Title: Depreciation, here we come!!! - Mines A Green one please...
Post by: DavyP on February 19, 2009, 12:43:23 pm

Well following on from the opinions on the RS Focus thread and my mulling over the possibility of buying one, I have just placed my order.

I've gone for the White with the Luxury Pack, costs a scarey amount of money for a Ford but I just took a liking to it so thought what the f...k i'll do it.  I look at people who live there life full of regrets and say they wish they did it different, well I've decided lifes for enjoying and moneys just paper so im gonna toss some away

To be honest what its costing isnt all that far off from what I could have spent on mods when you get round to lsd's, brakes, suspension, intercoolers and fuel pumps etc.

I know its not everyones cup of tea but I think it sounds good and seems to be getting very positive feed back.

Have a sound clip on me.........

good decision mate i think it looks the business  :happy2:

300 bhp and 440nm straight out the box with lsd, big brakes and what looks like a top notch suspension set up for 25k

i would never have bought an ST but this looks like in another league, if only VW had done all these differences when releasing the ED30 over the normal GTi, they couldnt even be arsed to improve the brakes  :fighting:

would easily cost £8-£10k to get the ed30 close to this bad boy

as for the badge snobs out there when this comes wizzing past you on the roads I think it will make you think twice

when is the expected pick up date?

The first allocation are sold, so the way it works is you fill in a notice of intent to buy and pay a deposit, its sent to Ford and they give you a build date, theres no demos coming to the dealer I'm buying from and they are the largest Ford dealer in my locality, looks like it could be a long wait as the first production run was delayed by a few months.  I'm gonna shift the ED30 soonish to avoid further depreciation and use the wifes Bluemotion Golf

Good on you, it'll be an absolute animal I'm sure! You're in Northern Ireland, is that right? I've driven some cracking roads over there up near Coleraine etc where you don't see a soul for miles and it's like going back in time to the old days over here. One of those is the ideal weapon for them.

Sadly I live within stealing distance of Manchester and it wouldn't stay on the drive for 2 minutes!

Yep, good roads up round Coleraine/County Antrim coast.

Going there this weekend for a relaxing spa break :embarrassed:.

I live in a village and luckily not too much crime in this area.  I have a huge German Shepherd, who although friendly, isnt too welcoming to unexpected visitors.

No way..

Coils - £700
LSD - £1200
Re-Map - £500
Cupra brakes with decent pads - £700

And it would easily be as fast round a track..

With £8-10K it would completely destroy it!!!!

They are nice indeed, I've got friends in Portrush so have battered those roads a few times. Happy days as they say!

It's a pain over here, thankfully it's virtually unheard of in the village where I live now as it's much further away, but it was in my previous town. As there's nothing worth stealing in their own sh**holes, they come travelling to the nice places and nick our stuff. An RS would stick out like a sore thumb and you'd be followed....

Tis true it could probably be done cheaper, but its nice to know the kit on the RS Focus has been extensively tested and is under warranty and issues such as clutch slip etc. shouldn't occur.

I wouldn't bet my life on it. That's what they all thought about the Nissan GT-R and it's launch control. Now they have a few lawsuits pending!! :surprised:

I think it should be fine, the reason the GTR is under so much stress is because of the 4WD and the launch control that builds boost for the launch, they have been stripping the teeth off first gear..

I inquired about an RS yesterday but they said it would be September.. I can't wait for anything so im going to see what happens when they come out, either way its going to be a very capable car from standard!

I was a bit wary that the dealers claims of the first batch being snapped up where the usual bluster, but reading various forums etc. it would seem there is quite a wait to be had as Ford is building less in the first run than was originally anticipated.  I'm really impatient too, but i'm using the delay as a chance to save up a bit so as I have to use less finance.  I own the ED 30 outright so not too far off....

The MPG doesnt worry me, wife has a company car so any lengthy runs are done in it as she gets free fuel.  I spend very little on fuel as I don't do mega mileage so the drop wont have a huge impact.  I hope......

Im expecting the MPG to make an r32 look frugal....

Parking Sensors, Rain sensors, Automatic lights, key free system,  deflation detection system, DEATC air conditioning (i dont know what it is either!) a few other minor things.   Its a £750 option pack, pricey but adds a few things for the lazy driver.  Sat Nav is an additional £750 on top of this.

Heres the press release for those with time to kill.....

From the youtube clip,  I presume the RS will be on 5th Gear on Monday .... I'll be interested in what Plato says about the RevoKnuckle Technology and how good it really is  .... they make a big play about it in the press release  :-

Quote :

According to John Wheeler, the importance of RevoKnuckle to Focus RS cannot be underestimated:

“All-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive have long been default options for managing torque in a high-performance vehicle.  We used AWD on RS models in the 80s and 90s, but it creates significant compromises in weight, fuel economy and the cost/ performance balance.  Through combined efforts of our Research and Dynamics teams, we have created a solution that simply redefines what is possible with front-wheel-drive,” he says.

Summarising the benefits of RevoKnuckle, Densing says: “RevoKnuckle gives the adjustability of a race-car style, double wishbone suspension, in a cost-effective McPherson architecture.”

not alot imo, as isnt it basically a remapped ST ? (maybe a new turbo too though, even then the ST boys with big turbos only ran at about 340)

I'm gonna stick my neck out here... if the RS's handling/grip is as good as they're making out, then the R20T better be light to try and keep up.

You might not like the image, but there could be a quantum leap here. I hope the motor isn't just a remapped ST one to save costs.

An ST is good for around 300hp with intake, exhaust and a map etc so it will be interesting to see if the RS has the same potential 75hp increase available from similar mods, which would make it no more potent than a similarly modded ED30..

if you watch the video on fords website, the chap states its got a bigger turbo and all new engine internals to cope with the power - it is not just a simple remap.

It's hugely different to the ST engine. Totally new block made from a new material. The problem with the ST engine is that it's just a bored out 2.3T Volvo engine and not the T5 one as is commonly assumed. By boring it out, they massively weakened the cylinder walls meaning they go pop when you start turning up the turbo. You can not safely or reliably go above about 320 at the moment. I come from a Focus forum where there have already been a few unfortunate incidents and dubious warranty claims. I'm not disputing that you can't get 340 from an ST 5pot, but you're running on borrowed time. Apparently the RS engine is much stronger, so perhaps it does stand a chance of keeping up with jonny's ED30...

i doubt they made a new block for the RS so it must be borrowed from another model (poss Volvo), any ideas where its from

The old T5 engine / block from the 850R was super strong as far as I know, could be using that..
Title: Re: Depreciation, here we come!!!
Post by: animal on February 20, 2009, 02:37:53 pm
It's definitely an upgraded component, cast from stronger stuff. Like the difference between the S3 head and the GTi one.

As jonny says, it's possible its from a higher spec volvo, the S60R maybe. Although, if it's just being cast from stronger stuff, there'd be no need to retool a new mould, so the cost implications wouldn't be too high for a short run of stronger blocks. Or it might be stronger liners.

The old RS Focus had bespoke components and was built in much smaller volumes - there's no reason why the RS wouldn't have bespoke beefed up components? I had some info about the new engine somewhere, I will try and find the link when I get home.

Should be a fun car though, I'm looking forward to trying one out.

EDIT:

Data from a man on the inside. Ford has updated their parts catalogue... (the numbers don't correspond to the actual turbos, that's just the designation of the engine)

Part no.s for engine blocks:

220ps turbo finis 1388501

300ps turbo finis 1757123

One source says he's sure it's different material as on the S60R, the other thinks it's fundamentally the same block but with uprated liners.

Based on part numbers, these appear to be the other major differences, some obviously go without saying!

Inlet Camshaft
Con-rods and pistons
Main and big end bearings
Head gasket
Injectors
Turbo - still some debate over this as apparently some data suggests it the same one
Inter-cooler
Exhaust system
Fuel pump
Radiator

There is a lot that they do share though. Inlet is the same, exhaust cams, crank shaft, oil pump, water pump to name a few.

What happens when you select second gear and give it full beans in the RS frankly feels like some form of miracle, because even on a rough or wet surface the car takes off without drama, feeling for all the world as if it is four, not two-wheel drive. Considering how much raw thrust there is – Ford claims 0-60mph in 5.9sec, 0-100mph in 14sec dead and a top speed of 163mph – it’s quite weird to begin with. You even wonder whether they’re fibbing about how many wheels are being driven.

Yes it looks a lot more 'hardcore' than the GTI/Ed30 but the Ford simply doesn't compete in being a 5-door all-rounder. Judging by your various comments in the forums, Phil, I can't see wifey agreeing to the RS but I think she'd be right regarding your family usage.

....Absolutely so! The trouble is that use of the term "classy" is often misinterpreted as badge snobbery. But it need not have anything to do with snobbery at all - It just means that the 'classy' car looks more reserved and less in-yer-face. Social standing is a factor and we all initially judge by appearances - It's a part of our natural survival instincts (and helps our choice in which female to chase etc).

The new RS is doubtless a truly great performance car but no Ford is ever "classy". Ford GT40 or Ferrari? Which is classier?

The classiness hierarchy puts Audi above VW above Skoda above Ford, though the Ford RS might be above Skoda.

I think that was a good way to put it.

The RS is never going to perceived as classy as generally only those with a bit of interest in performance cars will  appreciate what it is.  The rest will find out exactly what it can do when out of ignorance they try to tailgate and overtake and get handed their ass on a plate. :signLOL:

....That's exactly it! The RS doesn't actually need to aspire to any 'classiness', it's an out-n-out performance car for enthusiasts but also one which isn't a handful.

