Title: Anyone know torque rating on a standard OEM clutch?
Post by: jp101 on November 24, 2010, 06:26:07 pm
Hi All,

Been an observer for a few weeks, about time I posted something!

Just about to get my superchips for 2005 mk5 TDI 140ps/336nm.. rates it up to 185bhp, 397nm torque.

Can the standard clutch handle 397nm of torque? seems like an awful lot!

not many diesel drivers on here, but i know of alot of diesel drivers on briskoda in the octaviaII section, with remapped 140s and 170 TDIs

so you dont think there is an issue? ive read rumours that the clutch can only take about 350nm - the same as the R32 puts out (stock).

have a look on briskoda mate, no doubt the clutch on yours will be different to the rest of the petrol range, as the diesels run more torque anyway

We have found that the clutch will begin to slip at around 335-340 ft/lb.

Just remember that clutch ratings and their limits arent just about the amount of torque, its about the amount of torque thats produced at a given RPM. If you hit peak torque of 300 ft/lb at 1800rpm its far more likely to kill a clutch than 350ft/lb at 3500 rpm.

A well developed map will take this into account.

I've had my tdi 140 mapped for a couple of k mls now and all seems ok at the moment. (fingers crossed cos I'm not sure of the history of my clutch).

It also depends on how you drive it, if your in 6th at 50mph and you just plant it to overtake then the clutch wont last long, use the gears and revs and it will last longer.
