various densities have been used, with the most common now being 300 and 400 cells per square inch. All other dimensions being equal, converters with 100- or 200-cell densities offer improved air flow capacity, but reduced emissions control efficiency. In many cases, it's necessary to significantly lengthen a 100 cell converter to achieve the necessary levels of pollutant control. That additional length reduces flow capacity, so it's possible to end up with a 100-cell converter that does not flow as well as a 300-cell model.
Taken from a tech sheet i studied a few years ago about cats.

ahh i see, so basicly to stay emmisions compliant i need to have a higher count of cells?
is a 100 cell cat road legal or shall i go with 200 cell to be on the safe side??,
i havent definatly decided if i will be going with blueflame or miltek yet.
thanks

If the sizes of the cats are the same then a 100 cell cat will be less restrictive than a 200 cell cat but less efficient for its purpose so a 100 cell cat is often bigger or longer, which in turn can become more restrictive.
My advice would be to get a milltek, great quality, excellent backup from their dealers and unlike another manufacturer that you named they will send your parts out on time without purposely going bust and leaving their suppliers and customers out of pocket.

my 100 cell blueflame passed the first MOT fine and its not restrictive at all, its a true 3 inch all the way and doesnt have the extra back box that milltek stick on theyres. it sounds mad on full throttle too :happy2:
this vid says it all really...

MY GTI has a blue flame, 200 cel cat. And it works fine. :happy2:
