Just reading through the service manuals that TT put up.
Are the speakers riveted in place? It talks about drilling out the rivets :surprised:
If so, GOD, that's a bit drastic!!!

They should be, MK4 Golf speakers were also riveted in so its been going on for a good 10 years.
My MK4 Ibiza had similar speakers to the MK4 Golf, when you drill the rivets it melts the plastic surround built onto the speaker so you pretty much can't reuse them either.
-
Woah! This I did not know.
-
thats weird, bit of a sh""ter when changing speakers then!
-
erm, i didnt think mine were when i got it back from the installer... but come to think of it, i dont remember seeing an screews either...

Yeh have a look at G5 91 eng.pdf p68 of 103.....

the speakerd are rivet in from new..nothing a drill can,t sort out
-
The speakers are definitely riveted... I saw this first hand when having my tints done and the fitters had to remove the interior door cards/panels.
I did think it was a bit crap, but I guess it saves on weight and production costs. None of these are helpful to the likes of us interested in upgrading the speakers...
-
Soooo...... for those who've upgraded, how did you do it?
Are there still screw points, or do you have to re-rivet?
Dan :)

when i up graded my speakers i made wooden adapters which i screwed to the door, then fastened the speaker to it..
i have seen some where you can buy adapters now for after market speakers
-
When I did my Ibiza, Autoleads didnt make adaptors, so I got some 18mm MDF and fitted my speakers on custom mounts.
It took a lot of maths as space was limited, and I've not touched my MK5 so I would advise looking at speaker dimensions and most importantly, review the amount of space you have between the door card and the window regulator plate, and the space between the other side of that plate and the window when its fully down. The last thing you want to do is smash 2 side windows on the magnets, or crush your new speakers screwing the door card back on.

Thanks all,
The thought of "damage" had crossed my mind too :embarrassed:
Will have to do some homework I think.
I was just shocked at the whole rivet aspect!!!

I'm sure it's easy - just didn't expect this LOL!! :)

haha what set have you settled for?
i have hertz energy 3 ways..

I don't have my car yet (long story - dealers are useless!!LOL! :P)
I've already got a rather pleasant 12" Kenwood Sub and JBL amp for the boot (wheel arch install)
Spec'd a Pioneer F700BT and the speakers well......
Looking at JL Audio or JBL stuff tbh. Quite like the Dynaudio stuff too.
Will also be putting a 4ch amp in.
Pretty much a total overhaul of the car lol!! :)

Did you ever get this sorted mate? What did you do about the rivets?
-
LOL - still no car. Walked away from one at the weekend.
However, as a forward plan, I'm going to change the speakers for definite. Drill out the old ones, and fit new ones with self-tappers :) To ensure it all stays in place (and to stop the drivers resonating), I'm going to use sticky rubber/foam strips.
Failing the use of self-tappers, I've got some m-bolts which can be used (bit like mini-mechano!!LOL!!)
Anyway, it's all academic as I don't have my car yet (not long though hopefully!! )

Bring this one back to life...
Just though I'd let people know that Autoleads do a Golf MK5 speaker adaptor kit for the 6.5" fronts. Makes the job a lot quicker and saves you getting the MDF + Jigsaw out.

Now I just need to find one for the 4"!

Nice one Pazz!
-
I used the Autoleads adapters and re-riveted them on. You need to use a 4.8mm rivets. Easy peasy.
-
i wish the Autoleads adapters for the speakers where about whenni changed all my speakers in my golf when i did it 5 years ago
