I'm thinking of replacing the chrome front badge with a black/carbon fibre one. How much should I be expecting to pay and also is it an easy job??
-
Mega easy to do. Buy it from here - http://www.dubstopimports.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=421710999 (http://www.dubstopimports.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=421710999)

The front VW badge can be removed in two ways:
1. Push in and turn anticlockwise. Has the risk of breaking off one of the tabs, though I guess this isn't an issue if you're throwing it away.
2. Remove the front grille (two torx and two phillips screws), then push in the tabs and remove. Safer.
I got mine from dubstop too. Had it on the car for over a year without any problems.

You can also vynal wrap your existing badge if your feeling up to it!

That's sounds a little difficult for someone who hasn't a creative bone in their body!
-
If I use the method where you push the badge in and turn it anticlockwise, is there a risk of damaging the grill or is it just a risk of damaging the actual badge? I'd like to keep the badge invade I ever want to put it back on but don't fancy taking the front grill off.
-
You should be ok, Ive done it without damging it, just dont force anything :happy2:
-
I like the matte black one from dubimports and I'll probably go for that so thanks guys. But does anyone know where I can get a carbon fibre one that I've seen?
-
I've ordered the one from dubstopimports. If however I decide to get it wrapped in faux carbon fibre vinyl, is their anyone on here who could do it for me? Beer tokens would obviously offered in exchange!

The front grill is a doddle to remove...

I can do it for you if you need!
-
That would be great, have you got any pictures of ones you've done before? (not that I don't trust you!)
-
Ive not done CF before but the principle is the same!

I'll get in touch when it arrives! Thanks. :happy2:

its really simple mate, all you need to do is put the vinyl over the badge and get a stanley knife (or similar) and take your time with it :happy2:
-
To the guys who ordered from dubstopimports- how long did they take to come and also did the delivery driver require a signature as I don't know what courier they're using! Thanks!
-
That black badge looks good! Might (WILL) have to order one.
-
Mine took about 7-10 days to arrive, it just came with the normal royal mail postman if i remember correctly :happy2:
-
+1. I don't recall having to pick it up from the depot. It fitted through the letterbox.
-
That's good as the girlfriend and I are at work during the day so didnt want it going back to Germany!
-
Where are the four screws to rake the grill off? The badge won't budge so I'll have to take the grill off.
-
I just sprayed mine with a few coats of plasti dip. It gives it a nice Matt black finish and if you change your mind just peel the rubber coating off. Simples :)

two at the lower part of the grill ( under the number plate ) and the other two under the bonnet to the inside of the headlights, then just undo the clips next to the top 2 screws and lift the grill off

Cheers for your replies guys. In the end I just undid the torx screws and pulled the grill out a little so I could get my hand down the back. A little unorthodox but I managed it pleased with the result! Looks great.

Can we have some nice pics?

Yeah I'll put some up when it's light again. Thing is now I want a shiny new grill beacause the badge is a little bit darker than the grill at the mo as I'm guessing it's faded little. Any ideas for brightening it up a tad?

May be wrong but I'm sure I read somewhere WD40 was good for this

You sure??
-
WD40 can blacken plastics - I used to use it a lot. However, it apparently can weaken plastics (apparently) though not sure how it does so.
-
WD40 will blacken and shine, as will silicone based sprays like motul shine and go,
other things you can use: -
-dashboard cleaner
-Back to black
and im sure tyre dressing would also bring it up like new aswell.

Just a thought... what about AG Vinyl and Rubber?

I've used it and it's crap. Lasts about 30 mins. Even AG Bymper care is better than Vinyl and Rubber.

Managed to give the car a clean and thought I'd show off my handywork! What you guys think?

Just a question while Im on the subject, if you look to the right of the badge you can see a silver plate through the honeycomb, I think its what holds the radiator on. Its really noticable and im thinking of painting it with some high temp black paint. Ive never noticed this on any other gti, just mine! Has anyone else?
-
Looks spot on minus the bling

I know! :signLOL:
Have you ever seen it like that before?
-
Well yeah, mine has a black badge too :)

Sorry I mean the silver bit behind the honeycomb!
-
I can't say I have. Unfortunately I'm 900 miles away from my car so I can't even look!
-
Maybe it's just me being paranoid because I know it's there and my focus is just drawn to it! Or maybe I've got OCD! :signLOL:
