Although I've only had these tyres fitted for half a day, I thought it might be useful for people who are trying to justify investing in a set of cold weather tyres for their car.
Why?
The winter weather in the UK seems to be getting worse year on year. I personally love snow, however I don't want it to rule my life. Previous snowy spells have meant I was reluctant to use my car, which in turn has impacted on my work and social life. I see my car as a tool, and it's attractiveness comes from it's ability to handle anything I throw at it, be it chauffeuring myself and three friends from one end of the country to the other, or providing the thrills on a back road thrash. The profile of winter, or cold weather tyres has been raised significantly in the past year or two, both in the media, and on forums like this, and as I now have a spare set of wheels I decided to have them fitted with a pair of tyres more suitable to colder temperatures.
My plan is to run them from late November to the end of March, weather permitting. With the mileage I do I hope to get 4 or 5 winters out of them, so a sound investment I think.
Which tyre?
Having used, and been impressed by Vredestein tyres in the past my aim was to buy the Wintrac tyre, however at nearly £170 per corner the cost was prohibitive. Although I hadn't heard of the brand, the Nankang Snow SV-2 tyre seemed to review very well on several sites. As the cost was reasonable I decided to purchase them.
Cost
I ordered from Mytyres at a cost of £78 per tyre (225/45 R17 94V XL), including fitting which was carried out in their usual professional manner by IDS Mobile Tyre Fitters. I should note that 2 days following my order these tyres had rocketed to £136 per tyre. That's supply and demand!
Any good?
It's been said before, but the difference between summer tyres and winter tyres in cold, wet conditions is night and day. Having spent the past few days tiptoeing around on 18" Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas I was in a good position to judge exactly how different they are, over a variety of different conditions, including fresh powdery snow, hard packed snow, and wet slush. On several occasions I attempted to break traction and trigger the ESP, which proved very difficult indeed. In fact grip and breaking in all conditions was incredible, and the noise levels are not noticeably different to the Ultrac Sessantas. In an effort to see exactly how good they are I attempted a steep hill near my house that is very rarely used by other cars in the snow, and is not gritted. The car sailed up as if there was no snow at all.
So at this point I have nothing negative to say about them. If you're apprehensive about using your car in the snow I'd urge you to try them. I hope to update this review when I'd have the chance to drive them in drier conditions also.

Thanks for the review, winter tyres really are amazing; I've got a set of Vredestein Snowtracs on my winter wheels that make life so much easier when it gets colder - no need to pussyfoot around.

Thanks Pete. I think at the price I paid you can't really argue, however right at this moment prices have gone through the roof. If you wanted a tyre from one of the premium brands you wouldn't get much change from £200 per tyre.

ive had these fitted today as well. very good tyre IMO, and thats considering for the last 9 years ive been using either vredestein snowtrac and wintrac winter tyres which are widely considered the best winter tyres.
the biggest gain i have noticed is before, on the snow if i tapped the brakes they locked up instantly, obvioulsy not a good trait to have, now you can really brake hard and they wont skid unless you really mash the brake pedal hard.
the only frustrating thing about winter tyres is others who dont have them blocking your way and really slowing you down

I'm considering getting a winter wheel/tyre setup but I have left it a bit late and tyre selection/stocks are getting smaller by the day.

It's almost becoming a game finding the steepest, most snow covered hill, and driving up it with no problem whatsoever. I'm managing far better than some 4x4 vehicles I've seen.
I'll get some tread photos up as soon as the weather is more amicable. As far as noise is concerned, it's not noticeably different to any other tyre I've driven.

I might be wrong here, but I'm guessing Mytyres are heavily effected by the main distributers and manufacturers. I doubt the inflation in the cost is solely down to them.

That in itself is a good result AP :congrats:
I might have to invest in some of these once I've price hunted.
Are you going to keep them in any particular conditions till next winter once you've put your everyday tyres back on?

Do you know if they supply these tyres in 18's? I'm thinking that it might be an excuse to use my powdercoated Monza 18's from November til March, although I never venture out in the snow anyway.

Cheers Robin. They do the SV-1 Winter Plus in 225/40 R18 92V XL. I'm not sure of the differences over the SV-2 that I have.
I drove straight up a hill last night, and past a Freelander that had got itself into a little bother. It was a laugh out loud moment...... then I realised I should have probably helped them out :ashamed:

Just feel gutted that I have left it too late for me to do something about it . Cost V supply and demand is the issue as well as I would like a second pair of wheels to keep them on . I hate this site some times > I always want , want and it keeps costing me money .
I am still looking for a second pair of wheels and hopefully demand and cost will drop in the new year .

Same as Im using. Used Avon winters last year on my 4motion Golf, only 6ft drifts could stop that. These are good yet they do seem to have a little less traction than the Avons however strangely the braking grip is outstanding compared to the Avons but thats probably down to the different cars.

well kent is literally under about a foot of snow everywhere, its absolute carnage. have to say, im really impressed with the SV-2's.
Even with deep snow, the wheels are spinning trying to gain grip, but it just keeps going and going. there are now only 3 cars at the top of our street. 2 of them haven't been moved since it snowed and then theres mine. everyone else has parked at the bottom. says it all IMO

I no longer have my Monza 17s and my batcave garage is fully loaded so no room for a third set of wheels - I've even got a pair of tyres in my entrance hall!

....Thanks for the compliment but winters aren't so harsh down here in <soft southern shandy drinkers land> and I wouldn't be venturing out in the snow anyway - I'm very lucky because unlike many who work I don't have to.
If my Monza's were still diamond-cut I'd be in real trouble again - Road salt is their enemy.

Was going to get a set of these fitted on Saturday but got quoted a price of £148 quite a price increase on what i was quoted earlier in the week so i just decided to get some Conti Sport 3's instead at £123.
Next year im going to get myself a set of 17'' Monza 1's.
I just cant see how the tyre distributors are getting away with putting the price's up so much!!! Ok fair enough if the manufacturers are but places like mytyre etc probably had a fair few of these in stock bought and paid for way before the snow hit.

Supply & demand is the reason. After last winter, there was always going to be more interest in winter rubber this time around. I got my Vredestein Wintracs in September, at £130 per corner (225/45 18), so my winter wheels were ready & waiting. Frankly I'm not surprised at the price rise now.

Similar story here. I was being quoted £170 for my Wintracs (225/45/18 94V) bbut noehad any stock. Ii evntually manged a deal of £145 each with wheels, but even that was a bit more than I had seen earlier in the year. What load rating is the golf? is it 91 or 94? I saw the 91 rating tyres going for quite a bit less than the 94's and wheelbase still had some left

Now the weather has improved I thought I'd give a further appraisal of the Nankang Snow SV-2 tyres.
In snow, ice and slush these tyres never ceased to amaze me, so driving them in drier conditions has given me a chance to rate them from a totally different perspective. The temperature has been approximately 6 - 7°C recently, and the roads have varied from wet/greasy to fully dry. I've found that the tyres struggle for grip under hard acceleration in first and second gear. It's all too easy to trigger the ESP light, something I found very hard to do even in snow! My car has the standard power output, so this would be magnified on a remapped car.
Secondly, they have absolutely no rim protection edge. They actually appear to sit inside the rim edge slightly. This isn't of much a concern for me because I have them on my winter wheels, which I've long since given up being careful with, but it might be worth considering if you're putting them on wheels you value.

They only struggle if you floor it. Ive been driving with then and not had any issues. Yes they move about slightly more but if I tried doing the same type of driving with my normal tyres Id have been in the ditch by now. Thats on wet / greasy roads.

I don't think I'd buy a tyre without rim protection for my summer wheels, simply because accidents do happen. I'd never intentionally put my wheels in a situation where the tyre protector is needed, but I'd prefer to play safe.
As for the lack of grip, it horses for courses. If I was running a summer tyre I'd be slipping around in the snow, putting myself and others in danger. I'd be disappointed if they had been billed as an all-seasons tyre, but they're not. These are a good compromise, short of changing my wheels each day to suit the road conditions.

I long time ago I bought a Celica GT4 import that was a great car. The only problem/shock I had when I bought the car is that the tyres were Nankang snow tyres! I bought the car in March and frankly the car was unuseable at 10-12 degrees! It was a complete handful. To cut a long story short they were left on from when it was imported from Japan (I got the dealer to change them in the end).
The point I learnt from all this, is that winter tyres are designed for those tricky cold icy circumstances but not for much else. :smiley:

But do we need to consider any differences between what the tyre manufacturers call "winter tyres" and what they call "snow tyres"?
It seems that these Nankangs are excellent in the snow and ice but very poor in just wet and greasy conditions.

I can only comment on my experiences but they were very unstable, even in the dry at the above temperatures!
Note they were the same as Andrew's "Nankang Snow SV-2 tyres"

I wouldn't go that far, in fact cornering is actually very good. I guess a Celica GT4 is a very different beast to the Golf though. You do have to really boot it to lose any traction, and the ESP is quite sensitive on a Golf.

