Title: Possible stupidity on the way
Post by: johnboy07 on December 14, 2010, 08:30:01 pm
Im contemplating doing the clutch change on my golf. Am i being a tad stupid. On previous cars i have done almost everything. Im not worried about undertaking the work and hopeing to save myself some money. Apart from stripping the car, removing driveshafts ect Are there any other bits i should be aware of.

Will the clutch need adjusting. do i need vcds for anything.

Also does the gearbox come away without dropping an engine mount to lower that side to slide the gearbox off the locators.

Or should i stop being tight and pay a garage.

I find the mk5 platform harder to work on than most other cars with gearbox related work.

If Youv got a pretty good mechanical mind then go for it no vag com or adjusting needed as it's hydraulic

ooo lovely. i may even take some photos to help people if there also feel crazy in the future. Just cant justify paying someone else if i could probably do it myself. Also i have a few mechanics as friends, which i could ask for help if i get stuck.

Will wait for a while though as my clutch hasnt slipped for a while now. weirdly it slipped at stage one and now im stage 2+ it hasnt.

think i will be buying a haynes manual just in case

Dave, have you ever done a box/clutch change on a mk4 Ibiza Cupra? Feck its tight, box needs to come out at a stupid angle. Even with a engine mount off its very tight....

Yeh go for it! You'll be in a better position to know if it's doable once you're doing it.  Lol

Best of luck to you.

The guys at vwr must have it down to a fine art as I have seen them take a box it pretty quick. Done a few in my time but always had to loosen up the engine mounts just gives you that little bit room/give you need

lol not something you would attempt the joe.

Is a little crazy but most things on cars are simple enough with the right tools and some know how. seem confident now. we shall soon see how much of a good idea this is.

I would do my own clutch if I had a ramp/4 poster, its not something I would do on my back on the drive on axle stands

Same as no problem but not on the drive in the snow!

I have a few times  :rolleye: sat the gearbox on top of a jack and jacked it up on to the side of the engine  :rolleye:
