Thanks

whats wrong with water?
-
Sorry if this is a stupid question but can you just put water in? I thought there would be some special liquid from VW... :ashamed:
-
its a mixture of water and coolant/anti-freeze but if your just topping it up water wil be fine i believe
-
I was told that the additives used in modern Anti Freeze Mixture (AF) not only combats the liquid freezing at low temperatures but also contains rust inhibitors and also raises the boling point of the water. I'm told that a tiny amount of water is OK, but any more than that could possibly dilute the AF in the car and alter it's protective properties.
But then it could be a load of old bull just to get us to buy the more expensive anti freeze ?
-
topping up the header tank from just below minimum just use water, if you need to put more in then you could end up diluting the concentration and lessening your anti-freeze protection. :happy2:
-
Thank you all for your replies... :happy2: it does only need topping up but I would probably need to keep some anti-freeze in the garage just incase I need some. Is there a recommended anti-freeze from VW?

yeah has to be the G12 VW stuff only or crappy stuff will rot the head.
got a 1.5 litre bottle off e bay from Lincoln Audi last week for about £13.00 , just put vw g12 into google and should lead you to e bay page

I would rather just get it from the dealers, I dont mind paying a bit more its just less hassle. Is it premixed with water or do you have to mix it yourself...
-
its all in german on the back but i think you have to mix it with water as the diagram shows the ratio fo g12 to water to give protection down to a certain temperature eg siberia = loads more g12, i only bought it for topping up purposes so have not had need to mix it.

it ain't dear from stealers, I got a 1litre bottle for topping up for about £8 genuine VAG and good peace of mind

Yep, picked some up from VW :happy2:
-
Yes but the question is did you go G12 or G12 plus plus??
If you bought it from VW then I would guess the latter.

Sounds like a good excuse to get a ported and flowed head with big valves and trick cams!
I'll keep putting the Halfords stuff in :P

If you need an excuse that badly, I can come round with my new HSS drill set and drill some shiny new holes all over your cylinder head... then you'll HAVE to get a new one

bluecol and prestone make universal coolant for any car mixes with all types of coolant