I've been using some Acellera Apollo winter tyres for the last week on the other halfs 1 series, and they are better than summer tyres in the wet greasy conditions, of course the weather has been at its warmest since we fitted them :smiley:, may get a chance to test them this weekend :happy2:

It was in the spring when I had them and it was at least 12 degrees :happy2: I am sure they are more than capable in the temperatures we have now.

The difference is merely in they tread pattern. they are winter tyres plain and simple. Absolutely no issues with mine at all in the wet, dry, greasy, slush or the snow. Obviously when it comes to dry or wet, they will never compare to the grip of the summer tyres.

This is the first time ive used winter tyres other than Vredestein wintrac/snowtrac (widely regarded as the #1), and even then i used to change them over for my summers as soon as it warmed up as they dont have the ultimate grip in the wet/dry for when your booting it in a powerful car.
winter tyres are designed for working when its cold and or snowing etc. If your driving fast your obviously being stupid imo

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not talking about driving fast, or dangerously. I merely talking about 75 - 90% throttle in conditions I would otherwise find perfectly fine with summer tyres.
Driving stupidly is not something I do. Full stop.

i got told at work the apollo tyres are made by vredestein but i can't be sure but all the reports i get of the ones i have fitted say they are excellent

Been cutting about in pretty deep 6+ inches fresh snow through all th wback streets today trying to bypass the traffic on the main routes, and they havent had one issue whatso ever.
Even over took a 4wd Merc SUV up a hill after he had held the traffic up for about 3 hours

I have Avon Ice Touring ST tyres on my golf and I cannot beleive the difference. In the snow they are brilliant and when it is cold and icy the grip so much better than my summer tyres. No wheel spin and the car feels like it really gripping. Even the slightest up hill gradient in the snow it would stop my car before and now it will go up every hill I have come across.
I cannot recommend fitting winter tyres enough.

I've never turned off ESP when using them, but saying that I've never seen the light come on either, in the snow anyway. They don't break traction very easily at all when the weather is cold or snowy.

i always had ESP on on my vRS with winter tyres on. i actually thought the ESP was brilliant in the snow. You could bury the throttle and it would keep the revs below 1500rpm iirc ensuring you didnt spin up. as son as you turn it off the torque just lights wheels up in the snow.
The thing to note about the ESP its not just traction control. its also stability control so if you start sliding it helps out by applying the brakes where required etc

Yup :happy2: Recognised Sy. I've personally not driven with these tyres on - was simply curious whether ESP in general got in the way of executing a clean start on a hill when traction on snow is at a premium.

Hi all, as I've now taken these off the car I thought it might be appropriate to conclude my review.
It was always my intention to keep these tyres on the car for 4 months. In retrospect I would probably have put them on earlier, and taken them off sooner, however the weather is impossible to foresee and the snow that we had over Christmas and into the New Year didn't reappear like many predicted.
My initial first impressions hold true, these tyres are simply awesome in snow, however when the weather turned wet and the roads greasy I became a little concerned that these tyres broke traction too easily. Fortunately these worries were short-lived. I can only put it down to the tyres scrubbing in, because I have had not one similar issue in any sort of road condition. They grip very well regardless of road surface. Now temperatures have risen the only noticeable difference is the nose pushing slightly wider when attacking a corner.
Wear on the tyres is negligible too - in fact it's difficult to tell if they've worn at all. I think I'll certainly get 4 or more years use out of them, so in that respect they represent very good value for money.

Been driving in Germany for years with winter tyres - makes a world of difference.
Even big expensive cars use steel wheels for them to avoid corrosion problems.
As for summer tyres, you get what you pay for.

Ran these through the worst last winter threw at us, they were brilliant. And the bonus is there's stacks of tread so they'll be good for a few more yet.
Worth it just to see the face of the bloke digging his RAV4 out of a foot of snow in the supermarket car park when I just jumped in to the GTI & cleared off. Priceless :grin:

OK just fitted these to the car today so thought I'd give my first impressions after a 6 mile hoon round the county roads where I live.
In reading this you must bear in mind that its a balmy 14 deg here today (so well outwith the optimal temperature range for these tyres) and that they are fresh out of the packet with no bedding in at all.
On pulling out of my street it was clear that these have a slightly vauge feeling compared to the PS3's I've just taken off and that they seem to give a slightly softer ride (still extra load rated). They are also much quieter which surprised me. Given the temperature and the fact they're brand new I was pretty gentle to start off with but although the feeling isn't quite as confidence inspiring there was no hint of oversteer as I built up the speed.
To test out their traction when applying the beans I sat in second with the revs sitting at 2.5k for a couple of seconds then floored it. No drama whatsoever, no traction control kicking in, no pull in any direction other than straight ahead. There was a split second of squirrely feel about the steering but it was blink and you miss it.
By now my confidence with these things was increasing so I was chucking it more and more enthusiastically into corners and using the accelerator with gusto. Much more spirited driving than I do on a day to day basis. Again absolutely no drama, although they don't 'feel' as planted as the michelins the car went exactly where I wanted with no understeer or any hint the back wanted to do anything untowards.
The only significant adverse behavior I noticed was that I felt braking wasn't as sharp as it had been with the michelins from high speed. I expect this to get better as the tyres bed in and the temperature drops.
Based on this first impression, especially considering the temperature it is today, I'm delighted that I bought these tyres and look forward to seeing what they can do when the real winter weather gets here.
Like Andrew has done I intend to update this as time goes on.

No Typo mate! For the misses A4 Avant. 235 is the OEM size. I looked at fitting 225's on it for the winter but i couldnt get them with a 97 load rating so had to stick with the OEM 235's :happy2:

Just ordered a set of these in 235/45 R17 97V Flavour - was a bit apprehensive at first but glad to read andrews conclusion review.
Hopefully once they get fitted they will be up to the job!
Is 235 a typo? won't you have some issues with rubbing?
I thought most people try and go down a size when using winter/cold weather tyres?
No Typo mate! For the misses A4 Avant. 235 is the OEM size. I looked at fitting 225's on it for the winter but i couldnt get them with a 97 load rating so had to stick with the OEM 235's :happy2:
I see......my A4 avant (05) runs on 235/40/18 95Y, I spoke with Audi about running 225/45/17 94V XL winter tyres and they said that these were acceptable as they are winter tyres

if you are thinking snow tyres buy them sooner rather than later . i ordered 2 weeks ago and just checked my tyres .co .uk and they have gone up in price by £11 per tyre

I've a set of the these sv2's sitting in my shed since September! I haven't fitted them yet as the weather hasn't dropped below 10 degrees yet. I'd say the next few weeks I'll get them on. That's great to hear that even at this temp they ain't bad! The mechanic I use had them on his s4 last year and said they were fantastic! Looking forward to trying them out in some snow now :laugh:

Gah! Ordered my vredestein wintrac xtremes two weeks ago and they've still not arrived! I'm concerned they'll never arrive, cancel the order and I'll have to go elsewhere and pay more. Meanwhile my sister's winter tyres (from a different company) arrived three working days after ordering.

Was that with clickontyres? I was looking for normal tyres on the site and notice that they are advertising M&S tyres for pre-order, so maybe they're not in stock yet? Although it'd be bad if you weren't advised of that when ordering.
Might be worth ringing the bloke up if you're concerned, if you haven't already done so.

Yes it was clickontyres. Emailed them last week and they said my order had missed the last shipment from Vredestein. Hence my order would have to shipped separately and should arrive with me this week. If it doesn't, I'm contemplating cancelling them and going elsewhere.

Mytyres took about two weeks to deliver. And lost two tyres in the process but thats a different story...

My tyres .co.uk was approx 2 weeks delivery on mine with dpd courier. checked again tonight and they have gone up again by £3 per tyre . the nankang sv2s were still pretty cheap tho

I put mine on this weekend, agree it's a tad early but I think they are harder wearing than they used to be.
I recall last year being caught out and putting them on in the dark, in the onset of a snowstorm!

Picked up 2 of these from the couriers yesterday for the 30 :happy2: got them from My tyres took a week to come going to put then on once weather gets Sh*t :driver:

With the bad weather starting again I thought I may bump this thread as I found it during a search and found it very useful.
I am now running Nankang SV2 in 205/55 R16 94V XL ,cost me £228.20 for 4 supplied by mytyres

This is my third winter running these tyres and one thing that has surprised me is the wear rate, which appears to be zero. Initially I had hoped to get at least 4 years use from them, but I can see it being much more. Value-wise they are looking like an amazing investment.

^^ A good sign Andrew. They're really fairly good in the wet (mild conditions). Not had any proper ice or snow to try them on yet, ironically the first year I buy them I wonder if we'll miss all the white stuff in the Midlands?!

I just stick them in the cellar Nasir. Drop the tyre pressure and put them in some VW wheel bags, then they just lie flat on the floor. Exactly the same for my summer wheels when I have the winters on.

I read advice in various places, but the general consensus was that they should be stored on their sides (not stacked), with around 1.0 bar of pressure in them, in a room that is cool and dry. The tyres should also be clean and free of any dressings etc. Luckily I've managed to tick all those boxes.
