I have been using the standard 18-55mm lens for a while now on a 450D and the time has come to use a telephoto lens for some portrait and distance shots.
I would prefer to stay with Canon for full compatibility etc.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

That lens gets a good write up and I like the features that are listed. But why do the prices vary so much? One retailer wants £629 and the other £349 for exactly the same lens???? :scared:
Do you have any sample shots?

That i have a camera that takes great shots is not the same as i can take great shots :xmassmiley:
I'm a lousy photographer sorry. my old lens broke and i'm not interested in swapping lenses all the time so chose this, as it's enough for normal use and also covers when i want to take track shots.
I haven't really taken any shots with it yet sorry.

First thing we need to know is.... BUDGET?
-
On a budget go for the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom AF Lens, I've got it and i'm very impressed, gets great reviews and the IS works really well! £152.95 on amazon at the mo!

When buying camera
porn equipment don't forget to use http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ to compare prices.

Thanks all. Having read some reviews they all seem to quote that if you have paid a fair amount for an slr then it would be false economy to go for the cheapest lens. This makes sense to me so I am looking at lens that are good value without exceeding the price of the camera. I don't want a white lens as they make you look like a walking target!
I don't mind too much about changing lenses as long as it the lens itself isn't too big/heavy to carry around.

Thats probably the best one... without going stupid price wise!
-
I am looking at the below lenses following your recommendations:
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens (390g) - Approx £150
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens (630g) - Approx £350
Other than the obvious focal length/weight and price differences what else would I be getting for the extra £200?
-
Extra 50mm focal length and i think that the 70-300 is better glass that the 55-250!
-
i use the 70-300 on my nikon for all the motorsport photography i do. love it and great VFM.
Still want a new lens next year tho!
-
I am saving for the 70-200 f/4.0 L IS USM. Well i say saving, but have got nowhere yet. :sad1:
-
TC,
I wouldn't worry too much about the IS, I have the non IS version and love it.

Nice cock.
It's just for extra flexibility, while still learning. I have a 50 f 1.4 non IS and although it's fast i nearly always have to use it wide open when not on a tripod or bump up the ISO. :happy2:

Those 70-200 F4 lenses are incredibly sharp!
-
Just to point out that the lens-specific flickr groups are a great resource for lens
lusting choosing. Do you need zoom? My favourite Canon lens is the 100mm macro. It's a lovely portrait lens.

I have the f/1.8mm Nifty Fifty and for the money it is one hell of a lens.
