Hi all, go easy on me, first post :rolleye:
Had my 2007 GTi for just over three months, generally very happy with it, BUT, wanted to ask folk on here what sort of oil consumption do you get?
Reason I'm asking is the oil warning light (again) has illuminated only 1000 miles after I topped up (only half a litre as I wanted to monitor the consumption). All my miles are motorway miles, and I don't drive too mad being mature and sensible and all that. That seems excessive to me, but maybe I'm using the wrong method of monitoring??
Car has cover 65k miles and has a third party warranty (wasn't purchased at a VW dealer)...any thoughts before I contact the local stealers??
Had a search round but couldn't find anything on the forum, cheers!!

VW says as long as it doesn't use more than 1litre every 600miles its ok.
Mine did use a lot at one point when I first got it but after a few thousand miles it got better.
-
My old GTI used to use about half a litre every 500/1000 miles, I was worried to start with but others confirmed there cars were similar! :happy2:
-
Yeah mine goes from full to min in 2000-2500 miles, it's awful to be honest.
-
Anything up to 1 litre per 600 mile is classed as acceptable. Touch wood after 5 years and 46,000 miles, mine has stopped burning anything. Mine has been on max since April this year
In the time before that I've used 1.2 liters in top ups, 700ml of that was within the first 10,000 miles.

I have found that if i only fill the oil to halfway on the dipstick then it lasts a bit longer.
But as with others it definately uses a lot of oil. In 64k miles i have gone through about 25 litres of oil (not including servicing)
-
Better replace the oil than the engine....hey ho!
-
what oil regime has the car been on?
What spec of oil?
it may also be worthwhile making sure the PCV system is working ok , and maybe replace the valve.
-
I'm on the Long Life service...but I think becoz I have the BSH PCV Fix...essentially a blanking plate the oil doesn't get recirculated. This may account for the increased oil consumption.
Any opinions on this?
-
Why are you on the longlife service Mojo?
All GTIs should be on Time and Distance.
-
my 05 gti doesnt seem to use any between services, i cant remember the last time i needed to top it up and i check it weekly.

Sorry, that's what I meant.

My '05 (100k motorway miles) needed a new PCV valve recently, symptons were:
1) Increased oil consumption - I thought this was normal as per the posts above (didn't use to use oil, but then started using as detailed above) so ignored the increased oil consumption and just topped up regularly
2) after about 4 / 5 months of incerased oil consumption, the idle stated to be erractic
3) after two more months of 1) and 2) above I noticed loss of power (not dramatic but noticable)
I replaced the original PCV with a VW OE valve but the latest revision and oil consumption has stopped and idle returned to normal and power back up to peak, and owner very happy for a "relatively" cheap and incredibly easy replacement
-
What's the latest revision for the PCV valve?
-
Must say thanks for the replies guys, looks like I can stop the panic :happy2:

Minds on long life due to the mileage I do.
For the last 12,000 miles I 've had to use 1 litre to top mine up.
The car is currently on 21,000 mileages