I mentioned to the wife i'm changing, you'd swore I said to her that i'd sh@gged her sister by her reaction!

Looks like something quite special this thing but a well modded ED30 will give it a few things to think about

Oh, and did I hear it does 0-60 in 5.9 seconds? How does that compare with a similar power ED30?

I have been trying to figure out my 0-60 time from Santa Pod.. This calculator is pretty accurate in terms of the times I achieved on the day.. And this says that I was at about 4.6 0-60.. I think a high 4 second run would be achievable in reality..

So, are Ford being coy and understating it... or is it a bit lardy and not capable of more?

Thats pretty much what Steve Sutcliffe said in the Autocar review..

To be honest, it should (and will) be faster than that.. 300hp & 330ft/lbs.. Not sure how heavy it is though?

I'm looking at the RS as a blank canvas, its pulling those figures as standard, £500 on a remap alone should see a marked improvement, and although Johnnys car is an exception, I'd imagine the majority of modded ed30s would struggle with the RS as standard never mind with a remap.

:signLOL: look at me defending the car ive only got a deposit on....... :ashamed:

I think my suggestion about them being coy may well have some truth in it.. They seem to be not saying much and waiting for all the Journos to talk it up.

Nice marketing ploy. Understate a very anticipated car, hand the keys over to a few important players and let them do the selling for you... it'll become a legend before one even appears on the road.

I can't wait for a go in one.

Thats what im really looking forward to seeing, how much can be had out of the standard engine / turbo with bolt on parts and re-maps etc etc.. If its 370+ then its going to be an attractive prospect..

In one of the vids in this thread the lead designer was suggesting that the car is certainly capable of handling more than 300bhp so it is as you've said going to be interesting to see what the tuners come up with.

Ford havent really confirmed the 0-60 time as fact so perhaps it is some kind of ploy, worked on me :signLOL:

I've just been having a sniff about and can't find much about the "bling" I can see it has uprated brakes over the ST, but what - Brembos like the MKI RS? etc etc..

Is there somewhere linked with all the spec & details?

as I said in another thread the 0-60 doesnt match the power/torque output and any reasonable weight, so it points to a reduced output in lower gears (or a high 1st gear?)
RS std like you say has potential
modded ED30 is flawed unless you get ALL the areas of deficiency sorted (suspension/LSD/brakes)
whether the RS has much 'headroom' who knows as yet
At the mo I like it, but id prefer jonnyc's

....Seems very much that way to me too :happy2:

Naturally, I'm interested/pleased to see they have chosen a Quaife mechanical diff for the RS rather than electronic like the forthcoming Mk6 GTI.

flawed but still awesome RR

That RS runs on 95 RON ! how did they manage that? 2.5l lower compression I guess? It states that the fuel consumption is taken on 95RON. dunno about the output figures BUT usually you get better mpg on 98+ ?

ED30 maps will run on 95RON but its not recommended and it certainly reduces output considerably.

btw 440 Nm = 325 lbs/ft in old money. Def need to see a power plot for this baby

Blue one for me :happy2:

Weighs in at 1467kg according to the 'net. A guide at best.

Also, has 336 vented fronts on a single piston caliper - the MKI had 325mm 4-pot Brembos. They've skimped a bit here and with 35% more power and ??kg more weight than the MKI, have they given it a weak link?...

Annoyingly though, it's the only thing I can pull it up on that isn't subjective/cosmetics.

it sounds like the car suffers with bad turbo lag, but the journo's have said it helps putting the power down!. WTF!!. drinks like a fish by the sounds of it. 15mpg sounds like a good town mpg, if the old ST  was getting 18-20. :surprised:

....Do any modern cars still suffer from turbo lag nowadays?? :surprised:

I think Plato was saying that the lag gave a welcome opportunity in exiting corners - I don't quite understand that unless you mash the throttle and keep it mashed down.

Anyone else on here ordered one of these yet????

They seem to be selling well, Ive even heard of people profiting from selling their order on.

I won't be selling mine, Frozen White, Lux Pack and Bluetooth.  Reviews have been fantastic and the demand bodes well for future values.

I'm excited. :jumpmove:

I find it difficult to believe it torque steers with Quaife ATB diff.

Which journo's claim it torque steers?

I think one reviewer mentioned a slight torque steer, but he was a kinda puny lookin fella.

The general consensus is that it handles brilliantly and 4wd would have spoilt it.

I'm gonna have to stop biggin this car up as i'm in danger of becoming a "fanboy".  The positive reviews have really got me looking forward to it, albeit I don't think i'll get a sniff of it until September at the earliest.

....I can well understand that. 4WD/quattro cars have very safe roadholding within the extreme limit but just don't have that tactile edge.

Well done Dave,

It’s the colour I would choose, awesome car buddy  :happy2: :happy2:
