Probably the ABS cutting in, can't think of much else it could have been?

You can't turn the traction control off completely. The noise I'm sure is the traction control applying the brake to stop the wheels spinning. In reality it just leaves you stuck:(

If you were really worried about it you could pull the ABS/ESP fuse(s) and see if the noise goes away, but I wouldn't recommend doing it for road use!

Does anyone know why it makes such a noise? Surely it's only the car applying the brakes?

It is an awful noise and I'd also like to know the answer. Our mini copper s makes no noise when the traction control kicks in?
