Been planning to get an S3 in the new year, so I was just wondering, now its snowy, how they perform in the snow?
The Golf is ok in the conditions but if you get someone who cant drive in front, it can be hard to get going again! I suppose a lot depends on what tyres your running.
Living at the top of a hill is not always best!!
Been looking at S3 for a while, going to sell my golf, get a car from work till I find the right one.

My old shape S3 was amazing in the snow. I remember a few years ago towing a Renault 21 up a steep snow covered hill without problems
My mk5 Golf GTI was crap in the snow so there really is no comparison

There are benefits from living on top of a hill , flooding springs to mind as a starter. wind is good for drying the washing

but not so good for landslides :signLOL:

I dont know I would rather be on the top of a hill with a landslide than at the bottom of a hill that has a landslide! :P
No personal experience but S3 will not only shift power between front and rear wheels in snowy and icy conditions but the proper diff will do a better job of side to side power movement. Although my preference would be a fully mechanical quattro system.
I assume we are talking with equivalent tyres, as good as quattro can be it still cant get rubber to grip on sheet ice

not really a fair comparison any 4wd car should be better at most things than a fwd, the s3 is a great car but i need a 5 dr and cant afford a sportback yet!
-
except on a dry track when the lighter better balanced equivalent FWD car will spank it
-
My old S3 was the best car for most things like tough icy conditions and powering round corners in the wet but it doesn't feel as refined as my MK5

Loves the snow. I was the only one who got out the car park at work. It will slip, boosting while moving at 5mph is comical :signLOL:

The S3 would be FWD in the dry with more power :P

I see what you mean jules , struggling to skake off a clio :chicken:
-
The Clio is a great car and I've seen vids of them making 911 drivers doing the same thing. The driver of that particular one is a bit of an idiot, though, stopping like that. He nearly got collected by the 3rd white car following!
-
Fortunately for the driver and passenger it was the S3 that crashed. The Clio would have self destructed at the merest hint of hitting that barrier. :signLOL:
