i think you turn it of if your stuck so the wheels spin to get you out without the brakes cutting power to the wheels that are spinning, but leave it on whilst driving in snow as it will help with controling the car if it starts to slide about.

i leave it on, i think it does a really good job of limiting the wheel spin and keeping the revs constant
