Title: Water Pump Change Necessary?
Post by: jsklair on December 08, 2010, 12:34:24 pm
I need to get my camblet changed, and have been advised by VW to get my waterpump changed at the same time.

My car's four and half years old, and has covered 44,000 miles.

My question is:  Is the water pump change necessary?

I can get the cambelt done by itself for £299, and with the water pump the best price I found was £399.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

You should have ordered all your parts from Dave Hawthorne on here and got an independant to fit them.
I got the timing belt kit, water pump,LL Oil,filter and sump plug for less than £160.

pumps have been known to leak after everything else has changed for a belt change.
So instead of risking doing the job twice (and taking all the new stuff off again) its recommended.

I had to pay for my pump (£60) from dealer when rest was a warranty job for a squeaking idler/belt.

if it were me Id get it changed  :happy2:

(heres one of the threads on here about it : http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,10091.0.html)

I know its a Touran but the principal is the same.

My Tech who has his own business just charged me for parts and no labour as he was doing the cambelt anyway.

He is VW trained.

He also fitted a metal impeller(?) version non oem as he said the oem plastic ones were sh*t.

They can shear and leave the plastic impeller not spinning.

VW could have changed the design by now or the GTI may be different.

Like I said take this with a pinch of salt as its a Touran.

........i hade mine changed with the cambelt but an extra 100.00 quid on top is a bit steep. As above i think waterpump is under 60.00 & once old belt is off it's only a couple of bolts to remove, i would hagle on the price mate  :happy2:.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have decided to get the water pump replaced at the same time.

The best price I could find all in, was £399.

Two of my local independents wanted around £450.

And my local VW dealer, VW Slough (Windrush) wanted £540.  Great value there.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
