too firm for my daily drive and the poor roads round here, not had chance to try a car fitted with the mk6 setup yet but the feedback from those that have them is superb  :happy2:

Bilstein normally get it spot on first time with any setup, but the fact they have softened the mk6 version for an identical chassis setup shows they may have over egged the pudding a touch with the mk5 version?

Saying that those that have them seem to love them and it's undoubtedly a fantastic setup, just too firm imo for a daily especially when combined with my H&R arbs

Great pics Beddie.. :happy2:

Can I ask how your stage1 eddy compares to the RS focus on the road?

 :happy2:

Holds up surprisingly well tbh, the focus in the pics is a beast though (420bhp with brakes and suspension to match) and in a straight fight I'm convincingly outgunned tbh...
But around town and on twisty roads mine is more than a match as the Focus is torque and power limited in 1st and 2nd and is a bit of a handful torque steer wise, throw in the dsg advantage and it's a pretty even match sub 80mph, after that the RS gets into a hell of a stride though, epic car!  :happy2:

I did beat it down the strip at inters though, but he was 2 up and didn't get a good start at all really, but a wins a win lol!!

Awesome looking motor Beddie.

Did you end up upgrading the shocks to Mk6 B8's?

I'm lowered on Sportlines, and I'm considering pairing them now with B8's - just not to sure if I should try Mk6 gear over the Mk5 stuff! I'm at 84,000 miles and the shocks seem to be loosing their smoothness.

Cheers mate  :happy2:

I didn't get round to upgrading the shocks, but was definitely going down the MK6 B8 fitment route as like you I have noticed the oem dampers have started to let go (I'm on 75K) and I was looking to tighten things up without being too harsh for the crappy roads round here  :happy2:

I will be buying some MK6 B8s in the future though as I've just bought a mk6 to replace the ed30  :happy2:

Well after 5 years and 75K trouble free, fast, and enjoyable miles i sadly parted company with the best car i've ever owned. my ed30...  :sad1:

Been fancying a change for a while and a new addition to the Beddie house meant a 5 door would be a more practical choice, spent ages thinking how to replace my beloved ed30 and finally came up with the perfect solution... an ed30 in different clothes with a couple of extra doors aka an ed35

It's a 2012 DSG in carbon grey

Standard ed35 spec of xenons, leather, bluetooth, 'R' tinted rear leds and the ed35 bodykit etc

Took a while to find one with the 18" Watkins Glen wheels as a lot are on the 19" optional Glendales which i'm not keen on tbh, also got:

Cruise

Front and rear park sensors

Park assist thingy

RCD510 with dab

Luxury pack

Loving it so far, just need to get modding  :driver:

Beautiful! I'm amazed to hear it was hard to find one on the 18's - much prefer this design of wheel - far superior IMHO!
Look forward to see how you get on with this one - still newish to my ED30, and yours was a great example.

Thanks mate! Yeah you can tell it has mk5/ed30 dna at heart but seems a little more polished in all areas  :happy2:

Did you keep all the mods from your ED30?

Yeah kept the arbs, brakes, carbonio and bluefin so will be recycling them onto the new one, just need to sort out an exhaust and some springs  :driver:

Was looking at one of these but they are still holding their value 12 months old circa 26000

There's plenty around sub 23K tbh mate, i missed out on 2 late reg '61's that were up for £21.5K before i got this one, mine is a July 2012 with 7K miles and was £22K from a main dealer

Lovely car mate!

Cheers! Yeah a lot of ed35s seem to get the optional 19s which i dont really like either from a looks perspective or the replacement tyre cost lol! Also wanted to keep the bespoke wheels for the ed35 as the glendales can be spec'd on a regular gti,
Subtle mods for this one rather like my ed30 really, brakes, arbs, bushes, suspension and no further than stage 1

Thats why i don't understand this one feeling different, only difference is CDL engine code instead of BYD on the '30

Probably the fish map tbh, only did 2 runs at Inters with shockingly bad 1/4 times and biblical wheelspin... 14.6 & 14.8! but ET's of 104mph both runs so it picks up its skirt once it finds traction  :happy2:

Shame we didnt run against each other at Inters to compare.  Even though my 1/4 was only marginal quicker, my terminal speed was slower.

My 1/4 stock ed30 14.46, yours 14.47. my terminal 97.26.

Anyhow, love the new ride, colour is

Yeah its a fairly decent terminal and only 2mph down on Mike's M135i  for example on the day, but a whopping 1 and 1.2 seconds slower on the 1/4...  :sad1:

Still have the OE discs and some fairly fresh M1144s from the 30 so will be popping them on for now but very tempted to try those project mu pads and some OE TTs discs tbh  :happy2:

I'd pull the trigger on them if I could be 100% sure of the longevity claims as they 'could' pay for themselves if they did last as long as the claims, at current pricing it's the equivalent of 2 sets of 1144/ds2500 and they claim 3 times durability so technically project mu are a bargain

Longevity claims are valid (if using the right compound, overheating anything too soft will wear it)

Therein lies my concern... I know that the 1144s do overheat a little on track currently (for the weight of the golf I really need 1155 but I don't want their road manners), I can live with it as they are a great pad and great value at £120ish but I'd like a better wear rate tbh which brings me to the project mu's..
Trouble is if they overheat and wear to the same degree as the 1144 whilst its not an issue in its self and doesn't affect performance it would be an expensive experiment

Will be rocking the trusty Monza's chief, that's if I ever get any time off work to fit the bloody things!  :fighting:

You could do with a graph of the temp ranges of your 1144s and the P-Mu compound you're looking at - see how they compare and see if it's worth the gamble?

From what I've seen, it'll be a safe bet, but it's still a lot of dough to be rolling to Chester and back each day in traffic.
